This Holiday season seemed to go on and on, and I am hoping it officially ended with Clemson s win over Alabama. Time to get back to work! The Board worked through the Holidays and have planned so many events in 2019 that I hope to see many of you attend. The first board meeting was the second weekend in January at The Westin Domain in Austin. A fantastic venue as we have so many shopping, entertainment, and dining options all within walking distance of the hotel. Friday morning, Glynis Chester and Jill Tate organized a service project benefiting Traffick911. Our first Patron Event was held at the hotel and Derek Ryan was our speaker. I sincerely hope our attendees stayed for the meeting and didn t sneak out for some extra shopping time! We will be at The Westin again in July. Happy New Year, Ladies! 9 Fundraising via Monthly Giving 10 TFRW Merchandise! 11 TFRW Membership 2019 vs On January 16-17, the National Federation of Republican Women Region 5 hosted a Regional Meeting in New Orleans. Special Events There is something about New Years that just makes my heart smile. Perhaps it s the prospect that every day has the potential to be great; maybe it s because each day provides the possibility of impacting others in a positive way; or perhaps it s just my annual chance to hit the reset button. You know, I think we could all use a sanctioned Do Over. I read the news, watch interviews, and am generally appalled at the level of discourse that we have regressed to. From politicians to celebrities, news programs to reality television, the lack of civility is horrifying. My mother used to tell me to, Always speak kindly and with respect because people will remember the method in which you deliver your message long after they forget the content of it. My resolution this Do-Over Day is to make that my motto for I hope that you will join me in renewing your commitment to elevating our dialogue to one civility and respect when sharing our Republican message. As women we are the natural leaders in this area! It is an honor and privilege to serve you, and I would love to have your input, suggestions, and feedback at firstvp@tfrw.org. by First Vice President Glynis Chester firstvp@tfrw.org Resolutions Hey, Ladies, Guess What Time it is?! 4 Legislative Update VP Legislation Julie Faubel Legislative Day 2019 Welcome 2019 and the 86th Texas Legislature! To track what is happening in this year s legislature here are a few websites to follow: With the New Year, comes a new legislative session in Texas. On Tuesday, January 8th, the Texas Senate, led by Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick gaveled in to session with 19 Republicans and 12 Democrats. The House of Representatives elected Representative Dennis Bonnen of Angleton as its new Speaker. He will lead the 83 Republicans and 67 Democrats during the term. The issues of the 140-day regular session are wide-ranging from financial and economic (budget, school finance, property taxes) to requiring the University of Texas and Texas A&M University to play a regular-season football game against one another in November each year. Lawmakers have until Friday, March 8th to file bills to be considered during the regular session. During the 85th Regular Session a total of 10,672 bills were proposed with 4,960 being passed and 51 vetoed. As of this writing, over 900 bills have been drafted with many more to come. Please share this information across all media platforms with your club members. Event and hotel reservations will open soon. Volunteers are needed to help make Legislative Day successful. 5 Political Action by VP Campaign Activities Michele Samuelson The Election is Over- What Now? The partisan November election is behind us, but there are still campaign activities to accomplish! In fact, this is the season that has inspired the idea to call all of this POLITICAL ACTION. You will still be completing and reporting campaign hours. What Counts Now? Testifying at a city council, school board, or commissioners court meeting Testifying in committee at the Texas Legislature Calling or writing to members of Congress Calling or writing to members of the Texas Legislature Calling or writing to your local elected officials Serving on boards or committees for local governments Nonpartisan Races in May And don t forget that we have non-partisan local elections in many jurisdictions in May! Now is the time to recruit candidates for those roles you may be electing school board trustees or other local officials in May, and filing for those offices may already be underway. Ever considered running for office? There is no time like the present! Remember TFRW clubs, club presidents, and campaign activities chairs CANNOT endorse in non-partisan races where more than one known Republican is running. A known Republican is someone who voted in the last GOP primary in Texas so, if they voted GOP in March 2018, they count. You can get that information very easily from your county GOP. New Year s Resolutions 1. Report your club s hours on time. 2. Report using the online form! Bookmark it and make it a habit! 3. Encourage your club members to stay politically active and engaged - follow your school district, city, and county governments, the Texas Legislature, and Congress. Reporting Your Hours The deadline for reporting 2018 Fourth Quarter Campaign Activities Hours was Tuesday, JANUARY 15. That will be hours completed from October-December. The deadline for reporting 2019 First Quarter Campaign Activities Hours is Monday, APRIL 15. That will be hours completed from January-March. Don t slack off on collecting hours! If you would like a program for your club on what campaign activities hours are, why we collect them, etc., please let me know. I will be available on a limited basis through the spring. I hope to be at many of your regional workshops as well and will let you know where I ll be! Reporting Form Reminder: We ve put a link to the reporting form under Programs on the front page of the website. You do not have to log in to access the form! Please use the form for your quarterly reports! Questions, comments, etc., please me at vpcampaignact@tfrw.org 5

8 Fundraising by VP Finance Becky Berger Fundraising and Influencing Community Did you think the only way to raise money was with Social Media or online crowdfunding? Red Cup Party Host a cocktail party and have participants buy red Solo cups at the door, at a wildly inflated price to be donated to your cause. Clothing Swap Everyone brings a bag of clothes they don t wear anymore. Set everything up on retail racks, and let participants shop the swap for one new piece of apparel. Donate all the rest to charity. Community Garage Sale Most people have tons of stuff they are secretly dying to get rid of. Have them donate it to a neighborhood sale with the proceeds going to your charity. Chili Cook-off Charge by the steamy, spicy bowl and ask a few local microbrews to donate the beer to wash it down. Food Truck Rodeo You simply need a parking lot, a permit, and a handful of local food trucks willing to attend. Charge for entrance, and the food trucks can still charge their normal prices inside. Facts to keep in mind: 1. 80% of Americans believe it s essential for people to come together to promote positive change in 5 Americans attended an event to support a particular cause in the last year. 3. Three-quarters of adults ages believe that attending a live event is more impactful than taking action online. Bake Sale This is an oldie but definitely still a goodie. Stand out with a theme that s on point with your fundraising focus, like baked goods made from locally sourced ingredients to benefit local farmers. All-inclusive Pancake Breakfast Make sure you offer options for everyone the gluten free, the vegan, the sugar-free, and the foodie who will eat anything. Celebrity Cooking Class Find a local chef willing to host a class in his kitchen (or rent one) and end the lesson with a lively and intimate group dinner. Film Screening Is there a documentary related to your cause? Host a night at the movies replete with popcorn and candy. We still have the Adams/Bush Portraits with the passing of both First Lady Barbara and President George H. W. Bush, these limited edition prints make great collector items for your political efficinados. They are excellent auction items as well. (continued on page 10) 8

9 Growing Your Club by VP Membership Rhonda Lacy Happy New Year, Ladies! What does 2019 bring us? We re all wondering what will happen with a democrat Congress. We re wondering how much more difficult will it be in our own state legislature with the loss of twelve Republican state reps. Are we even aware of the next nine that the democrats are targeting? Here s what Republicans know for sure-- We must GROW AND EDUCATE our Republican base. TFRW plays a huge part in our Republican mission. WE are the engine that makes this state work. First, I d like to encourage each club to ADD a 5-minute EDUCATION SPOT to each general meeting. For example, your first infomercial might be to share a page about the Texas Court system [easily googled] with your club. Share how that on November 6th that Republicans lost 30/31 Appellate Judge seats across our state. By the way, Clubs I ve only heard from two-thirds of our 150 clubs as to who is the new club President. 100 of you have sent in your contact info to the TFRW office OR contacted me directly. Fifty of you have not shared this info yet. We NEED to hear from every club today. Central Texas RW Installation of 2019 Officers. back. [TEXT ME I ll share the card info with you.] Do NOT be discouraged when everyone joining does not go to work in the club. If TFRW clubs are at least getting info into the minds and hearts of people, you re doing a great job. Only a few ever end up being the worker bees in ANY organization. We don t need to lose sight of how important it is to get information out to as many people as possible. Baytown RW enjoying their first Christmas party. Next, SET MEMBERSHIP GOALS. We need to endeavor to be larger than ever before. A lot of people are moving to our state and we must GROW our organization. We need to convince new friends that Republican values are the reason that they moved to Texas to begin with. DON T MESS with success! DON T MESS WITH TEXAS VALUES! All clubs should have a business card with their info on the front and Republican values on the Then, Membership Chairs it s time for you to hold those CALLING PARTIES. Your Christmas and holiday gatherings are over, and ideally, everyone should already be re-upped in your club. But we know that isn t always the case. SO, get your team together. You should have at least one team member for every 25 members of your club who has NOT rejoined. Large, jumbo, and super jumbo clubs this makes for a big team! Divide up your list and each team member needs to be committed to following up with their 25. Let s get everyone on board NOW! These 2018, 2017, and 2016 members need to be called, texted, and ed. FOLLOW-UP WITH GOING BY HOMES AND COLLECTING MEMBERSHIP DUES, if needed. Ladies, several announcements will NOT get this job done. We have to be willing to put feet to our efforts. (continued on next page) 9

10 (continued from previous page) Burnet County RW Installation of 2019 Officers and Swearing in Ceremony. Talk, talk, talk about joining! Mention membership at every board meeting, every general meeting, every Republican community meeting. Talk about joining the next time you have your hair frosted, get your nails done, stand in long lines at the grocery store. Mention it to your friends in your other organizations and at your church activities. EVERYONE CARRY MEMBERSHIP FORMS, even if your club has online membership renewal. Don t assume that everyone is already a member for And think about giving a RW MEMBERSHIP to your good friends for their BIRTHDAY. We ALL know that TEXAS is in the crosshairs of the democrats. NOW, is the time to set them straight on who governs TEXAS. Now, is the time to build that huge army. NUMBERS, Ladies, DO SPEAK VOLUMES! Don t think that they don t. I am a TEXT away. Your may get lost in the mass that I receive daily, but your text or phone call will have me contacting you very quickly. Let s do this, Ladies! (continued from page 8) Fundraising via Monthly Giving Most organizations saw a dramatic increase in recurring monthly donations last year, and that furor is continuing into Similar to the RPT Grassroots program, your club can benefit from online donations from your website, or publicize monthly contributions with giving envelopes as a practical and manageable way for donors to give more over time. Monthly givers are so important. Their repeated contributions help subsidize the budget that is otherwise sustained by multiple fundraising events. When a donor gives on a monthly basis it not only increases their long-term value, but they stay on file longer allowing you to discover secondary affiliations and promote more giving opportunities. So MAKE IT REAL with recurring giving options on the main donation page and create a campaign featuring individuals who are monthly givers with the positive influence they have on your club s affect for good government. 10
