Kim joins Katrina Nanos who is part-time office reception and Catherine Bardrick part-time accounts/finance. Please introduce yourself to Kim so she can best look after you. With new staff in the office and a new Business Manager it is a good time to start to implement change. So too, we have listened and responded to your feedback during the parent forums with your ideas as to how we can move forward. We are starting to work towards a paperless office and electronic communication to you in the very near future. Please be ready for further information about our changes. A big thank you to the Trivia Committee. A great night was had by all with lots of fun and games and prizes. Well done to the Trivia Night Committee: Jess Solomon, Julie Daniell, Amy Snare, Jo Tan, Melanie Steele and Dimi Emmanoulidis. Thanks for taking on this night and really putting in the time to make it a success. A short message from Year 5 camp. On the way to camp we stopped at San Remo to watch the pelicans feeding and then headed onto Phillip Island Adventure Resort. After unloading the bus the children were allocated their rooms with much squeals of glee and headed off to check them out. All of the rooms are very comfortable and warm with ensuites.
2 We spent the rest of the day with our groups working through the following activities the giant swing, boulder wall, low ropes, camp cooking and frisbee golf. Tonight we played Trivial Pursuit and most children were pleased to head off to their rooms ready for tomorrow s activities. As I am writing this, it is all very quiet and all are asleep. I just hope they stay that way until at least 7 o'clock in the morning but I don't think we will be so lucky. More next week MICHELE BEAL PRINCIPAL Phillip Island CHESS NEWS Chess is off to a great start in Term 3. We have six lunchtime Chess clubs taking place each week, two of which are exclusively for Prep students. The students in our most advanced group had the opportunity to play in at least one tournament last week, with outstanding results. The Chess Kids Whitehorse Girls Only Tournament was held on Monday 13 August at Our Lady of Sion Girls School in Box Hill. Six of our girls played as a team in the tournament, and were the gold medallists a wonderful achievement particularly as all of girls in the Our Lady of Sion team were secondary students. Congratulations to: Emily - Year 6 individual silver medallist with 6/7 wins. Jody - Year 4 individual bronze medallist 6/7 wins Vanessa - Year 4, Chelsea - Year 4, Grace - Year 3, Melissa - Year 4 A very special thank you to Mr Beal for driving our girls to and from the tournament and for coaching them so enthusiastically throughout the day. The Chess Kids Manningham Primary Tournament was held at on Friday 17 August. Our school was represented by two teams of nine students, and once again in an outstanding performance, Doncaster Gardens A was the gold medal team, and Doncaster Gardens B was the bronze medal team. This was a marvellous effort by all of the following students: Doncaster Gardens A: Zhi - Year 4 individual gold medallist with a perfect 7/7 wins Vi King - Year 6 individual silver medallist with 6½/7 wins Junhua - Year 4-4th Allan - Year 6 5th Timothy - Year 6 6th Douglas - Year 4 7th Jody - Year 4 8th, medal for highest rank girl in the tournament Joshua - Year 4 Jayden - Year 4 Doncaster Gardens B: Terrence - Year 3 Nathan - Year 5 Vanessa - Year 4 Angus - Year 6 Grace - Year 3 Jayden - Year 4 James - Year 3 Nathan - Year 4 Kevin - Year 5 The Term 2 Chess Club medallists were: (resulting from the weekly competitions within each group) Page 2

We learned last Thursday that our application was successful! We will be putting the funds toward the considerable costs of sending a team of students to the Chess Kids National Championships at the end of the year, and also the purchase of a set of special DGPS Chess Team polo shirts to be worn by students when they are participating in tournaments. Thanks again to Tony for the opportunity to apply for the grant. Sue McLelland Assistant Principal MATHS CHALLENGE This year, a group of Year 5 and 6 students entered the AMT Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians. 4 Father s Day Workshop Friday 24 August A huge thank you to those ladies who attended the Father's Day Workshop on 10 August. A further workshop will be held this Friday 24 August between am, in the Performing Arts Centre. If you are able to help out with the wrapping of gifts, we would love to see you there! Toddlers welcome and morning tea will be provided. Father s Day Stall Friday 31 August The Parents and Friends Association, will be holding the Annual Father's Day Stall, on Friday 31 August, in the Performing Arts Centre. A variety of beautiful and very affordable gifts will be on display and all students will have the opportunity to purchase something special for their father, grandfather, uncle or that someone special in their lives. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to be able to choose something all by themselves, knowing the great joy they'll be bringing to that special someone. It will no doubt give them greater joy and place an even bigger smile on their faces! All gifts have been purchased utilising the funds from the allocated budget. Please feel free, however, to donate any goods you may be in a position to do so, knowing that all profits from the day will directly benefit the school. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Certainly if you are able to assist by being able to help sell gifts at the stall on the day, this would also be greatly appreciated. A note in this regard has been sent home with each student on 20 August Please complete and return the form to school by this Friday 24 August if you are interested in assisting in any way. SCIENCE QUESTION OF THE WEEK Answer: Butterflies taste with their hind feet. When a butterfly lands on a plant, it drums the leaves of the plant, causing it to release juices. The butterfly can then taste these juices with its feet. This is how female butterflies work out the right plants on which to lay their eggs.
