Introduction JATMA is the association of the PSA tape industry represents Japan. JATMA was established in It consists of 18 PSA tape manufacturers and 69 support companies now. From yearly shipment data (Total JATMA companies) and export/import data of Japan Tariff Association (JTA), Market and recent technological trends of Japan are described below. 2. About JATMA JATMA stands for Japan Adhesive Tape Manufactures Association. JATMA was established on September 3, 1961 by 9 PSA tape producing companies at start. There are regular members and supporting members in JATMA. Regular member has to manufacture PSA tape. The organization consists of general convention, board of directors, secretariat and two committees. Technical committee holds Information Committee and Standard Committee. Technical committee host Annual Technical Seminar, Tape University and so on, and edits PSA Tape Handbook, also establishes or revises Japanese Industrial Standards. 2 3. Tape Market in Japan According to JATMA shipment data, Total JATMA shipment kept increasing since 196 to 1991, and after collapse of bubble economy of Japan, it had kept decreasing to 2. Sales price of PSA tape from JATMA shipment data, it had been declining by the production expanding to It soared temporarily by oil crisis and has become declining again gradually till now. This tendency is that the sales channel is limited to Japan s domestic market and there are not competitive items in the international market. In this decade, total sales has been declining gradually but, there is an impression that it has become upward at last in 2 or 3 years. However, it seems that total sales does not increase widely if export does not expand dramatically as mentioned above. million $ Figure 1. PSA Tape Sales in Japan Million $ Million m million m The Variation by Tape Composition In this decade, total volume of paper, cloth and film tape account for 9% or more and there is hardly movement also in the ratio. On the other hand, total amount of these three kinds of tapes decrease gradually and double-sided tapes have been increasing slightly. Looking at price index, only foam tape rises though rest of all kinds are thoroughly in the falling, price decreasing rate of the double-sided tape is the lowest.

Imported /Exported PSA Tape According to JATMA direct export data, paper, cloth base tapes decrease and film base and double-sided have increased and totally x1.5 in volume compare to 1 years ago. 5 On the other hand, according to import /export data of the Japanese Tariff Association (JTA), import has expanded x2.2 in weight, x1.9 in amount. And export has expanded x1.4 in weight, x2.7 in amount. This export data is not far away from JATMA shipment data. Export/import rate is x1.3 in weight, x4.9 in amount in 25. Big 3 of export items are PET, paper, PVC in weight and PET, other base materials, PVC in amount in 25 Big 3 of import items are PP, PVC, paper in weight and other base materials, PVC, PP in amount in 25. Export increase ratio by base material 25/1996, PE x3.6, PET x3.1, others x2.1 in weight, others x3.8, PET x4.5, PE x4.1 in amount. Export increase ratio by nation 25/1996, Korea x3.2, x1.9, China x1.3, in weight, Korea x6.6, Taiwan x4.3, China x3.4 in amount. Import increase ratio by base material 25/1996, others x4.4, PE x3.9, paper x3.5 in weight, PE x3., othersx2.7, paper x2.6 in amount. In Paper field, it is changeless and Kraft 9% and the Rice paper 1%. 5. Trend of Japanese Market Japanese original product: Kraft adhesive tape, Rice paper adhesive tape, cloth adhesive tape, and cellophane adhesive tape Market Trends about PSA tape: FPD: Liquid crystal, phase, brightness improvement film PSA sheet and protection sheet Semiconductor: Silicon wafer fixation and protection sheet Vehicle: Sealing, VHB, masking, and fixation Medical treatment: Drug delivery system, taping tape Construction: Explosion-proof, UV shield, and waterproof tape Label: IC tag Trend Equipment: Cleanness, thin coating, widely coating, and decrease VOC Adhesives: solvent free, high transparency, and removable Others: The cost performance and the die cut processing technology.

8 6. Conclusions The adhesive tape market in Japan has been declining in this decade. PP tapes increase in the film field tapes. Increase in export is remarkable recently. It is necessary to develop the technically advanced product which other countries can not catch up, as a result, export increases, then Japan can jump up for a while.
