4 Choosing the best software for your classroom environment With your ActivPanel or ActivBoard purchase, you gain access to download the full, Professional versions of four software packages. ActivInspire- This software for Windows, Mac, and Linux machines is Promethean's award-winning software for front-of-the-classroom student engagement. With a multitude of lesson orchestration tools and the robust Flipchart library at the Classflow Marketplace, ActivInspire offers teachers a space to work collaboratively on the ActivBoard or ActivPanel surface. While Classflow Connect is built in to the software, it is limited to Express Polling only; in order to incorporate Classflow features like self-paced Assessments or Classflow Activities, you must use one of the Classflow software options. Classflow Desktop- This software for Windows and Mac computers is designed to enhance the front-of-theclassroom interactivity of ActivInspire by embedding the capability of connecting with student computing devices. This software can work in conjunction with any piece of existing digital curricula because it works as a floating tool deployable at any moment during instruction. Classflow Desktop includes five major features (1) Polling Options, (2) Interactive Whiteboard, (3) PDF, Flipchart, and SMART Notebook Importing, (4) Screen Recording; and (5) Desktop Annotation. Classflow Add-on for PowerPoint- This Windows-only software Add-on is designed to allow you to add your favorite Classflow resources to PowerPoint presentations. Once you install and login to the Classflow Add-on, you will be able to add touch-interactive Simulations, 3D Models, Classflow Activities, and more! Classflow Online- This fully online software suite (works with ANY wifi-enabled device) allows you to create, deliver, and manage interactive display lessons for both front-of-the-classroom collaboration and/or engagement with student computing devices. Teachers can also deliver digital assessments, assign behavioral badges, and embed one of the thousands of free resources on the Classflow Markerplace. Page 1

5 ActivInspire ActivInspire is Promethean's longstanding interactive lesson delivery software. Coupled with your multitouch ActivPanel or ActivBoard, this software will allow you to incorporate and create lessons and activities that compel students to work together in the front of the classroom to create, collaborate, and communicate regardless of the lesson topic and objective. 6 Downloading/ Updating ActivInspire 1. Visit support.prometheanworld.com 2. Click Software Solutions>> ActivInspire 3. Click "Download ActivInspire" and follow the prompts to download the proper version for your computer 4. When the file prompts an install, select "Run" and follow the installation prompts Note- If you're using a MAC, you may need to go to your System Preferences>> Security and Privacy to allow the software to install 5. Open ActivInspire (Look for the Desktop App or Search your computer for Inspire), Select ActivStudio and if prompted, enter your Software Activation Key. If you do not have an Activation Key, contact your Technology Administrator or us at PD@axiedu.com to help you locate your Activation Key. Page 3

7 Getting to know the ActivInspire Look and Feel 1. Toolbar: Use interactive tools to engage students with on-screen content 2. Browser: Modify your Pages with Resources, Actions, and Polling 3. Dashboard: Open recent Flipcharts or access commonly used tools 4. Classflow Connect: Use your Classflow Account to poll students with Flipchart content (Note: ONLY Express Poll works with Classflow Connect) Page 4

9 Using Existing Content in the Resource Browser A. On the left side of the ActivInspire Interface, you should see a Browser Panel (hover your mouse to the left side of the screen to see if it is activated). If it is not there, click View>> Browsers to bring it out onto the screen. B. Click the Second Icon (Resource Browser) C. Click the Shared Resources Icon Page 6

10 Sample Lesson Idea: Rub & Reveal 1. Start with a blank Flipchart page 2. Add text (Text Tool) with blanks or import an existing PDF worksheet with a fill-in-the-blank activity (You can also place an object on the page that you want students to label) 3. With separate text boxes (Text Tool), type the answers in each blank space 4. Using the same color as your background, use the Pen Tool to write over the answers 5. Save (File>> Save) 6. When you're ready to deliver the activity, display it on your ActivPanel or ActivBoard and allow students to write their answers (Pen Tool) and then use the Eraser Tool to reveal the Text answer underneath Page 7

11 Visit the Classflow MarketPlace and Download FREE Flipcharts! 1. Visit Classflow.com and Login or Sign Up 2. Click Marketplace 3. Scroll down and filter your search by File Format>> Flipchart 4. Use additional filters and/or search terms to find content for ActivInspire Page 8

12 5. Select a Flipchart file, and click Add to My Resources if you intend to download it. 6. When you're ready to download and use your Flipchart, click My Resources 7. Click the Marketplace Folder Page 9

13 8. Select your Flipchart, and then click Download If you do not see the Download icon, click the gear icon and then select Download. Once the file is downloaded, open it, and it will launch with ActivInspire Page 10

14 Downloading the ActivDriver If you're working with an ActivPanel or ActivBoard and you experience any software issues, you may need to update your ActivDriver. 1. Visit support.prometheanworld.com 2. Click Software Solutions>> ActivDriver 3. Download the appropriate Driver for your computer 4. When the file prompts an install, select "Run" and follow the installation prompts Note- If you're using a MAC, you may need to go to your System Preferences>> Security and Privacy to allow the software to install Note- You may be prompted to uninstall your previous ActivDriver if it is more than 3 years out of date. 5. Restart your computer Page 11

15 Classflow Desktop Classflow Desktop is Promethean's latest software offering for ActivPanel and ActivBoard teachers. Not only does this software bring the familiar, front-of-the-classroom interaction that ActivInspire offers, it also connects to student computing devices in order to poll, interact, and collaborate over your wifi connection. 16 Prepping your computer for Classflow Desktop 1. If you have an older version of Classflow Desktop, search your computer for Classflow Desktop Uninstaller and use this application to uninstall the older Classflow Desktop components 2. Download and install the latest Promethean ActivDriver A. Visit support.prometheanworld.com B. Click Software Solutions C. Click ActivDriver D. Download the appropriate file for your computer type E. After the ActivDriver downloads, install it F. Restart your computer 3. Double-check the system requirements for Classflow Desktop Page 13

17 Downloading and Installing Classflow Desktop 1. Visit classflow.com or your district's classflow site (yourdistrict.classflow.com). 2. Once you're logged in, look for the "Get Classflow Desktop" button on the Home Page. 3. Download the appropriate version for your PC or MAC. Page 14

18 4. When the download finishes, open the installation file. 5. After the installation completes, you may be prompted to restart your computer. Restart. 6. After your computer restarts, locate and launch the Classflow Desktop program. 7. Activate your Classflow Desktop using one of the following methods: A. Connect to your district Classflow site (ie. yourdistrict.classflow.com). If you do not know your district Classflow URL, contact your school or district IT department to inquire about your Classflow site. B. Plug in to your Promethean ActivPanel or ActivBoard via USB. This also requires that your computer have the ActivDriver installed. If you do not have the ActivDriver, you can download it at activdriver. 8. Click on the Classflow Desktop Wheel and start exploring the tools! Page 15

19 Connecting Students to your Classflow Desktop Lessons 1. TEACHER: Click the Connect Students Icon (if you're not already logged into your Classflow account, you will be prompted to do so). 2. TEACHER: Select what type of class you want to join your Classflow session. A. AdHoc: Anyone with an internet connection can join your session. You will be given a 5-digit code that participants will use to join your session. B. Classes: If you want your Polling and Assessment data to attach to individual students, you will need to launch lessons to your Classes. Each class will have a unique code and will only allow students to join who are already on your roster or who have been given access to join the Class. To setup Classes, visit your Classflow site, click Classes, and begin loading your rosters. NOTE: If you have Google Classroom Classes configured, you do have the ability to copy that class structure over to Classflow. 3. STUDENTS: Visit classflow.com/student (if you have your own Classflow site, the students will visit yourdistrict.classflow.com/student). Once there, the students will choose "Join Class" and enter the Class Code. 4. STUDENTS: Add yourself to the Session roster. A. AdHoc: Students will add their names to the roster (Note: This is not a permanent roster. In order for data to be stored, you must have Classes). B. Classes: Students will select their names from a pre-created Class Roster. Page 16

Remember: In order to illuminate the entire wheel of tools, you will need to (1) Click the Classes icon and select a Class to present to and (2) have at least one student join your session. Page 17

Visit Classflow.com, Login to your account, and click the Download Classflow for PowerPoint Plugin button on the HOME Page Page 21

25 2. Verify your PowerPoint version (64 or 32 bit) If you do not know your PowerPoint version, open PowerPoint, and then click File>> Account>> About 3. Download the appropriate Plug-in file. 4. Open the downloaded file and complete the installation process. Page 22

26 5. Open PowerPoint, Click the Classflow tab, and Login to your Classflow account (modify the Classflow web address if you are using a customized Classflow tenant). Page 23

29 Major Research Findings in Instructional Technology Dollops of Feedback 1 ActivClassroom Success 2 In their 2007 conceptual analysis of feedback and its relation to student acheivement, John Hattie and Helen Timperley outline the conditions that must exist in order to the feedback to be effective enough to positively influence student performance scores. Ultimately, they note that student to teacher feedback as having the strongest impact on performance. This premise, when applied to modern communication tools like G Suite for Education and Classflow, serves as a potential starting point for cohorts seeking to apply tried and true strategies with 21st century instructional technology tools. From , Dr. Robert Marzano, a leading educational researcher, completed a multi-year study to determine the effectiveness of the Promethean ActivClassroom as a tool to help improve student achievement. The nationwide study included nearly 5,000 students, 123 teachers, and 76 schools spread across rural, urban and suburban districts. It is the largest research project of its kind, and is both mathematically sound and statistically robust.
