1 Network licensing for MacVector Introduction Network licensing for MacVector uses the Sassafras KeyServer system. A small software program called KeyServer is installed on a central server - this monitors the number of MacVector licenses in use. Each machine running MacVector has a KeyAccess application installed on it which allows MacVector to communicate with the KeyServer. When you start MacVector, KeyAccess requests a license from the KeyServer, and, as long as one is free, it will check out the license. If all of the purchased MacVector licenses are already in use, you will be placed in a queue until a license becomes available. When you close MacVector, KeyAccess releases the license for use by another user. KeyAccess must be installed on each client machine separately from MacVector. This document explains how to install both the KeyServer and the KeyAccess client. The client information is duplicated in an accompanying client-only document intended for end users. This document is meant for system administrators or whoever will administrate the KeyServer. The instructions below are an overview of the steps needed to set up a KeyServer to provide MacVector licenses across a network. If you are an experienced Sassafras KeyServer administrator, you simply need to copy the MacVector license file sent to you to your existing KeyServer Data Folder. System Administrators Read This If you are upgrading from an earlier version of KeyServer, you MUST contact MacVector, Inc Customer Support (support@macvector.com) to obtain an updated license file. The license files supplied with KeyServer 5.2, K2v6.1 K2v6.2 or K2v7.0 and earlier will not work with K2v7.1 and higher. New licensees will automatically be sent a valid K2v7.2 license via . K2 licenses are backward compatible and will work with earlier versions of KeyServer. There is a separate step that needs to be done on the client side to activate it. Please see the Activating MacVector on clients section for details on this. Be aware that you must match KeyConfigure and KeyServer versions. e.g. KeyConfigure v 6.2 will not work with KeyServer v 7.0. Roaming Network functionality. Some network licenses will also have Roaming functionality. A "roaming network license" works exactly the same as a network license until the user's Mac can no longer connect to the License Server. Then it will switch to being a standard license for 21 days or until the user reconnects to the network. That means the user can work offsite with MacVector. The user must reconnect to the License Server before those 21 days have elapsed.

2 There is no configuration required on the server, however, all clients that require this functionality must have a Roaming Network activation code. If your network license does not have this functionality contact sales@macvector.com in order to add it. Before You Start Choose a machine to be the host for the KeyServer that is likely to be on all of the time. Most administrators do choose Macintosh machines to be the host, but this is not essential. You can use Windows or Linux machines as a server if that is more convenient. In that case, use the K2Server.exe or K2Server.x86.tar installers and read the Sassafras documentation for platform-specific installation and configuration details. All MacVector users will need to type in the name or IP address of the server when first installing so that they can obtain a license. You will need to supply them with either a fixed IP address (e.g ) or a suitable name. If your chosen server has a dynamic IP address, you should definitely use a name as the IP address is likely to change whenever the machine is rebooted. You can change the name of a Macintosh using the System Preferences -> Internet & Network -> Sharing control panel. By default the name is set to something like John Smith s Computer - we recommend you change that to something short and memorable like TheLabServer. Once changed, you can access the machine by appending.local to the name (e.g. TheLabServer.local ). Installing KeyServer Please download the latest copies of the installers from the MacVector website To set up a new Macintosh KeyServer, or to upgrade an existing KeyServer, follow these steps; (1) Log on to the chosen machine, and run K2Server.installer. You will be prompted for an administrative password. During installation, you may see an error indicating that the Evaluation License contained in the installer has EXPIRED and is no longer valid. You should ignore this and click on the Continue button as the MacVector license will activate the KeyServer. If you see any other errors reported, please make a note of them and contact support@macvector.com. (2) Once this is completed then the next step is to put your MacVector network license in place. A folder called Sassafras K2 is placed in the Applications folder. To open this folder click on the Go menu in the Finder, select Applications and open the Sassafras K2 folder. Inside you will find a shortcut called Server. Open this folder, and you will see a KeyServer Data Folder inside. The full path that this shortcut points to is: /Library/KeyServer/KeyServer Data Folder/

3 (3) Copy the MacVector nn User.lic file you have been sent into this folder (where nn is replaced by the number of licenses you have purchased). The network license may have been supplied compressed as a ZIP archive - if this is the case then once it is copied into the KeyServer Data Folder, double click the file to extract it. (4) Next you need to launch the KeyServer. The installer places files in /Library/ StartupItems/ to ensure that the KeyServer starts each time the machine is started, so rebooting will start the server. However, to avoid an unecessary reboot, you can use the ks-startstop utility which is placed in the /Applications/Sassafras K2/ Server/ folder. Again, you may prompted for an administrator password. Installing and Running KeyConfigure KeyConfigure is an administrative utility that lets you monitor the status of the KeyServer and lets you control certain features, such as allowing users to borrow keys for use when not connected to the network. It is typically installed on the machine that is running the KeyServer, but this is not a requirement. You can install it on a local machine so that you can monitor and configure licenses on a remote server. (1) Log on to the chosen machine, and run K2Admin.mpkg. After completion, the installer opens a help page in a web browser with a lot of documentation regarding the KeyConfigure utility and what it can do. (2) Run the KeyConfigure utility from the /Applications/Sassafras K2/Admin/ folder. On first start up. it will prompt for the name or IP address of the machine where you installed the KeyServer, a user name and a password. The default user name is Administrator The default password is Sassafras (3) A number of windows can be opened in KeyConfigure - you can see the full list in the Window menu. In particular, look at the Licenses window, where you can see the number of MacVector licenses available and in-use, and the Users of KeyServer window, where you can see who is using MacVector at any one time. For additional information on KeyServer and KeyAdmin, please view the documentation supplied on the MacVector disk. Note that many advanced functions are only available if you purchase a full KeyServer license. Please contact Sassafras directly at for more information. Troubleshooting If there are any errors please "support@macvector.com" with a full description of the problem together with a screen shot showing the exact error message. If you are getting "permission denied" errors, then it is likely that the permissions on your filesystem have been corrupted. We've found that the best solution to this is to use the free application Onyx to repair them. You can download this from:

4 Please check the Onyx documentation for detailed usage, but in brief once installed, launch the application. It will ask for your password. Click on the Maintenance tab. Then click on the Permissions tab. Then click OK. It will analyze your filesystem and repair any errors it finds. It may suggest that you restart the Mac when you have finished. Once this is done, return to installing the KeyServer. Once you have installed the KeyServer without any problems then install the KeyClient. However, we strongly recommend not to start to install this until you are sure that the KeyServer has been installed correctly. Installing the KeyAccess Client Before starting, you will need to know the IP address or the name of your network KeyServer. You may need to contact your system administrator to obtain this information. An IP address will have a form like (this is an example only). If you use a named server (preferred, if possible), you should ideally type in the Bonjour name of the KeyServer machine e.g. if the machine is named TheLabServer you can access it using TheLabServer.local. You will also need to have administrative privileges on your machine with a valid user account and password. Again, contact your system administrator if this is a problem. If you have a recent MacVector CD, then use the KeyServer installers from there. If you are using an Intel Mac you MUST be using at least KeyServer 6.1 or above. You can also download the latest copies of the installers as a disk image from the MacVector website (1) Double click on the K2Client.mpkg. (2) Follow the on-screen instructions. Enter your user name and password when prompted. You must have administrative privileges on your machine to run this installer. (3) You will be prompted for the KeyServer address. Please type in the correct IP address of the KeyServer machine, or a suitable name (see above). (4) Once once the installation has completed, you will be prompted to restart your machine. (5) Once restarted you should be able to run MacVector with no problems. (6) To check your settings go to the System Preferences (Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen and select System Preferences). At the bottom of the Dialog you will see an Other panel. Click on KeyAccess and check that the correct name or IP address is typed in. Clicking on KeyVerify will check that you have a valid network connection between you and the KeyServer machine.

5 Activating MacVector on Client machines A one-time release activation on each client in addition to the normal KeyServer license server is needed This is due to licensing changes that will make it easier to supply new versions. The activation code is based on a licenseholder name, a serial number and the activation key. You will be ed this by Support following a new purchase, an upgrade or a maintenance renewal. The actual activation procedure is very simple. To activate a license on a client go to the OPTIONS menu in MacVector and click on ACTIVATE LICENSE... Then you simply need to enter the Licenseholder, the serial number and the activation code, exactly as they are written. Once activated the activation information will stay with the machine, and will not need to be reactivated. Even when you upgrade the copy of MacVector on that machine. The file will also get migrated across if you use the Apple Migration Utility to upgrade your OS, or migrate to a new machine. If your installation procedure involves installing the client software remotely, and you 'push' out the software to the clients machines, then you can also activate a single client and send the 'activation file' out to each client along with the software. The license details are stored in the following file. /Library/Application Support/MacVector/MacVector Licenses (note that prior to MacVector 11 this file was called MacVector License Information ). This file needs to be copied in place on each client machine to activate that copy. Permissions must be preserved for the file. Please note that this will only work with KeyServer network licenses. Static licenses must be activated on each individual client.
