1 Instructions for using the 1. Intro Window When you open the ThermoMap MapViewer via you will see this Intro Window partly masking the main map window. Figure 1: ThermoMap MapViewer with Intro-Window, language selection and vsgp Buttons First the preferred language can be selected from the drop-down menu in the Intro Windows upper right corner (default is English). German, French, Romanian, Hungarian, Greek, Dutch and Icelandic are available as alternative languages. In the Intro Window some essential information about the application and the content are given in order to help understand the aim of the application, these include some basic frequently asked questions ( At a glance ). The answers are hidden in collapsed text blocks that are expandable when required. To start exploring the content of the application you need to choose one of the vsgp Buttons on the left side of the Intro Window ( European Outline Map or Test Figure 2: vsgp Buttons for starting the application 1 of 11

2 Areas ). So you are immediately constrained to consider one of the two scopes of the application: The European Outline Map shows a rough first estimation of the area-wide very Shallow Geothermal Potential. More detailed information of the background parameters is only given for the exemplary test sites examples that provide the potential up to 10m depth. Having pressed the desired button, the Intro Window will be closed and a new window ( vsgp Selection Window) appears in the top-left corner of the application. Depending on the chosen scope the European heat conductivity map or an outline map showing all the ThermoMap countries with their Test Areas appears. 3 2. vsgp Selection Window The vsgp Selection Window has two interfaces for the two scopes European Outline Map and Test Areas. They are accessible via vsgp Buttons on the Intro Window or clicking on the vsgp Selection Button on the Toolbar. Step: Select region of interest 2. Step: Select Info tool 3. Step: Click on the map 3 of 11

4 First step: Select region of interest Figure 6: Drop-down menus with all ThermoMap partner countries or Test Areas European Outline Map: Select a country (only ThermoMap partner countries available) from the drop-down menu. Then the map extent zooms to the selected country extent. For other countries use the other zoom-in possibilities as described later on. Test Areas: Select a Test Area from the drop-down menu. Then the map extent zooms to the selected Test Area extent and the respective WMS map layers are loaded from the partner server into the table of contents and the map. To zoom in you can either use the mouse wheel (in the same way as is familiar from modern map applications like Google Maps) or draw a rectangle with the SHIFT key pressed. Figure 9: With the SHIFT key pressed you can draw a rectangle to zoom in Alternatively you can type any location, you would like to navigate to, in the address search field in the top-right corner of the map window and press enter. It is also possible to search by geographic coordinates like , Figure 10: Address search field 5 of 11

6 Second step: Select Info tool Once navigated to your region of interest, select the type of Info tool from the three options. The selected Info tool will be activated by clicking on the map in order to retrieve feature attribute information for the map location clicked. Figure 11: Three a vailable Info tools for exploring a clicked on map point Third step: Click on the map with vsgp Infobox (default) option selected The special vsgp Infobox is tailored to the project needs (using the WMS GetFeatureInfo response). A compilation of information and data from all available map layers is displayed, furthermore the Test Areas Infobox shows a table row arranged like a cross-section for each depth layer. After clicking on a location a window appears with five tabs: the pre-selected Summary tab with a general assessment and possible limitations, the vsgp (European), vsgp 0-10m or more (Test area) tabs that show data tables, the Climate (European) or Climate Chart (Test area) tab with precipitation and temperature data and the Report tab that displays a button for generating a report. In the European Infobox there is also a Calculator tab that displays a button for opening the vsgp Calculator. (For description see the vsgp Calculator Instruction Manual) Furthermore, the title of the vsgp Infobox highlights the coordinates and the address of the clicked point. Hovering the mouse over a blue coloured technical term will generate a tooltip with a short description. Clicking on the Technical Guidelines or Glossary buttons opens a help document. 6 of 11

8 with Report option selected Shows the same vsgp Infobox with pre-selected Report tab. Pressing the Report button generates a Location Information Sheet with map details Figure 13: European vsgp Infobox with Report tab selected and a compilation of all the important background parameters. This HTML-page contains two to five DinA4 pages that are print ready or can be converted to a PDF document. (For description see the Report Instruction Manual) with Expert Info (usual feature information) option selected Clicking on the map with this option produces a window with attribute tables of all visible map layers that are present at this map point. This is an useful tool for getting all the attribute information especially of the map layers with background parameters. The standardized acronyms of the column titles are explained with tooltips and in a list of abbreviations that appears by clicking on the Abbreviations -Button. 9 Lower part of vsgp Selection Window The table of contents and the legend panel are located in the lower part of the vsgp Selection Window. The map layers are grouped in extendable/collapsible folders. You can control their visibility on the map with the checkbox to the left of the map layer name. The Transparency Button (cog symbol) to the right of the map layer name controls the level of transparency (0=fully transparent, 100=fully opaque) with a transparency slider. The Information Button (i symbol) opens an information window (metadata window) about the Web Map Service and the map layer in response to the WMS GetCapabilities request. Here the data sources and processing steps are described by the partner providing the data. This tool helps in understanding the project background. On the right hand side the legend symbology of all visible map layers is displayed. The legends are automatically generated images from the map server (using the WMS GetLegendGraphic response) which the WMS map layers of the respective Test Area or the European Outline Map provide. 9 of 11

11 3. Other functionalities Base maps The background map can be changed with the Select base map button in the upper right corner. With a right-click on this button you can also set the transparency of the actual base map.
