Special Education Technology British Columbia West 75 th Ave Vancouver, B.C., Canada V6P 6G2 Phone: Fax: Clicker 6 (Win/Mac) v.6.6 Customizing a Make a Book Template Introduction In this tutorial we will use the Make a Book Template in Clicker 6 to create a customized template with picture/ media and audio only. This type of template would be useful with students who are preliterate or have emerging literacy skills. The template will provide students a way to demonstrate their knowledge in multiple curricular areas and tasks. This tutorial assumes You have the program loaded and updated to at least Clicker 6.6 You have the program opened. Learning Objectives Completion of this tutorial will give you experience with the following: Creating a customized Make a Book template with pictures and audio only Customizing the master pages of a template Adding pages to a template Saving a Clicker 6 template Case Study Ms. Angeli is teaching a grade 4 class. Since participating in a recent district initiative on differentiation, Ms. Angeli wants to make certain that all students in her class can complete written tasks and feel successful. A student in her class, Ashton, has received assistive technology from SET-BC in the form of a laptop computer and Clicker 6. Ashton has a moderate to profound intellectual disability and is functioning at a pre-literacy level. He relies on picture and auditory/oral support to complete written tasks. The class is working on a research project on the Fur Trade. Students can use the textbook, alternate texts at different reading levels, information from safe internet searches and downloaded curriculumset activities. Students will be expected to demonstrate their knowledge about the fur trade by creating a poster, a narrated slide show presentation or a short story. Ms. Angeli would like Ashton to be able to use Clicker 6 to represent his learning about the fur trade. She is hoping that by adapting the Clicker 6 Make a book template that Ashton will be able to be a successful participant in this project. SET-BC of

Locating the Make a Book Template From the Clicker 6 Quick Start window, locate the Make a book template in the left menu. This is a type of Click and Edit Clicker set that allows a student access to multimedia tools and textboxes without going into edit mode. Hover the cursor over the Make a book option and Select Landscape (or portrait depending on the orientation of your pictures.) 2 Take a minute to become familiar with this template. The first page is the book cover; the subsequent pages are for story content. The user can: Navigate the book using the arrow tools, Record narration using the record/playback tool, Add and delete pages, Change background colour, Add pictures using files, web cam and Clicker Paint. Setting up Preferences for Success To give students access to the computer and flash drive locations: In the top menu, go to Options User Preferences. SET-BC 2 of

2 Click on the Media tab to access the media tools. Locate Media browsing in the bottom right of the media tab window. Click the drop down arrow to select Computer and all libraries. Click OK. Removing the Text Boxes Since our student will be using images and voice to demonstrate their knowledge they do not require the text boxes. In this step we will be removing the text boxes and speaker icon from the cover and pages. Edit Clicker Set This process requires us to use Edit Mode. In the Clicker 6 status bar at the bottom left of the screen, locate Edit Clicker Set. Click on Edit Clicker Set to move to Edit Mode. Note: the tool is now orange to indicate you are in Edit Mode. 2 In Edit Mode, there is a navigation panel on the left. On the right are an editing window and an editing toolbar. In the navigation panel (left) use the top pull down menu and select Masters. SET-BC 3 of

You now have a view of the master grids for this Clicker set. Any change you make to the master will change all of the grids based on the master. First, change the page master. page master 3 In the navigation panel click on the page master. On the editing window, locate the text box. Click on the text box to select it, (you will handles around it to indicate it has been selected.) While selected, press delete or backspace on your keyboard to remove the text box. In the same way, click on the speaker cell and delete it. Click the start_ master, (which is the book cover,) to open it in the editing window. Delete the text boxes and speaker cell in the same way as previously. This is the text box. 4 On the start_ and page masters we will resize the picture/media cells that remain. You are currently working on the start_ master so begin here. (The procedure is the same for both.) In the editing window, click on the media cell. Place your cursor on one of the handles of the cell. Click and drag to resize. Repeat for the page master... Click and drag on a handle to resize. Exit edit mode: Click on the Edit Clicker Set tool again to exit edit mode. SET-BC 4 of

Save the New Template You have designed your new Clicker set to accommodate students who are representing their learning through pictures and narration. Save it as a template so you can reuse it whenever needed: In the menu at the top, go to Clicker Set Save Clicker Set As In the File Name field:, Name your template In the Save as type: pull down menu, select Clicker Set Template (*.clkt) Select a location and click OK. Adding and Deleting Pages The Click and Edit templates come with a special toolbar that gives students the ability to add and delete pages. Click the new page tool to add a page to the activity. Click the delete page tool to delete a page from the activity. Add page. Delete page. Edit and Playback the Story While the students are working on adding pictures and narration, they will want to test out their work. To do that they will need to put the activity into play mode. To do this, close the toolbar: Click Close toolbar to put the activity into play mode. Click on Open toolbar at the bottom right of the Clicker set to return to click and edit mode. SET-BC 5 of
