2 You can see the NY Times version online here: Our goal is to replicate this dashboard in Excel. Get the Data (2:32) The first step is to get the data. You can find the actual dataset used at the S&P Case-Shiller Index site here: Module 7 - Housing Bubble Dashboard - Part 1-2

3 shpidff--p-us---download the "Home Price Index Levels" and "Not Seasonally Adjusted" dataset as shown above. Create the Data Table (2:50) The dataset goes back many years. We will simply create an Excel Table out of the dataset by selecting Table from the Insert tab on the Ribbon. Add a more descriptive header in Row 1 to reference the City Names. 4 Name the table tbldata for use in our named formulas. Make a Chart (4:48) The quickest way to add a chart Press F11 on the keyboard (which creates a new Chartsheet). Change to a line chart. Move the Chart from the Chartsheet to a new Worksheet (we'll call it '1'). Module 7 - Housing Bubble Dashboard - Part 1-4

5 Create the Data Filter (5:36) Using a Table as the chart datasource has the advantage of making the date range to display on the chart almost trivial. We can simply filter the data in the table. Deselecting certain dates will hide those rows in the table and therefore, the Chart is filtered as well, displaying data only from the visible data. Module 7 - Housing Bubble Dashboard - Part 1-5

6 Format Chart: x-axis (6:42) To mimic the year format on the x-axis of the NY Times chart, we do the following: (1) Right click on the x-axis in the chart and select Format Axis... (2) Select Number from the left-hand menu. Custom from the Category list. Enter 'yy in the Format Code. (3) Then, under Axis Options: Major unit, select the Fixed radio button and enter a value of 1 in the textbox. Select Years from the dropdown. Finally, use Font Color menu on the Ribbon to make the text gray. Module 7 - Housing Bubble Dashboard - Part 1-6

7 Format Chart: y-axis Format the y-axis in the same way as the x-axis. Module 7 - Housing Bubble Dashboard - Part 1-7

8 Note that the labels are on the interior of the NY Times chart. We will not duplicate that in this module. But to make the chart more legible (especially since all lines are beginning from the same point), we can simply move the y-axis lables to the right-side of the chart. One change in the custom number format can be made to remove the zero from the y-axis. Select Number from the left-hand menu. Custom from the Category list. Enter 0;; in the Format Code. 9 Remove the border by selecting Border Color from the left-hand menu, and the No line radio button. Remove the chart fill color by selecting Fill from the left-hand menu, and the No fill radio button. For the Plot Area, right click on the plot area and select Format Plot Area... Then, under Fill, select the Solid fill radio button and choose your preferred color, light blue in this case. For the Gridlines, select the Chart Tools - Layout tab from the Ribbon. Our model has major gridlines in both the vertical and horizontal directions. We want to color them white. Select Primary Horizontal Gridlines --> Major Gridlines to select the gridlines in the chart. Right-click on the gridlines. Select Format Gridlines... From the Line Color menu, select the Solid line radio button. Do the same for the vertical gridlines. The chart is starting to take shape! 10 Format Data Series (10:28) We need each line series to be thin and gray. Doing this one-by-one is time-consuming and very tedious. A VBA Macro would be perfect to use here. The SetStyleAllSeriesActiveChart procedure will help us take care of this task in one shot! Much faster than doing it manuallly! Module 7 - Housing Bubble Dashboard - Part 1-10

11 Selecting Specific Line Series (11:47) To make the 20-Market Average line dark gray, we will do that manually. (1) The easy way to select a specific line series is to use the Chart Tools - Layout tab on the Ribbon. (2) And then the Series Selector dropdown to select the appropriate series. Then format the series with a thicker, dark gray line with the Line Style and Line Color properties. Module 7 - Housing Bubble Dashboard - Part 1-11

12 Selecting the Currently Selected Market Series (12:20) We need to add a series that displays the currently selected market. Add a new series to the data set called selected. And we can just add one of the markets' data series arbitrarily by selecting one of the other existing data series. And format manually as in the previous step.
