1 Before You Begin: The Oracle Client software needs to be installed on your PC if you need any of the following: Document Manager Application Xtender Desktop applications. If you use webxtender you will not need this software. If you need Application Xtender Desktop or if you need to use an import wizard you will need to install both the Oracle client and Application Xtender Desktop. Please note that you will need to install both the 64-bit version of the Oracle client, and also the 32-bit version unless your PC has a 32-bit OS (see step #1 below). MS Access link to the Student Reporting Views with MS Access. Please check your version of MS Access before beginning this process; if you have a 64-bit version of MS Access you should install the 64-bit version of the Oracle client. If you have a 32-bit version of MS Access, you will need to first install the 64-bit version of the Oracle client, and then the 32-bit version of the Oracle client (note: the important thing is that your versions of the Oracle client and MS Access need to align). To check your version of MS Access: o Open an MS Access file o File / Account / About Access o You will see product information including whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit SQL Developer If you need to use this software, please check the version. If the software is 64-bit, you will just need to install the 64-bit Oracle client. If it is 32-bit, you will need to install the 64-bit version first, and then the 32-bit version as well. 1. Check your Operating System to see if it is 32-bit or 64-bit: PLEASE NOTE: Application Xtender Desktop is a 32-bit application and is not supported on 64-bit operating systems. However, we are aware that most PCs are now delivered with a 64-bit OS and we do have a work-around that usually works. Following the steps in this document is usually successful. a. Start Menu Control Panel double-click System icon b. Check to see if your System type is 32 bit or 64 bit If your system is Windows 7, look for the system type It will indicate either 32 bit or 64 bit Monday, March 12, 2018 Setup / Upgrade ODBC Page 1

2 2. NOTE: Skip this step and continue with Step #3 if this is the first time you are installing the Oracle client or ODBC on your PC. If you have a previous installation, begin by removing your Oracle 11g data sources. a. Start Control Panel Administrative Tools Data Sources (ODBC) User DSN Tab click each of the Data Source Names that are defined as Oracle in OraClient11g_home then click the Remove button Yes Repeat until all of the Oracle 11g data sources have been removed b. NOTE: If you receive errors and are unable to remove your data sources please refer to Step # Connect to the X: Drive a. Open My Computer and look to see if you have a connection to the X: Drive. If you have it, continue with Step #4. If not, continue with Step 3b b. Tools Menu, Map Network Drive c. Select Drive X: path for folder should read: \\bansvr1\aispc Check the box for Reconnect at logon Finish Monday, March 12, 2018 Setup / Upgrade ODBC Page 2

3 4. Install Oracle 12c client a. Navigate to the appropriate folder on the X: drive: If your Operating System is 32-bit double-click the X: drive to open it and navigate to this folder: X:\Install\oracle12c_client\client32 If your Operating System is 64-bit double-click the X: drive to open it and navigate to this folder: X:\Install\oracle12c_client\client64 b. Right-click the 12c Setup icon and Run as administrator Wait for the program to launch NOTE: You will probably be asked to allow the program to make changes to your system click Yes to continue It may show up as an icon on your Taskbar c. When prompted for type of installation, select Administrator click Next d. Skip software updates click Next e. 4 f. Select Windows Built-In account click Next g. Change the Oracle Base location to: C:\oracle12c_client click Next h. Click Next when it is finished verifying the environment i. Click Install to install the Oracle 12c client. j. Wait for the Installer to go through the installation process Monday, March 12, 2018 Setup / Upgrade ODBC Page 4

5 k. When you get the Windows Firewall Security Alert, click Allow Access to allow the installation program to make necessary modifications l. When you get the message that the installation was successful, click the Close button 5. Restart your PC. 6. If you are installing this software to run ApplicationXtender Desktop and if your PC has a 64-bit Operating System (see Step #1 above) you will need to repeat Steps 4-5 with the Oracle client for a 32-bit Operating System. This is because ApplicationXtender Desktop is a 32-bit application, but also uses some of the 64- bit technology. The software will not work if you do not first install the 64-bit client, and then go back and install the 32-bit client. After completing the 32-bit client install please continue with Step #7. If you are installing this software for a ODBC data connection and you do not use ApplicationXtender Desktop, please continue with Step #7. Monday, March 12, 2018 Setup / Upgrade ODBC Page 5

6 7. Copy files from network drive to local drive: a. Copy the following files from X:\Install\oracle12c_client to C:\oracle12c_client\product\12.1.0\client_1\network\admin SQLNET.ORA TNSNAMES.ORA Copy and Replace b. If you have a 64-bit operating system you will have two client folders. Repeat Step #7a, but this time copy the two files into c:\oracle12c_client\product\12.1.0\client_2\network\admin 8. Set Data Sources NOTE: If you have a 64-bit PC and you installed the 32-bit Oracle client (even if you installed both clients), you will need to refer to skip this step and refer to step #10 to set up your data sources a. Start Control Panel Administrative Tools Data Sources (ODBC) NOTE: If you have a 64 bit OS and use Application Xtender Desktop and/or idatatransfer, please skip to step #10. User DSN Tab add the data source names for each of the data sources you wish to link to Click Add Select Oracle in OraClient12Home1 Finish Enter mdb in these fields Data Source Name Description TNS Service Name Click the Test Connection button and you will be prompted with your login credentials Click OK to return to the User Data Sources Window Monday, March 12, 2018 Setup / Upgrade ODBC Page 6

7 b. If you are a Banner tester and you need to access the test databases you will need to add User Data Sources for red, green blue, gold and other test databases. Repeat the above steps to add these data sources. c. Click OK to close the ODBC Data Source Administrator Close the Control Panel d. NOTE: If you are unable to set up your data sources with this tool, please refer to Step # Troubleshooting a. Make sure that when you copy the.ora files in Step #7 above, you copy them into all of the Oracle home folders (if you have multiple folders). If you have multiple client folders, the folder with the highest number is the latest install. b. If you are not successful when you do a Test Connection (Step #5c or Step #6c above) you may need to double check to make sure that your data sources are in the correct folders. CAUTION: There is no uninstall utility for the Oracle client; the only way to remove it from your system is to edit the System Registry. Please leave the client folders that are on your PC as they are linked to the System Registry. Deleting the folders may cause inconsistencies in your Registry which may result in the tools not working properly. Monday, March 12, 2018 Setup / Upgrade ODBC Page 7

8 10. Additional Data Source troubleshooting (if you received errors in Step #1) Some of you with 64-bit operating systems may have to set up your Data Sources with ODBCAD32.exe. If this is the case you will need to remove them with the same tool. a. Navigate to C:\Windows\SysWOW64 b. Double-click to launch the odbcad32 program c. It will look exactly like Step #1, but you should be able to remove your data sources from here. After removing your data sources please continue with Step #2. d. If you are unable to set up your new data sources in Step #8, we recommend that you navigate back to this folder and use this same tool to set up your new data sources.
