1 Software Announcement April 13, 2004 IBM Red Brick Warehouse Server V6.30 enhances query performance, improves ease of use, and delivers new platform support Overview Red Brick Warehouse Server V6.30, an SQL standard relational database designed for business intelligence applications, delivers support for more SQL functions, improved query execution and optimization, ease-of-use improvements, Table Management Utility (TMU) loader tuning and functionality enhancements, and new platform support. It is available in two configuration options: Workgroup Edition V6.30 is ideal for small to medium size businesses and departmental solutions that require the power of an enterprise database on a system with up to two processors. Enterprise Edition V6.30 provides all of the features of the Workgroup Edition for SMP systems with three or more processors. The following IBM Data Management Red Brick Gold Programs are updated: IBM Data Management Red Brick Gold Analytic Bundle for Enterprise IBM Data Management Red Brick Gold Analytic Bundle for SMB The Gold Program offerings give you the flexibility to install either Red Brick or DB2 products. 2 Description Red Brick Warehouse Server V6.30 includes the following enhancements: Performance enhancements Ease-of-use improvements New platform support Performance enhancements Dynamic segment elimination: Complementing compile-time SmartScan optimizations, the server also supports run-time or dynamic segment elimination. This further optimizes data access for table scans and TARGETjoins that use local indexes. Segment elimination is factored when determining the correct query plan to choose. Memory mapping for queries: To optimize access to dimension tables and their primary-key indexes. These objects are partially or wholly memory-mapped during query execution. TARGETjoin performance improvements: The performance of TARGETjoin queries is optimized, and single-column B-TREE indexes can now participate in TARGETjoin plans. Optimizer directives: The server supports SET commands for controlling the availability of specific STAR indexes for single and multifact joins and for adjusting thresholds that influence the overall choice of STARjoin and TARGETjoin plans. Vista Enhancement: Precomputed views grouped by nullable columns can now be maintained incrementally. Table Management Utility (TMU): Loader enhancements are made in memory usage and tuning. Ease-of-use improvements Alter Table with working segment: You can add or drop table columns into a predefined working segment. This option provides greater reliability and recoverability than other ALTER TABLE modes. Additional SQL OLAP functions: The server supports additional functions for analytic queries: PERCENT_RANK, CUME_DIST, PERCENTILE_CONT, and PERCENTILE_DISC. The server also supports the ROUND scalar function. Expression support: You can define arithmetic expressions and conditional CASE expressions for input columns inside the TMU control file. Shrink System catalog: To improve performance, you can use the rb_syscompact utility to reduce the size of the database system catalog. Allow 3 GB address space on the Microsoft Windows platform: To improve scalability and performance, Red Brick executables can use up to 3 GB of virtual address space on the Windows platform. Multicharacter delimiter support: To extend delimiter support in the Table Management Utility (loader) and Export. Nested XML namespace support: To extend definition of XML data for loading. Support for.net applications through the ODBC.NET data provider: Applications can use Microsoft s ODBC.NET provider and the.net Framework 1.1 with the Red Brick ODBC driver to access data from Red Brick Data Warehouse. Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act Red Brick Warehouse V6.3 is capable as of April 16, 2004, when used in accordance with IBM s associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. Product positioning Red Brick Warehouse Server is best positioned in: Star schema data marts where referential integrity is enforced and which are experiencing poor data loading performance, poor detail-level query performance, or expensive hardware upgrades to achieve acceptable performance. Complementing an e-business environment with an easy to install, easy to use, easy to administer, and very low cost of ownership Red Brick data mart and data warehouse. 8 IBM Data Management Gold Program Red Brick Analytic Bundles The charge unit is per processor under the dual license for either DB2 or Informix. Note that each CPU available to the installed software must have a separate entitlement that can be either DB2 or Informix. When you purchase a single license (right to copy), you are authorized to install either Red Brick or DB2, but not both. If you purchase 10 licenses of the Red Brick Gold Analytic Bundle, you may install 10 copies of Red Brick or 10 copies of DB2, or five copies each of Red Brick and DB2. You can also order, if needed, either the DB2 products media package and documentation or the Red Brick media package. The appropriate media package will be shipped directly to you with the operating system of your choice.
