1 How to Borrow Library Books on the Kindle Touch What you will need 1. WIFI connection 2. Westlake Porter Public Library card number (located on the back of your library card, starts with PPPL, a total of 14 characters; card should be in good standing) 3. Amazon account and Amazon account password 4. Internet connection Books Published by Penguin Kindle Books published by Penguin will not be delivered wirelessly to your device. They can only be downloaded by using your USB cord. Please refer to the last page of this step-by-step guide for instructions.

2 WIFI How to turn on WI-FI on your Kindle (your Kindle Books can only be delivered to your Kindle with a WIFI connection, NOT a 3G connection) 1. Tap your Home Button 2. Tap the top of the screen 3. The menu and tool bar will appear at the top of the screen 4. Tap Menu located on the upper right corner of the screen 5. A box of display options will appear 6. Tap Settings 7. Tap Wifi Networks 8. A list of Wifi networks will appear 9. Choose your home WIFI or if in a public place, choose the location s WIFI. Places that offer free WIFI (like the library) will not require a password. If a location has more than one WIFI node, choose the one with the most bars (more bars mean a stronger signal) 10. Tap the Home Button to go HOME Registration When you buy your Kindle, Amazon will ask you for an and a password to setup an Amazon account, if you don t already have one. Your Kindle will be registered to that Amazon account. The book that you borrow from the library will be sent to whatever device/s is registered to that specific Amazon account. Getting to Our Digital Media Website You can access the Internet from your Kindle, however using your computer s browser is less cumbersome than using your Kindle s browser to get to the Internet: 1. From your computer, go to 2. On the right hand side, under Digital Collections, click on Downloadables 3. Click on the Overdrive logo

3 Browsing/Searching for Kindle Books 1. After clicking on the Overdrive logo, you will be sent to our Overdrive site (overdrive.westlakelibrary.org) 2. SEARCHING: If you know the title of the book you are looking for: -- type the title of the book in the box under Quick Search, located on the right hand side of the page -- Then click on the magnifying-glass icon or press return on your keyboard. -- a list of ebooks and audiobooks will be shown. Ebooks are designated by a book icon in the upper right corner of the cover. Audiobooks are designated by an earphones icon. The icons are black for books currently available for checkout. The icons are pale gray if all copies of the book are currently in use. -- Click on a book cover for more information about that title. Make sure that Kindle Book appears on the right side of the page under Available Formats. -- if you do not see the book on the list, we do not own that book currently 3. BROWSING: Many browsing categories can be found in the blue band at the top of the screen. If you don t see this blue menu of browsing categories, click on the Menu icon at the top of the page. After selecting one of these categories, you can easily sort the results and further focus the search by using the options on the left side of the screen. For example: Select Kindle Book under Format to narrow the list to only titles that are available for Kindle. Use the Sort By box to resort the list by title, author, release date, etc. Change the Show Me box from My library s collection to Only titles with copies available to narrow the list to currently available titles. 4. WISH LIST: Any time during the browsing process, you can add Kindle Books to your Wish List by clicking on the little gray ribbon at the bottom of a book cover. This list will keep track of books you may want to borrow in the future. It will NOT put items on hold or check them out.

4 Placing Holds 1. If the book you d like to borrow is currently checked out on our Digital Media site (overdrive.westlakelibrary.org), you will see the Place a Hold button, instead of Borrow 2. Tap on the Place a Hold 3. Type in your library card number (if you haven t already) and tap Login 4. You will be prompted to type in your address twice 5. Tap Place a Hold 6. You will receive an when the selected title becomes available for checkout 7. You will have 3 days to check out the selected title, once you receive the Checking Out 1. Once you ve found an available book, click on Borrow. 2. Type in your library card number (starts with pppl and is 14 characters long, no spaces, no need to capitalize) and click on "Sign In." The title will now be added to your Bookshelf. 3. You may see two options. One is to download the file. You may also see an option to read the title in a Web browser. The instructions below are for the option to download the title. 4. To Download for Kindle, click on the arrow in the blue Download box next to the cover and click in the box next to Kindle Book. Then click on Confirm & Download. This will send you over to the Amazon website. 5. Click on "Get for Kindle." This will send you over to the Amazon website 6. The site will prompt you to sign in (you should already have an Amazon account when you setup your Kindle) 7. The site will ask you to choose where to deliver your Kindle book. Choose the name of your Kindle device (if you have other devices like an ipad, iphone or an Android device, you have the option of sending your Kindle Book there). After you click Continue, your Kindle Book will be wirelessly delivered to your device. 8. For those who may not have a Wifi connection or for those borrowing Kindle books published by Penguin, you would have to download your ebook via usb -- attach your Kindle to your computer at this point in the process -- click on download now and follow the instructions detailed on the last page of this guide

5 How to Sync 1. If your Kindle book doesn t automatically appear on your device, tap your Home Button 2. Tap the top of the screen 3. A menu and tool bar will appear at the top of the screen 4. Tap Menu located on the upper right corner of the screen 5. Tap Settings 6. Tap Sync & Check for Items 7. Tap your Home Button again 8. Your Kindle book should appear on your Home Page How to return/delete ebooks from your Kindle Touch 1. Go to from the web browser on your computer 2. Sign in with your and password 3. On the upper left corner of the page, click on Shop All Departments (located under the word amazon.com) 4. Under the Kindle heading, click on Manage your Kindle 5. A list of all the books you own and the library books you've borrowed will appear 6. Library books will be clearly labeled as "Digital library" 7. To the right of the title of the library book, you will see a button labeled "Actions" 8. When you hover over "Actions," a drop down menu will appear 9. Click on "Return this book" to return a book early (this removes the book from your library account only. A copy of the book remains in your Kindle but it cannot be opened) 10. Hover over Actions again and click on Delete from library (this permanently deletes the book from your Kindle archive. The Kindle archive contains all of the books you ve bought as well as covers of those you ve borrowed. Click on this option if you DON T WANT Amazon to keep track of what you ve borrowed from the library) 11. From your home page on your Kindle, you will see the cover of the Kindle book you borrowed with a message saying Loan ended

6 How to remove the loan ended notice that shows up on your Kindle Book after you return it: 1. Place your finger on the book cover and hold it there 2. Shortly after, a menu will appear 3. Tap delete Currently, there is NO RENEW OPTION on Overdrive. In order to borrow your Kindle Book again, you will have to go through the BORROWING PROCESS as outlined above. How to access your Westlake Porter Digital Media Account: 1. From your computer, go to overdrive.westlakelibrary.org 2. At the top of the screen, click on Account 3. Type in your library card number and log in 4. Your Bookshelf of OverDrive titles currently checked out to you will be displayed. 5. On the right, click on Holds to download books you ve placed on hold 6. Click on Lists to display books you ve added to your wish list. You can then checkout any of these books from this list when you re ready. 7. Click on Settings to change the default loan period for ebooks or audiobooks.

7 Downloading your Kindle Book via your USB cord (for patrons without WIFI or for downloading Penguin Books) 1. Plug your Kindle to your computer via your USB cord. Your Kindle screen should say USB Drive Mode when your computer recognizes your device 2. Go to the library s digital media site (overdrive.westlakelibrary.org) and check out your Kindle book or your Penguin Book. Follow the prompts until you get to the Get for Kindle page (this takes you over to the Amazon site). Click on Get for Kindle 3. Click on Get Library Book 4. Sign in with your Amazon account and password 5. On the right hand side of the page you will see Get Library Book and below it Transfer via Computer. If you mistakenly borrowed this book, click on Return this book located in the middle of the page below the expiration date. 6. Click on Get Library Book 7. Choose the name of your Kindle device then click Continue 8. Wait for a box to pop up 9. Choose the Save File option, then click OK 10. A new box will open 11. Make sure that it says Desktop at the top of this box (this means the Kindle file will be saved on the desktop; if you do not see this option, that s OK) 12. Click Save. Your Kindle book will begin to download 13. Go to your desktop 14. Click the round Windows Button (located at the lower left corner of the computer screen) 15. Click on Computer 16. Your Kindle device should be listed on the right hand panel along with your hard drive and other disk drives 17. Double click on the Kindle drive/icon. Your Documents Folder will be listed here 18. Leave this box open for now and go to your desktop 19. Find the Kindle Book file listed under the title (with extension.azw) and drag it over to the Documents folder of the Kindle Drive/Icon. If you cannot find your book, -- click on the Windows Button -- In the search box, type *.azw -- Your book should appear on the list -- Drag your book to the Documents folder of the Kindle Drive/Icon 20. The Kindle Book is now in your Kindle Device 21. On the left hand panel, under Folders, right click on the icon for your Kindle Device 22. A drop down menu will appear 23. Choose Safely Remove or Eject to safely remove your device 24. Unplug your Kindle from your computer 25. Happy Reading
