2 Before You Begin In order to manage and transfer ebooks to your ereader, you will first need to download Adobe Digital Editions. If you do not already have Adobe Digital Editions on your computer, visit This page provides information about Adobe Digital Editions and compatible devices. You can read the page if you have any questions about the software. When you are ready to download, click Download Now under Next Steps on the upper-right-hand side of the page. Tap Livingston Parish Library on the results screen. You will be taken to the Library Details page. On this page, tap the library collection name under Library Systems. Once you access the Livingston Parish Library collection, you can browse and search for titles, and use the same checkout process outlined in this pamphlet. To open a freshly downloaded ebook, tap the Status Bar, and then tap the title. Wirelessly Returning an Item Click here to download Adobe Digital Editions Under Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 Installers, click Macintosh if you have a Macintosh computer and Windows if you have a Windows computer. You should get a pop-up box asking if you want to run or save the file. Click Run. You will get another pop-up box. Check the box to accept the terms of agreement and click Next. If you have a Sony Reader Wi-Fi, you can wirelessly return items. You must be connected to a Wi-Fi network to wirelessly return items. This option is unavailable for all Axis 360 items. Proceed only if you have checked out items from the OverDrive ecollection. Tap Books from the Home Page. Tap and hold down the title you wish to remove from your ereader. Under Options, tap Return Book. You will see a confirmation pop-up asking if you are sure you want to return. Tap Yes.

3 Right click on the item s cover, click Return Borrowed Item, and then click Return in the pop-up box. Select options (it is recommended that you leave all boxes checked) and click Next. Click Install. When Adobe Digital Editions is finished downloading, the pop-up will say Completed. Click Close. The Adobe Digital Editions screen will pop up. This is where you will view and manage ebooks once you check them out. In the future, you can access this screen from an icon that automatically installs on your desktop. Wirelessly Transferring an Item If you have a Sony Reader Wi-Fi, you can wirelessly download items to your ereader. You must be connected to a Wi-Fi network to wirelessly checkout all items. This option is unavailable for all Axis 360 items. Proceed only if you have checked out items from the OverDrive ecollection. From your Sony Reader Wi-Fi home screen, tap the > button in the lower-right-hand corner. Tap Public Library, then Discover More Here. Search for the Livingston Parish Library in the provided box. You can do this using the library name or the zip code If you have never used your computer to download ebooks before, you should be prompted to authorize your computer. If you are not automatically prompted to authorize your computer, click Help on the top menu and then click Authorize Computer in Adobe Digital Editions. If you have an Adobe ID from using other Adobe products, enter your username and password. Otherwise, click Create an Adobe ID. Follow the steps on the Adobe website at to create an ID.

4 When you are finished, return to Adobe Digital Editions and enter your ID and password in the Authorize Computer pop- up box. Once you transfer an item to your ereader, it will be automatically authorized to use with Adobe Digital Editions. You can authorize up to six devices with your Adobe ID. Finding ebooks To get started, go to You will need your library card number to check out ebooks. Type in the title, author, or a subject into the Search Our Catalog box in the right top corner of the Livingston Parish Library homepage. Click Search. On the results screen, you will see all Livingston Parish Library resources that match your search. Narrow these results to our ebook collection by clicking ebook on the left-hand side. The catalog will then display all ebooks matching your search. Manually Returning an Item If you used Adobe Digital Editions to transfer an item to your ereader, you can also use Adobe Digital Editions to return the item, if you want to take it off your account before your checkout period is over. Open Adobe Digital Editions. If you are in the Reading view of Adobe Digital Editions (with a book open), click the Library button with back arrow in the upper left-hand corner. Connect your device to your computer using its USB cable. Click the name of your device under Devices. Right click the item you want to return and click Return Borrowed Item. Click Return in the pop-up box to verify that you want to return the item. To completely remove the item from Adobe Digital Editions, click All Items on the menu on the left.

5 Open Adobe Digital Editions on your computer. To do this, double click the icon on your desktop that looks like the one on the right. You should be viewing your Adobe Digital Editions library. If you are in the Reading view of Adobe Digital Editions (with a book open), click the Library button with the back arrow in the upper-left-hand corner. Click All Items on the left-hand-side of Adobe Digital Editions to see all items in your library. Connect your ereader to your computer. You can do this with the USB cable that came with your ereader. Your ereader will show up as an icon on the left hand side of Adobe Digital Editions under Devices. Click the cover of the item you would like to add to your ereader. The cover should be in the main of Adobe Digital Editions to the right. Drag the cover over your ereader icon. The transfer should start immediately. The banner across the book jacket shows how many days are left in the lending period. Books that are available will have a Download button that you can click to begin the download process. Unavailable books will say Not Available. Click More Options to place the item on hold. Once you have found an item you wish to download, click the Download button. You will be redirected to one of our ebook collections: OverDrive or Axis 360. Downloading ebooks From OverDrive If the title is available through our OverDrive collection, you will be taken to OverDrive after you click Download. You will see some information about the book and the formats in which it is available. You can check out an ebook for 7 days by default through OverDrive.

6 If you would like to check the book out for longer than 7 days, click Change under the large borrow button. Now you will need to download the title. Click the Download link. Select the amount of days you would like to checkout the book and click Done. You will see a pop up asking how to handle the file. Select Open With and choose Adobe Digital Editions from the drop-down box if it is not already selected, then click OK. Your book will open in Adobe Digital Editions. Manually Transferring an Item When you are ready to download the book, click Borrow. These instructions are for Adobe Digital Editions 2.0. If you have an older version of Adobe Digital Editions, please download the newest version using the instructions outlined in the Before You Begin section of this pamphlet. If you have a Nook Color or a Nook Tablet, you can also download ebooks using apps. Read our App Patron Guide for more information. If you have a Kobo Vox or a Sony Tablet, you can only download ebooks using apps. Read our App Patron Guide for details.

7 You will see a confirmation that the item was added. Click OK. Click on My Checkout List in the upper-right-hand of your screen. Under the title, there will be a blue bar, slide the circle in the bar to set your checkout time between 7 and 21 days, then click Confirm Checkout. Enter your library card number and click Sign In. Once you are signed in, you will be taken to your Bookshelf. From here, you can choose to download the item in order to read it on an ereader or to read it in your browser. Enter your library card number and your pin (the last four digits of your library card number) in the pop up box and click Login. If you select Read, the book will open in your browser on your computer and you can instantly begin reading it. If you select Download, you will be given the option to select your format. Select EPUB ebook. Once you have selected the format, click Confirm & Download. You will see a pop up stating that your checkout was successful. Click OK.

8 You will see a pop up asking how to handle the file. Select Open With and choose Adobe Digital Editions from the drop-down box if it is not already selected, then click OK. Downloading ebooks From Axis 360 If the title is available in our Axis 360 collection, you will be taken to Axis 360 after you click Download. You will see information about the book and the formats in which it is available. When you are ready to download the book, click the circle next to epub. Your book will open in Adobe Digital Editions. The default checkout time on Axis 360 is 21 days. If you do not wish to change the checkout period, click Checkout Now. If you would like to check the book out for fewer than 21 days, click Add to Checkout List.
