4 Why 3D GIS? Several efforts to bring 3D GIS in Cambridge Visualization for planning a dynamic city Uses which spans many departments and growing initiatives 3D more broadly used by mapping sites and GIS Citywide model not going to detailed level of a building information model (BIM)

5 Beginnings of 3D GIS in Cambridge -Discussion of a Citywide model in 2012 with Harvard University -Models were becoming affordable to build -GIS had better software and workflow to work with 3D -3D efforts in Boston, Harvard, & MIT could lead to fruitful collaboration in region

6 Components of the 3D Program -Creating the model and maintaining the data -Designing a workflow for updating the model -A workflow for staff use -Creating a Web site with interactive streaming -Getting the data out to our open data community

7 Building the 3D Model - CyberCity 3D was working with Boston and Harvard - Buildings were created using photogrammetrical techniques Infotech flyover scans used -Pilot area created in Harvard & MIT built building models of campuses - Full citywide model completed in Pictometry flyover scans used for update - Latest update from 2016 satellite imagery - Delivered in ESRI Multipatch & COLLADA formats

8 Syncing 2D & 3D Buildings - Want buildings to share building ID - Building ID is in 2D building layer, an attribute in address points, and master address database - Citywide review of 18,000 buildings -2D Buildings with consistent architecture merged, and addres point and address database record updated -3D buildings flagged for splits, merges, or issue points -Desired result: 1:1 match of 2D and 3D buildings - Not exact geometry on footprints - Model builder used to ingest ID from 2D to 3D

9 Designing a Workflow for Planning -Work with staff to update model and use for visualization -Work with Community Development Dept. (CDD) for 3D digital submission requirement -Create specifications for building architects and designers -Create data download page for public

17 Creating a 3D Web Page -3D page within the Cambridge GIS Web page -Focuses on interactive Web streaming, data downloads, and info -Will interact with 2D interactive maps and my Cambridge master address page

20 Making the 3D Model Useful in GIS -3D GIS has been hard. New tools and simplification may make this easier -Key attribute is Building ID -Link to GIS address point layer (building ID hard coded) -Link to master address database (building ID hard coded) -Tabular link to Assessing CAMA records, building energy use, other data from joined tables -Goal is to have users access 3D like 2D on Web and in Desktop

22 Streaming the Data on the Web -Still in the early stage -(but moving quickly!) -ESRI solution of ArcGIS Online (AGOL) via Portal -Links to mycambridge database and launch from within current online tools

26 Next Steps for the Model -Finish 2D and 3D sync -Almost done! -Model of bridges over Charles River -Link tabular data to building ID via GIS address points and master address database -Updates from 2017 and 2018 flyovers -Roll out 3D to every City department -Show our municipal neighbors the value of 3D so they can justify creating a model -Build a 3D community!

27 Future Ideas for 3D -A more complex data schema such as CityGML -Break down some buildings by floors -Expand past CDD into Public Safety, Traffic Dept, & Public Works -Regional projects with Boston
