Agenda Who am I? What you will learn Solid Edge Capabilities Demonstrations Benefits of this topic How to Learn More Wednesday, 3:00-4:00 PM Page 2
Who am I? Ronnie Conerly Product Manager for Simulation and Equipment Layout Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering Texas A&M University 26 years experience in CAD/CAE industry Worked at NASA s Marshall Space Flight Center as CAD/CAE consultant Managed engineering support contracts at MSFC, JSC, and KSC General Manager for Knight & Hale Game Calls and Carry-Lite Decoys Page 3
What you will learn Need something routed? This presentation introduces how to route: Pipes Tubes Frames Wire Harnesses Solid Edge s assembly application contains multiple environments allowing you to design custom routing features to include in your designs. See how easy it is to route piping segments, tubes, frames, and electrical wiring harnesses. Available with Solid Edge Premium or separate licenses Presentation is geared towards those users whose products include these type routes. Anyone interested in these topics should attend the session. Page 4
General Page 5
Assembly Routing Solid Edge Assembly has several routing environments with functionality for specific routing applications. These environments include: XpresRoute Piping Tubing Frames Wire Harness All environments have common sketch and curve creations commands to drive the feature creation and editing Page 6
Assembly Routing Plant Layout Frames Tubes Piping Harness Page 7
New Peer Edge Locate New in ST7 referencing parts above the subassembly being edited or to parts in other subassemblies. Piping Subassemblies Tubing Subassemblies Wire Harness Subassemblies Frame Subassemblies Hold Shift Key when referencing higher level geometry Creates interpart links/references to geometry Page 8
New 3D Sketching Available in ALL 3d Modeling environments Can be used in all routing applications UI/Functionality similar to 2d sketching but 3D Can use Peer Edge locate to reference geometry outside the edited subassy Page 9
Existing Path Creation Commands All routing environments have 3d Path creation commands PathXpres Line Arc Curve Keypoint Curve Split Element 3D Relationships 3D Dimensioning All commands will eventually be replaced by 3D sketching Page 10
Frames Page 11
Frames Frames can be created based on: 2d sketch geometry New 3D Sketch Geometry Part Body/Edges (introduced in ST6) Frames are based on part file cross sections Frames are embedded part files in the assembly Page 12
Frames Frame Origin Command in Part Sketch/Profile Added in ST6 Defines default origin, orientation Used in creating frame features Page 13
Frames Using Part/Body Edges New in ST6, you can now reference as input body edges as input to drive frames Use Part as a reference part (occurrence properties) Don t display in Drawing Views Exclude from BOM Exclude from Physical Properties Exclude from Check Interference Associative to the part geometry Editing reference part updates the frame feature Page 14
Frame Enhancements in ST7 Preferred plane/axis orientation Bisector/Radial orientation Corner treatment for legacy frames Ignore edges that already have frames Improve frame trimming Allow multiple end condition edits Enhanced end condition edits Reset to default end condition Zoom To cross section Hide reference planes during edit cross section Added an Apply to Options dialog Page 15
Preferred Plane/Axis Orientation Options New frame options provide you a choice to select a preferred plane for mitered corner treatment or a preferred axis for butt corner treatment. Orientation will default to the Base coordinate system, but any coordinate system can be selected. Next, you can select which plane of the coordinate system to use as the preferred orientation (xy, yz, xz). A preview is available to help you visualize the selected orientation Page 16
Preferred Plane/Axis Orientation Options Notice the plane orientations below Frame created in the XZ orientation Frame created in the XY orientation The plane orientation can only be during creation mode This option is not available in the edit mode mainly because subsequent features dependent on the original orientation may fail It can only be changed by deleting the frame and recreating it Page 17
Preferred Plane/Axis Orientation Options The Miter corner treatment gives you the option to pick the preferred plane Preferred XY Plane Preferred YZ Plane Preferred XZ Plane Page 18
Preferred Plane/Axis Orientation Options The Butt corner treatment gives you the option to pick the preferred axis Preferred X Axis Preferred Y Axis Preferred Z Axis Page 19
Preferred Plane/Axis Orientation Options In either case if there are no entities (edges, faces, etc.) that are parallel to the preferred plane or axis, then the entities most parallel to the preferred plane or axis will be used (XY plane used in this example). These preferred miter plane/preferred butt axis options are also available in the Edit End Conditions ribbon bar. Page 20
Bisector/Radial Orientation We now offer a bisector/radial orientation option to allow the frame to orient to a bisector plane or to a plane passing through the center Just like the preferred plane orientation, this option cannot be changed during edit workflow You can change frame member orientation in the Edit Cross Section step Page 21
Corner Treatment for Legacy Frames During edit workflow of a legacy frame, the coordinate system and preferred plane combo boxes are disabled Notice the Legacy options are placed on the dialog, but you have a choice to switch to the new corner treatment options The legacy options are also present on the ribbon bar during an Edit End Condition step Page 22
Ignore Edges That Already Have Frames If a frame member is already created on an entity, then when that same entity is selected again during frame creation, that entity is ignored These edges that already have a frame are ignored! Page 23
Improve Frame Trimming ST7 has improved frame trimming so that it trims to a plane This will happen automatically when the Coping on non-mitered joints option is turned OFF Page 24
Allow Multiple End Condition Edits ST7 allows you to select multiple ends for Extend/Trim operation in the Edit End Conditions step In ST6 only one end could be extended at a time. In this case you would have to execute the command 6 times to trim all 6 legs to the surface In the Extend/Trim operation, the Select Frame Component step will have Accept and Deselect buttons so that multiple frame components can be selected Page 25
Enhanced End Condition Edits You now can quickly edit just one end condition rather than both the end conditions of a frame member. Locate the frame member Select the frame member Select the sphere Puts you directly in the right place to make the edit. ST6 took multiple clicks to get to this point Page 26
Reset to Default Conditions When an end condition is modified in the Edit End Conditions step, we now provide a way to reset the end condition back to the default condition This option is available in the Edit End Conditions step and will clear all the end condition overrides at the selected ends This option is available in the Options dialog and will clear all the end condition overrides in the frame Page 27
Edit Cross Section Zoom To In the Edit Cross Sections step, we have added an option to Zoom To the selected cross sections In this example if you select Zoom To, notice it will fit around all the highlighted cross sections! Page 28
Hide Reference Planes In the Edit Cross Sections step, we no longer display the plane of the cross sections and less clutter on the screen ST6 ST7 Better feedback to help you understand the orientation of the cross section and origin point Page 29
Added an Apply to options dialog Added an Apply button on the Options dialog so that the changes can be applied without dismissing the dialog Also made the Options dialog modeless so that the user can modify the view without having to dismiss the dialog Page 30
Tubing Page 31
Tubes Tubes are single continuous components driven by 3D paths Part files created on disc for each tube Inputs (SE Options controls default inputs or user can override defaults) Part Template File Location Filename Material Bend Radius Outer Diameter Minimum Flat Length Wall Thickness (or Solid) Bend Tables/Reports for each tube New in ST7, Saved Settings New in ST7, Inter-Part Manager Page 32
Tube End Treatment Options End Treatment Options None Expand Flange Reduce Closed Page 33
Tubes UI Page 34
Fixed Length Flexible Hose New in ST7, 3d curves can have fixed length values Length Value and Edit directional control Page 35
Piping Page 36
