2 Summary TKKW Network Design Group is pleased to respond to your Request for Proposal and to submit our design for your company s new special education office building. We recognize that your immediate need is mobility. We feel that our company has met your design criteria as per your RFP and have met your criteria to adequately support LAN and WAN connectivity both in your office and outside the surrounding metropolitan area. Once the install is complete, we ll install all application software to meet your needs. As you will see, our proposal will also meet your budgetary needs. It is TKKW Network Design Group s priority to satisfy your financial concerns and still provide you with a quality product and service. Design Our design proposal utilizes a structured cabling network. This network will use CAT 5e unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cabling with RJ-45 terminator connectors and will contain double dry wall brackets at each of the wall connection outlets. The cabling will run in the ceilings away from fluorescents and to avoid other EMI interference to the network. The network communications equipment demarcation point will be housed in the records room of the your office building and will consist of a Cisco Integrated Services Router, Dell Power 24 port Ethernet Switch, Aruba wireless access point, Dell Power Edge Server with Win SBS and backup software, and a Cisco ASA 5510 Series Adapter Security Appliance. We will run enough cabling to connect all personal computers which will include power surge protection connected to the network. The wireless access point will be ceiling mounted in the conference room which will adequately reach al access points to satisfy the wireless laptops/docking stations and printers. Laptops will utilize connection cards when outside of the building. Mobility Laptops will have wireless access from all points in the building as well as outside the office and within the metropolitan area. In addition to the laptop workstations, wireless availability for printers will also be in use.

3 Security Protecting your staff s vital information is of the utmost concern for us. This project was designed to insure that the network security will be within an acceptable and appropriate level with your building. Each computer will be equipped with a personal firewall, provided by the computer s software package, which is designed to provide advanced security while online. An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is provided for protection against hardware damage, data loss, and unexpected power interruption. Each laptop is also equipped with an appropriate level of network security.

10 Test hardware and cable connections Troubleshoot if necessary Week 7 Install hardware Test hardware Troubleshoot if necessary Set timing for automated backup software

11 Proposed Backup Strategy and Facilities Who is responsible for the backup process? The office manager will be responsible for the backup process since he/she also acts as the network administrator. How will the backups be accomplished? An automated internal tape drive and backup software will be utilized. What information is to be backed up? Everyone who uses the laptops or desktops will be required to backup files onto the backup drive on the server to be designated by the network administrator. When are the backups to be performed? Suggested backup times are to be performed once a week. Daily changes will be completed through incremental backups. Where are the backups to be maintained? Data will be stored at a secure off-site location. What is the rationale for the selection of the proposed back-up strategy? Since data backup is completed daily, only one day of data could potentially be lost in the event all power systems fail. How long are backup media to be archived? Every five years the backup media will be archived and rotated.

12 Project Summary Tracee Spring Individual Group Reflections When I first looked at the project, I felt overwhelmed and even made the comment that I could never do it on my own. Once we divided the project amongst the group members, I felt better but not completely sure of myself. Once we started to discuss the project as a whole, I felt much better. I enjoyed mapping out the cabling and extra drop locations. I love math and problem solving! I learned so much from collaborating with the other group members. We reviewed the budget. We discussed things like how much cable we would need. We also discussed my reasoning for running the cables in a certain location and logical placement of the wireless access point and the extra dual drops for expansion. When I met with my group and shared my progress, I thought I might have messed up. I felt great when I found out that I didn t do so bad. I enjoyed doing my part and collaborating with the other group members. Working in a group was very realistic because in real life a networking team will work together to complete the task. I feel confident now that I could successfully network a small office if I had to. Kevin Mumphrey As in an actual business setting, you must be able to collaborate with your coworkers to successfully plan a project as elaborate as this one, and in such a short period of time. So with this challenge, even from afar, I believe that our group worked in unison to successfully complete our goal. Even though I have never had to create a network design project, I feel confident that if I am ever called on to work on a project of this magnitude, I would be able to deliver. This class has truly created a new interest for me. I ve been around technology in many forms for most of my career, but now I can add network technology to my resume. I look forward to future projects on this level.

13 Karen Augustine As I look back on this project, I really enjoyed working together with my team. What I learned from it was the technology layout that goes into the network design of a small business, having said what I take away from this project is the importance of knowing your clients needs and wants and then trying to meet somewhere in the middle all within the allotted budget. I also learned that in a business you delegate and then you allow people the freedom to do what they do best. Usually it s what they enjoy about their job. The end result will be a win win for everyone the client and the business. Wendy Thompson I have worked in the field of technology for the past 15 years. I have always admired my network personnel and wished to learn more about network infrastructure. This course afforded me the opportunity to advance my knowledge of Information Technology and the inner workings of how a network is configured from basic planning to installation and project completion. It has been a rewarding course and I am thankful of the collaborative efforts of my classmates in completing this project.
