2 Description Increased Maximum DASD Capacity Capacity (GB) Model V4R3 V4R K rpm Disk Units More Function and Performance The new, faster 10,000 rpm 8.58 GB disk units can improve disk storage utilization significantly...especially in heavy transaction processing environments. 10K rpm 8.58 GB disk units connected to the PCI RAID Disk Unit Controller (#2741) or RAID Disk Unit Controller (#6533) can result in: Up to 20% more users per drive at utilization limits OR Proportionately fewer disk arms required for the same number of users 10K rpm 8.58 GB disk units connected to the PCI RAID Disk Unit Controller (#2748) can result in: Up to 60% more users per drive at utilization limits OR Proportionately fewer disk arms required for the same number of users Performance benefits will vary with workload and by system configuration. PCI RAID Disk Unit Controller Significantly increase write cache from 4 MB in the current controllers to 26 MB in the new controller (#2748). The disk performance can be improved for write-intensive applications. 1.6 GB Read Cache Device Improve disk read performance up to 50% using the PCI RAID Disk Unit Controller (#2748) and the 1.6 GB Read Cache Device. Keep most actively-read data in cache memory. The Read Cache Device is most efficient in read-intensive applications. You could use it instead of adding more disk units, increasing main storage, or upgrading the processor. Cache performance simulation is provided with OS/400 V4R4 as a planning tool. You can evaluate potential benefits of cache for specific system loads. An OS/400 command helps you gather statistics from the PCI RAID Disk Unit Controller (#2748). Instructions on how to use the simulator are available from the AS/400 Information Center on CD-ROM (SK3T-2027) or the Internet at: /ic2924/info/index.htm Cryptographic Coprocessor Transacting business and transmitting information over networks (such as the Internet) raise important questions on document control and security. How are business and personal identities authenticated? How is the integrity of transmitted digital information maintained? How is digital information kept private? How do you prevent a transaction from being refuted? The common denominator in solving these problems is cryptography. PCI Cryptographic Coprocessor (#4800) is offered on all 6XX/SXX/7XX models. Coupled with a no-charge Cryptographic Access Provider licensed program from IBM, feature #4800 provides a rich level of cryptography function. Why hardware-based cryptography? Hardware cryptography provides more secure, tamper-resistant storage for cryptographic keys, for business applications that include: Banking transactions Electronic data interchange (EDI) Secure electronic transaction (SET) Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) financial PIN processing PIN-based debit card point-of-sale (a rapidly emerging application) Today, you need to store cryptographic keys in hardware for secure payment systems. In the future, applications like Net.Commerce with SET payment will also require storage of cryptographic keys in hardware. The PCI Cryptographic Coprocessor (#4800) enables you to implement the IBM Common Cryptographic Architecture (CCA). It is intended primarily for banking and financial applications. Feature #4800 replaces the current Cryptographic Processor features (#2620/#2628). ISDN Communication Adapters Two ISDN adapters consolidate a wide variety of connectivity needs for remote devices attached to the AS/400e servers, including: Remote computers/devices connected to a phone network via an ISDN connection. Example: another AS/400 with ISDN. Remote computers/devices connected to an analog line. Example: a laptop PC with an integrated V Kbps modem. Refer to the Product Preview in the Overview regarding support for remotely-attached Fax machines. Any combination of eight remote devices can be connected simultaneously. SLIP/PPP and IDLC protocols are supported

3 Integrated Analog Modem Simplify remote device attachment to the AS/400e servers. Any combination of eight of the following remote devices can be connected simultaneously using SLIP/PPP, SDLC, or fax protocols: Remote computers/devices connected to an analog line. The mode of operation is determined by a hardware jumper. #2748 is shipped with the jumper set in non-compression mode. The #2748 controls Ultra2, Ultra, and Fast Wide SCSI disk units. In addition to RAID-5 protection for disks, #2748 serves as a high-performance controller for disks protected by system mirroring or disks with no protection. In the RAID-5 configuration, disk unit protection costs less than mirroring. #2748 also supports #4331/#6831 (1.6 GB Read Cache Device), which can increase performance in read-intensive applications. #4331/#6831 is supported only when #2748 is not in compression mode. #2748 is specified on all new system orders with OS/400 V4R4, when a PCI disk controller is required. The #2748 controller supports a maximum of 15 disk units. A minimum of four disk units of the same capacity are needed for a valid RAID 5 configuration. A maximum of three arrays are allowed per controller, with a maximum of ten disk units allowed per array. All disk units in an array must be of the same capacity. Parity is spread across four disk units for arrays of four to seven disk units. Parity can be spread across either four or eight disk units for arrays of eight to ten disk units. Systems with eight to ten disk units in an array find the parity, for that array, spread across eight disk units. For systems with fewer than eight disk units in an array, and later upgraded to eight, nine, or ten disk units, the RAID function must be stopped and then started before parity will be spread across eight disk units. For best performance use disks, disk controllers, and storage expansion devices capable of Ultra2 SCSI performance. Models 640, 650, S30, S40, 730, and 740. One SCSI PCI slot required on Models 600 and S10, and S20 without #5064 (System Unit Expansion). Miscellaneous #0205 RISC-to-RISC Data Migration: Used on initial orders for 7XX servers, this specify code designates that the new server will replace (not upgrade) an installed AS/400 (RISC) model. When #0205 is on the order, manufacturing will only load SLIC and up through QSYS of OS/400. This will facilitate migrating some of the OS/400 information from the installed system. In addition to the new server, enough DASD must be ordered to hold all the data from the current model, as well as the required software on the new server. Specify Code #5000 (SW Preload Required) is mutually exclusive with #0205. The new AS/400 RISC server will replace (not upgrade) an installed AS/400 RISC model. The migration process requires that the installed model be at the same version and release level of OS/400 and other licensed programs as the new server. Financial considerations of upgrades to the installed software should be reviewed as part of the migration planning. More information, and an updated AS/400 System Upgrade and Data Migration Road Map (RISC-RISC) is available at: rrmap/ Education Support The appropriate curriculum will be updated, as necessary, to include the content of this announcement. Use of these facilities is optional. The security measures supplied by OS/400 are designed to reduce the risk of users changing or destroying data resources, but do not prevent it. The OS/400 security features include the use of passwords, a security option to limit a user to only those functions provided by customer-designed menus, and a security option to limit read/write access for files, libraries, and folders during normal operations. To achieve increased security, the OS/400 controls should be combined with physical security, division of duties and other appropriate measures. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
