1 Hardware Announcement October 15, 24 IBM i Express Edition A basic infrastructure for running core business applications Overview To streamline internal and distributor processes, the machine type/model/feature structure for the 52 Express Edition is modified. The eserver i5 52 Express Edition is now packaged under machine type 945. Some of the feature numbers used to package the Express Edition are different than the Express Edition announced earlier. At the package level, all features and functions remain the same. The eserver i5 52 Express Edition offerings include sufficient hardware and software to be a solid foundation for small or medium-sized business computing. These attractively priced servers include i5/os 7 to 14 GB of disk 1 to 2 GB of memory 3 GB QIC tape drive DVD-ROM drive Twinax, LAN, and communication ports Specified software licenses RAID configurations IBM Business Partners can enhance the standard configurations with additional features and can offer a wide selection of application solutions, from cross-industry general accounting to industry-specific vertical solutions, all tailored to the specific needs of the small and medium-sized enterprise. The Express Edition is available through Business Partners only and is not available from IBM directly. 2 Description IBM eserver i5 52 Express Edition Offerings The 945 model 52 Express Edition is a 1-way server based on IBM POWER5 technology. Each 52 system unit has: Eight memory slots Six PCI-X slots Eight disk slots (four enabled) One half-high slot for tape devices Two slimline slots for DVD drives Optionally, the other four disk slots can be enabled in the system unit. Two 1 Gbps/1 Mbps/1 Mbps Ethernet LAN ports Two HSL-2/RIO-G ports (for one HSL/RIO loop) Two SPCN ports Two serial ports Two HMC ports Two USB ports IBM i5/os V5R3 supports the use of all of the hardware elements listed except one slimline slot, two serial ports, and two USB ports. These components are reserved for other operating systems running on the 52. The Express Edition servers implementing partitioning require an IBM 731 Hardware Management Console (HMC). The HMC is not required for a partition to run, but it is required for an eserver i5 server to create, define, and change the partition. An HMC can also serve as an i5/os system console. Multiple partitions and multiple POWER5 processor-based servers can be supported by an HMC, located locally or remotely attached to the eserver i5 server. The Express Edition is tailored specifically to small and medium-sized enterprises and is available in five offerings. All eserver i5 52 Express Edition offerings include hardware and i5/os. Offerings #1, #2, and #3 feature mirrored disk protection. Offerings #4 and #5 feature RAID disk protection. The 52 Express Edition offerings are available at initial order only as deskside servers. They can later be converted to a rack-mount configuration, or additional features can be added by chargeable MES orders. These offerings are shipped from IBM with the system console on twinax workstation controller as the default setting. Additional price details can be obtained from the configurator or the Internet. Additional considerations The Express Editions with the 5/3 CPW/OLTP processors can be upgraded to the 1,/6 CPW/OLTP processors with the following conversions: Edition feature #739 to feature #7392 Edition feature #7391 to feature #7392 Edition feature #7393 to feature #7394 The conversion includes only the 1,/6 CPW processor card. As with any edition upgrade, the other hardware and software content defined in the richer edition is not included in the upgrade price. There are no feature conversions into server feature #9 or out of server feature #91. New feature availability matrix A indicates features available for ordering on the specified models. S indicates a feature supported on the new model during a model conversion. These features work on the new model, but additional quantities of these features cannot be ordered on the new model; they can only be removed. N indicates that the feature is not supported on the new model and must be removed during the model conversion. As additional features are announced, supported, or withdrawn, this list will be updated. Business Partners can use the software order process to order additional IBM software for end-user customers. Software shipped on the 52 Express Edition offerings is subject to normal licensing terms. Publications There are no new publications.
