BE VERY CAREFUL to dspose of fber ends properly. The fbers create slvers that easly puncture the skn and cause rrtaton. 1. Carefully remove the protectve sleeve from the connector. 2. Frmly support the connector assembly. 3. Place the blade of the scrbe tool drectly above the epoxy, and lghtly draw the beveled edge across the fber parallel to the tp of the ferrule. See Fgure 7. After scorng the fber, pull t straght away from the connector. Tp Pull Fber Straght Away Fber Fgure 7 Scrbe Tool 4. Insert the connector nto the polshng bushng. SeeFgure8. Short Stran Relef (Ref) 3.8. Polshng the Fber Fgure 8 Polshng Bushng 1. Choose a flat end fnsh or physcal contact (PC) end fnsh. The flat end fnsh s recommended when the connector mght be exposed to a tough mechancal envronment, and the PC end fnsh s recommended for snglemode connectors and wll provde better performance by reducng the optcal power reflected back to the source. 2. For the flat end fnsh, place the whte polshng pad on the polshng plate. For the PC end fnsh, place the green polshng pad on the polshng plate. 3. Place the 5--mm polshng flm on top of the polshng pad. CAUTION! ALWAYS place the polshng bushng on a clean area of the polshng flm. NEVER start polshng on or across a drty secton of the flm. 4. Holdng the polshng bushng, not the connector, start polshng very lghtly. Polsh n an elongated fgure 8 pattern. See Fgure 9. Intally a small amount of exposed fber wll be worn away. Ths s ndcated by a narrow whte trace on the flm. As the exposed fber wears away, the trace wll wden and darken, ndcatng that epoxy s beng removed. At ths pont a moderate downward force may be appled whle polshng. Check the tp of the ferrule often, and stop polshng on the 5--mm flm when the epoxy s lght blue. 5. Clean the polshng bushng and connector assembly wth an alcohol fber wpe. 5 of 7
6 Fgure 8 Pattern Fgure 9 6. For the flat end fnsh, use the 1--mm flm on the whte polshng pad, and polsh the fber untl only a very lght blue trace of epoxy remans. For the PC end fnsh, use the 1--mm flm on the green polshng pad, and polsh the fber for about 20 seconds. 7. Clean the polsh bushng and connector assembly wth an alcohol fber wpe. 8. For both type end fnshes, usng the.3--mm flm on the approprate polshng pad, polsh the fber untl all the epoxy s gone. Use only a lght force on the polshng bushng. DO NOT over polsh. Usng the mcroscope, examne the tp of the ferrule. Stop polshng as soon as all the epoxy has been removed. Ths ndcates that drt was present durng the polshng process. For PC end fnsh, some scratches can be removed by further polshng wth polshng compound. Apply a fresh drop of compound to an unused area of the polshng cloth, and polsh for 10 seconds. Re--examne the endface. DO NOT polsh agan f scratches reman. For flat end fnsh, polsh for 15 seconds on the.3--mm flm. Re--examne the endface. S Small pts n the endface. Ths ndcates that the fber was polshed too long on ether the 5-- or 1--mm flm. Some pttng mght not nterfere wth connector performance f t s not n the core area. S A lot of pts n the endface. Ths ndcates that the fber was polshed too long on the 5--mm flm. S A large fracture at the edge of the fber (small chps n the outer rm of the fber are permssble). Ths ndcates that the fber was broken below the surface of the ferrule durng cleavng or ntal polshng. 2. Place the protectve cap on the ferrule of the connector f the connector s not gong to be mated mmedately. 9. For the flat end fnsh, clean the connector wth an alcohol fber wpe, and dry wth a lnt--free cloth or tssue. For the PC end fnsh, remove the connector from the polshng bushng and place the fnal polshng flm on the polshng pad. Apply a few drops of water to an unused area of the flm. Move the connector on the water n 20 mm [.75 n.] dameter crcles for 25 seconds to polsh the fber. Tp Acceptable Fber Small Perpheral Chps One pece of fnal polshng flm wll be suffcent for 10 to 20 connectors. Fne Polshng Lnes 10. Clean the connector wth an alcohol fber wpe, and wpe dry wth a lnt--free cloth or tssue Inspectng the Endface NEVER nspect or look nto the end of a fber when optcal power s appled to the fber. The nfrared lght used, although t cannot be seen, can cause njury to the eyes. Tp Unacceptable Dark Scratches Fber A Lot of Pts 1. Inspect the polshed fber and ferrule (endface) wth the mcroscope. Refer to Fgure 10, and check for the followng: S Dark scratches on the endface. Fgure 10 6 of 7
