INTRODUCTION LghtCrmp SC ceramc multmode smplex and duplex fber optc connector kts (smplex shown n Fgure 1) are desgned to be appled to fber optc cable. The connectors accommodate buffer szes 250--mm (coated fber) and 900--mm (tght buffer) and are used wth 125--mm glass fber cable only. Read ths materal thoroughly before startng assembly. Dmensons n ths nstructon sheet are n metrc unts [wth U.S. customary unts n brackets]. Fgures are for reference only and are not drawn to scale. : Any jacketed cable used wth SC connectors must allow for the axal movement of the buffered fber n the jacket whch occurs when the connector s mated to another connector or devce. Certan cable constructons do not allow axal movement and are not sutable for use wth SC connectors. Refer to Inspecton Specfcaton for a method of determnng whether a gven cable constructon allows axal movement (result of the buffer pull test). These connectors are fully compatble wth OPTIMATE* SC connectors (that requre epoxy) and all other manufacturer SC multmode connectors (that do or do not requre epoxy). Couplng Receptacle Kt [ ] s used to mate two smplex SC connectors and Couplng Receptacle Kt [ ] s used to mate two duplex SC connectors n free -hangng or panel -mount applcatons. These nstructons apply only to LghtCrmp SC ceramc multmode connector kts when used wth jacketed cable, buffered fber, or coated fber. Reasons for ressue of ths nstructon sheet are provded n Secton 10, REVISION SUMMARY. 2. DESCRIPTION The smplex connector kt conssts of a dust cover, connector housng, plug assembly, crmp eyelet, nner eyelet, stran relef, bare fber boot, small tubng, and large PVC tubng. See Fgure Make sure that the fber extends beyond the edge of the cleave tool. If t does not, scrbe the fber usng the sapphre pen scrbe tool as follows: a. Hold the blade between a 3 and 5_ angle (about the dameter of one fber) from the surface of the ferrule, and gently brush the blade across the fber. See Fgure 12. DO NOT apply force to the fber wth the blade whle scrbng snce excessve force may fracture the fber nsde of the ferrule makng the connector unusable. If the cleave tool s not used properly, the damond blade wll be damaged. All screws on the tool are factory preset. Adjustments wll result n poor cleaves. b. Grasp the protrudng fber lghtly between the thumb and forefnger; then pull n lne wth the connector. If the fber does not scrbe easly, re--scrbe the fber and try agan. A proper scrbe, close to the ferrule surface, s essental for obtanng a successful fber polsh. 3. Push the plug assembly ferrule nto the bore untl the ferrule stops at the pan head screw. 4. Pull the flm taut, and ar polsh the connector tp by gently rubbng the tp of the connector n small crcles (or fgure--8 pattern) untl the protrudng stub of the cleaved fber no longer makes scratches on the flm. See Fgure 13. DANGER To avod personal njury, hold the plug assembly away from your face when pushng the actuator button. Durng the ntal stages of polshng, be careful to avod breakng off the fber nsde of the ferrule, thereby makng the connector unusable. To safely dspose of the cleaved fber, nvert the cleavng tool and plug assembly over a contaner, or use a pece of maskng tape (wth the stcky sde facng up) to catch the fber. 3. Place a pece of the.3--mm polshng flm on top of the reslent pad. 4. Gently nsert the connector nto the polshng bushng (the connector wll snap nto place). 6 of 8 Tyco Electroncs Corporaton

Pull the bare buffer boot back, then feed the fber through the slot n the tool, and push the plug assembly forward untl the plug assembly and housng snap together. Push the bare fber boot forward to protect the fber. 5. Place the plastc polshng bushng onto the polshng flm and move the bushng n a fgure--8 pattern whle supportng the weght of the bushng for the frst three fgure--8 patterns to prevent the fber from breakng or scorng the flm. Scored flm should be replaced mmedately to prevent fber breakage. DO NOT wet the polshng flm wth water. These connectors requre a dry polsh. 6. Usng gentle pressure on the bushng, contnue polshng for 25 to 30 more fgure--8 patterns. 7. Remove the connector from the polshng bushng, and clean t wth a lnt--free cloth or tssue. Dabbng the ferrule end face on a reslent pece of tape wll remove any stubborn polshng grt. Usng a lnt--free cloth lghtly dampened wth sopropyl alcohol wll remove any tenacous debrs from the end face. A protrudng fber (PF) polsh often provdes superor connector performance. It s recommended to leave the fber protrudng slghtly (approxmately 5 mm [.0002 n.] from the ferrule surface. 8. Place the plug assembly n the approprate receptacle or f the assembly wll not be used mmedately, place the dust cap onto the plug assembly. 8. ASSEMBLING THE CONNECTOR 1. Insert the plug assembly nto the connector housng. The key on the housng must be toward the front (fber end) and must lne up opposte to DANGER: Never Vew Actve Fber Sgnals 9. INSPECTING THE FIBER DANGER ALWAYS DISCONNECT the cable from the power sgnal source before nspectng the fber. The nfrared lght used, although t cannot be seen, can cause njury to the eye. 1. Usng the mcroscope, nspect the fber. If possble, place the far end of the fber near a brght lght. Compare the fber end to the examples shown n Fgure 14, and take any recommended acton. 2. Verfy that the fber s flush wth (or s protrudng slghtly from) the ferrule surface by movng the mcroscope focus control. If the fber and the ferrule surface come nto focus together, the fber s flush. If the fber comes nto focus before the ferrule surface (when movng toward the end face), the fber s protrudng too much and addtonal polshng on the.3--mm flm s requred.
