3 Introducton How to use ths gude APG1 and APG2 pagers are desgned for use n both on-ste and wde area pagng systems. The robust plastc case s ftted wth a removable clp that allows the pager to be worn on a belt or n a pocket. A safety cord wth clp s also suppled. The APG1s an alphanumerc pager. The APG2 s an alphanumerc pager that can receve speech messages where the system lcence allows. Pagers have a memory that can store up to 80 characters. Messages are dsplayed n blocks of eght characters and can be revewed and deleted when requred. To perform the requred task smply follow the paragraphs n the left column. To gve you further an column appears on the rght hand sde of the nstructons. Ths gves addtonal for the step that you are followng or, n some cases, the result of your actons. To prepare your pager for use Before you use your pager for the frst tme... The dsplay can be nverted by the user so that messages are legble whchever way round the pager s worn. The operatonal prompts may be dsplayed n any of sx languages. Please ensure that the battery s new (dsposable) or fully charged (rechargeable). To ensure that a rechargeable battery s fully charged place your pager n a chargng rack for 14 hours. Fourteen dfferent bleep tones are avalable. Two volume levels or slent operaton can be selected. A lght flashes durng the call. Each pager can be programmed wth up to seven dfferent addresses. The frst address s the pager s Indvdual Code number and the remanng sx are Group Codes. Each Group Code can be allocated to any number of pagers to allow them to be called smultaneously. To nsert (or change) the battery Press down on the battery door, slde t towards the centre and hnge t outward to reveal the battery compartment. Addresses may be entered or changed by sendng specal programmng calls to the selected pager. Invert the pager and allow the old battery to slde out. The pagers are powered by one AA sze cell (battery); ths can be ether dsposable or rechargeable. A rechargeable cell wll be charged when the pager s placed n a chargng rack. Place the new battery (sze AA) nto the compartment wth ts postve termnal facng outwards. A low battery ndcaton s made on the pager s dsplay when cells requre replacement or rechargng. Vbrator (optonal). Hnge the door over the battery, press down and slde t towards the sde of the pager case untl t clcks nto poston. A dsplay back lght. The pager wll bleep and dsplay two crosses to show that t s actve. 4 5

4 If your pager shows: NO CODES... You wll need to program t wth an Identty Code before t can be used. Please refer to your suppler for detals. Pager Controls All the functons of your pager are controlled by pressng combnatons of the three push buttons on the sde. To swtch your pager off Press and hold the power button. The functon button When your pager was confgured a number of user selectable functons were enabled. You can access these usng ths button whlst n the selecton mode (please refer to the secton User selectable functons for detals). When you enter the selecton mode the screen on your pager wll show the avalable functons n sequence. Each opton s dsplayed for a short perod before changng to the next. Whlst a functon s dsplayed t can be swtched between the settngs by pressng button ƒ. Functons that can be swtched on or off are selected when a tck (3) s shown and deselected by a cross (X). If alternatve settngs are offered then the text ndcates the choce (e.g., HIGH VOL or LOW VOL). Message button When the dsplays go blank, release the button. Ths button controls message revew. To swtch your pager on You can press recevng a call. to cancel the bleep tone whlst Press and hold untl the dsplays show two crosses. To reprogram your pager wth dentty codes, Indvdual (IC) or Group (GC) Release the button. You wll need to be able to send programmng calls from your pagng encoder (keyboard) to carry out ths procedure. Please refer to the encoder user gude for detals. 6 7

IMPORTANT: BEFORE PROGRAMMING YOUR PAGER PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU FIT A NEW OR FULLY To use your pager To receve pagng calls Wat untl the dsplay shows release. then press and CHARGED BATTERY. FAILURE TO DO SO MIGHT RESULT IN LOST CODES. The dsplay wll scroll through the When your pager receves a call t wll bleep and dsplay a message (and vbrate). BLEEP ndcates that there s no message. The sound of the bleep tone selected by the system operator s normally chosen to ndcate the acton that you should take. The dsplay wll frst show and then the Indvdual Code. To change the Indvdual Code press and hold button user selectable optons (e.g., dsplay, slent, volume) before reachng PROGRAM? The current Indvdual Code wll be shown, for examlple: The dsplay wll show BLEEP, SPEECH or a message. Press the message button f you wsh to cancel the bleep tone whlst recevng the call. SPEECH (avalable on APG2 pagers) ndcates that a speech message s about to be transmtted. When the bleep tone has fnshed you wll receve the speech message. whle t s dsplayed. After you have receved a message call you wll offered Send a programmng call from the pagng encoder. the opton to: When the new code appears release the button. If you do not wsh to save the message momentarly The pager wll show the Group Codes (GC) n sequence. press To add, change or delete a Group Code press and hold whle t s dsplayed. If you do nothng your pager wll store the message. The message wll reman on the dsplay untl you receve another call. Send a programmng call from the pagng encoder When the new code appears release the button. The dsplay wll change to show the next Group Code. To change the top dsplay orentaton when n a chargng rack If you wsh to add, change or delete the code press and hold and send a programmng call. The dsplay wll show To alter the orentaton of the dsplay press button durng the frst second of entry nto the rack. The selecton remans n the memory. If you do not wsh to make changes do not press the button and allow the pager to return to normal operaton. to ndcate that your pager has returned to normal operaton. 8 9

6 Low battery When s dsplayed you must replace or recharge (as approprate) the battery as soon as possble. Out of range NOTE: You must never place a pager wth a DISPOSABLE battery n a chargng rack. To vew the messages press and hold untl the last message s dsplayed. Release the button. The pager wll dsplay all the messages n sequence. When all messages have been dsplayed the pager wll show: If you wsh to pause the dsplay press and hold The number of each message s shown on the dsplay. If you do not delete the revewed messages the dsplays wll show the number of stored messages. If ths opton was selected durng confguraton your pager wll bleep and dsplay RANGE? f you are out of range of the transmtter for more than 40 seconds. To revew and delete stored messages The message store has a capacty of 80 characters. When the store s full, new messages wll overwrte the exstng ones, startng wth the oldest. Your pager wll contnue to dsplay RANGE? untl t receves a vald transmsson. Other actve pager functons wll be dsplayed alternately. Dsplay backlght When stored messages are revewed the dsplay wll be llumnated automatcally. Press the message button momentarly f you wsh to clear all messages from the store. Indvdual message revew (User selectable opton) Press the message button stored messages. to dsplay the number of NOTe If you swtch your pager off or place t n a chargng rack (rechargeable batteres only) all messages wll be deleted. The dsplay wll show: You can set your pager (see 'User selectable functons', page 11) to revew messages usng ether of two optons: a b Block message revew. When you ntate the message revew your pager wll dsplay all the stored messages n sequence. If you choose to delete then all messages are cleared from the store. Indvdual message revew. Ths opton allows you to revew and delete any stored message. Block message revew (User selectable opton) Press the message button stored messages. to dsplay the number of The default message revew method s set durng pager confguraton (p13). If you select the alternatve then your pager wll revert to the default when you next swtch t on. When no messages are stored then the dsplays wll show: 0 M Press the message button agan to dsplay the ndvdual message number, startng wth the oldest. Hold the button n to scroll through the message numbers. Release the button when the message that you wsh to see s shown. When the message has been shown you wll be offered the opton to delete t. 7 User selectable functons You can customse some of the functons of your pager to sut your own requrements. Ths can be done at any tme. The followng s a complete lst of the functons. You wll only see those functons made avalable to you when your pager was confgured. To change the settng of a functon press whlst t s shown on the dsplay. Each tme you press the button the settng wll change. If you do not press the button for a short whle the pager wll move to the next functon. Message revew method (select ndvdual) (select block) Ths screen wll allow you to choose message revew faclty. Select a tck to use BLOCK MESSAGE revew or a cross to revew INDIVIDUAL MESSAGES. If you swtch the pager off t wll revert to the default settng the next tme that t s swtched on (the default s set durng pager confguraton - see below). Several functons are set as confguraton defaults n the factory. The headngs for these are n normal text. The remanng functons are shown n talcs. The user functons are shown on the TOP dsplay. The front dsplay wll show the last receved message (f any). Program If you wsh to program an dentty code (Indvdual or Group) press and follow the nstructons on page 5. Otherwse allow the pager to contnue through the Programmng nstructons can be found on page 7. selecton sequence. To access the selecton mode Press and hold button untl the ndvdual code s dsplayed then release t. The pager wll show the avalable functons n sequence. Press button ƒ only f you wsh to make a change. User groups When you have fnshed your pager wll return to normal operaton. Ths faclty allows you to jon (or leave) any of the groups programmed nto your pager. Each of the programmed groups s dsplayed n sequence. Press button ƒ to make your choce. Dsplay orentaton Ths nverts the dsplay to make t easer to read wherever you wear your pager. Slent mode You can stop your pager from bleepng whlst recevng a call. If you select SILENT the word wll be dsplayed alternately wth other actve pager functons e.g., RANGE, LOW BATT. To confgure your pager These procedures allow you to set the engneerng functons of your pager to allow t to operate wth your pagng system and to select user functons. Long ID Bleep volume Ths selecton wll lengthen the bleep perod to 24 seconds. You can stll cancel the tone n the normal way by pressng the message (bottom) button. Two bleep volume levels are avalable. WARNING If your are not sure how to set these engneerng functons please refer to your suppler. If you make an nvald settng your pager mght not work. You must delete all dentty codes from your pager before you can change the confguraton

8 To delete all codes Press and hold button untl the top dsplay shows the pager's current Indvdual Code. You wll need to be able to send programmng calls from your pagng encoder to carry out these procedures. Please refer to the approprate user gude for detals. To change the format and program codes wthout alterng the confguraton. Press and release button IMPORTANT: Please ensure that the battery s fully charged (rechargeable) or new (dsposable) before programmng the dentty codes otherwse they mght not be saved to memory. Release the button. The dsplay wll show the current format settng FORMAT s normally set n the factory from the orderng specfcatons. Allow the pager to go through the user selectons. e.g., Whlst the format s dsplayed, each tme you press The FORMAT letter shown MUST correspond to the format settng n the system encoder otherwse the pager wll not work. Wat untl the dsplay shows release. then press and IMPORTANT: Please ensure that the battery s fully charged (rechargeable) or new (dsposable) before programmng the dentty codes otherwse they mght not be saved to memory. the format wll change. Release the button when the requred format s dsplayed. A, B and C represent the three codng formats. Format C s the default Blck settng. A and B can be used for specfc systems (please refer to your suppler before usng these optons).. The dsplay wll frst show ndvdual code. Press and hold then the The dsplay wll show IC (Indvdual Code). Press and hold button Send a DELETE ALL programmng code from the system encoder. Send a programmng call for the requred Indvdual Code from the system encoder. Ths wll store the new format settng The dsplay wll show: When the new code appears release the button. Your pager s now ready to be confgured. Refer to the secton To confgurethe pager and program the dentty codes for detals. The pager wll show the Group Codes (G1 to G6) n sequence. Contnued on next page 14 15

Ths wll store the new code then, after a short whle, the frst 8 functon codes (shown n the table). for example, Block 1 poston: 1 = E, D, N, F, G, I (Language) 2 = S (Slent) 3 = R (Range) 4 = L (Lght) 5 = P (Swtch) 6 = A, B, C (Format) 7 = 0-8 (0 to 8 errors) 8 = L ( Long Bleep) When the new code appears release the button. The dsplay wll change to show the next Group Code. When your requred language s Language for prompts: E, Englsh; D, Dutch; N, Norwegan; F, French; G, German; I, Italan dsplayed, press and release button To confgure the pager and program the dentty codes IMPORTANT: Please ensure that the battery s fully charged (rechargeable) or new (dsposable) before programmng the dentty codes otherwse they mght not be saved to memory. SILENT If you select SILENT the pager wll not bleep on recept of a call. The lght wll stll flash, unless t has been dsabled (see 'lght' below) Swtch the pager off Press and hold button then swtch the pager on. The pager wll dsplay the software ttle, for example, To change the settng of a functon press whlst t s shown on the dsplay. Each tme you press the button the settng wll change. RANGE Ths functon, f selected, wll cause the pager to bleep and dsplay RANGE? f no vald transmsson has been receved for approxmately 40 s. Other actve pager functons wll be dsplayed alternately. The RANGE faclty must also be selected n the system encoder. If you do not press the button for a short whle the pager wll move to the next functon. LED (Lght) To prevent the LED from llumnatng select X for ths opton. POWER Select ths opton to prevent the pager beng swtched off. Contnued on next page 16 17

10 Contnued from prevous page FORMAT FORMAT s an engneerng functon and s normally set n the factory. The format letter shown MUST correspond to the format settng n the system encoder. The default settng s C. IMPORTANT Send a programmng call for the requred Indvdual Code from the system encoder. Ths wll save the settngs. ERRORS (error level) The dsplay shows a number between 0 and 8 whch ndcated the number of non-correctable errors that are permssble n each message block before a message s rejected as unusable. If a message s rejected n ths way the call s dsregarded and the pager does not respond. Corrupted characters are shown as blanks. When the new code appears release the button The pager wll show the Group Codes (GC) n sequence. The pager wll accept a maxmum of 6 group codes. To add a Group Code press whle t s dsplayed. LONG ID (long bleep) Select ths opton to allow the user to choose ether the normal bleep tme, 5 s or a long bleep tme, 24 s. Send a programmng call from the system encoder. Ths wll save the settngs. BITSPRE (decode algorthm) BLKMESS (default message revew method) Block message revew allows all the messages n the Ths s an engneerng functon only and must be set to 6. Ths screen wll allow you to set the default message revew faclty. Select a tck to default to BLOCK MESSAGES or a cross to default to INDIVIDUAL MESSAGES. You can temporarly change the settng from the "user selectable functons" (page 9). If you swtch the pager off t wll revert to the default settng the next tme that t s swtched on. When the new code appears release the button. The dsplay wll change to show the next Group Code. If you wsh to add another Group Code press and send a programmng call. store to be read at once n sequence. If the offer to DELETE? s accepted then all the messages are erased. If you do not wsh to make changes do not press the button and allow the pager to return to normal operaton. Indvdual message revew allows ndvdual messages to be selected, read and deleted. USRGRPS (user groups) Select USRGRPS to allow the user to jon or leave any of the groups programmed nto the pager. VIBRATE Ths selects the vbrator (where ftted)

11 To enter the open channel mode Swtch the pager off. Open channel s a dagnostc mode that allows the pager to dsplay from all transmtted calls. Ths s a 3 dgt code followed by the dentty code of the pager beng called. To ft the new clp hold t 90 to the pager case and nsert t nto the aperture. Press and hold button button. and then press the power The pager wll dsplay ts software ttle and, after a short whle, the frst 8 functon dgts. Lft the lockng tab, and whlst applyng pressure, and rotate the clp clockwse untl t clcks nto poston. Never rotate the clp wthout lftng the tab as you wll damage the case. Release the buttons. The remander of the functon dgts are dsplayed and the pager wll enter the open channel mode. To return to normal operaton momentarly press the power button. To replace the clp Please note: Under certan crcumstances your pager can be subjected to electrostatc dscharge. Ths can cause the unt to reset and go through the start-up sequence before returnng to normal operaton. Place your thumb on top of the clp and, usng a screwdrver, pull the lockng tab away from the pager body. The thumb pressure avods placng too much stran on the clp mountng. Whlst pressng the clp towards the pager body, rotate t antclockwse by 90 and gently pull t away from the case 20 21

12 Glossary of pagng terms Bleep Used to descrbe the sound made by a pager when called (also bleeptone, bleep-sound). Group Code A number shared between pagers allowng them to be called smultaneously. Indvdual Code A number representng the unque dentty of a pager allowng t to be called selectvely. Pager confguraton The process of selectng those pager functons that wll be avalable to the user. Ths normally forms part of system commssonng. Pager programmng The procedure requred to enter or change pager dentty codes (ndvdual and group). Open channel A dagnostc mode that allows a pager to receve all calls transmtted on a system and dsplay the results n code
