6 1Overvew 1 The Express or Select prnter, ncludng a descrpton of the prnter, the models avalable, and ther components Specfcatons for the PC used wth the prnter and the software that runs on the PC Ths chapter presents the followng: The purpose of ths manual Who should use ths manual

7 1-2 Overvew About ths manual Audence Ths manual provdes detaled nformaton about the Datacard Express or Select Class photo ID prnter. It also explans how to nstall, use, and mantan the prnter and ts prnter drver. To perform the procedures n ths manual, you must have the followng sklls: Ablty to read and understand wrtten and graphcal nstructons Ablty to operate a personal computer (PC) Experence wth Mcrosoft Wndows 98 or Wndows NT Ablty to load supples Ablty to perform smple troubleshootng usng wrtten and graphcal nstructons Datacard-authorzed servce personnel also use ths manual. About the Express or Select prnter Prnter models The Express or Select photo ID prnter ncludes the prnter and a prnter drver whch runs on a PC. The prnter uses supples such as prnt rbbon and blank cards when prntng cards. The Express or Select prnter prnts full-color or monochrome mages on one or both sdes of PVC cards. The mages prnted can nclude photos, text, logos, barcodes and dgtzed sgnatures. The prnter can also encode data on a card's magnetc strpe and program a smart card chp on a card. (These steps are commonly called personalzng the card.) Magnetc strpe encodng and smart card programmng are optons that can be purchased as part of the prnter. The prnter drver receves dgtal nformaton from a card creaton applcaton and processes the data to send to the prnter. When the prnter receves the data, t prnts the card. The drver keeps track of the progress of the card n the prnter, and sends data for the next card as soon as the prnter s ready and the data s avalable. See PC and software specfcatons on page 1-8 for more nformaton about the prnter drver and the PC on whch t runs. Several models of the prnter are avalable. ImageCard prnters can prnt full-color or monochrome mages, whle UltraGrafx prnters can prnt only monochrome mages. A prnter can be ordered wth the followng optonal modules: Magnetc strpe module, for ether 3-track encodng or sngle-track NTT encodng. The module s nstalled n-lne wth the prnt operaton. It encodes data on the magnetc strpe and then verfes the data.

8 Overvew 1-3 Smart card module. The smart card module s avalable wth a contact coupler. The Select 2 prnter s avalable wth a contactless (RF) coupler. Both prnters are avalable wth a contact staton wth external coupler. A custom smart card applcaton can use the module to ntalze and program the smart card chp on a card. Duplex module, avalable on Select Class prnters, whch can automatcally prnt on both sdes of the card. Table 1-1 lsts the models and ther features. Table 1-1: Express or Select prnter features avalable Model name Colors prnted Duplex module Magnetc strpe # Smart Card # ImageCard E Full color or monochrome No Yes # Yes # ImageCard S Full color or monochrome No Yes # No ImageCard S2 Full color or monochrome Yes Yes # Yes # UltraGrafx E Monochrome only No Yes # Yes # UltraGrafx S Monochrome only No Yes # No UltraGrafx S2 Monochrome only Yes Yes # Yes # #. Optonal. Only one opton--ether magnetc strpe or smart card--can be nstalled n a prnter. Monochrome prntng uses a rbbon wth a sngle color, such as black. To optmze monochrome prntng, use a monochrome prnthead cartrdge. An exstng prnter cannot have optons added; optons must be factory-nstalled. If you use a sold-color rbbon such as red or gold, choose Black (K) for the Prnt Rbbon Type (rather than usng Always Autodetect ). If you are usng a scratch-off rbbon, choose Black (K) for the prnt rbbon type. If you use any other rbbon type, the autodetect feature and the Prnt on both sdes selecton wll choose the correct selecton. If Always Autodetect s selected n the Wndows 98 Propertes dalog box, decde whether to power the prnter off and on to detect the new rbbon type or to change from autodetect to selectng a rbbon type. If you use a YMCK or YMCKT rbbon and you want to use a panel set for each sde of the card, you can power cycle the prnter and keep the Always Autodetect settng. If you use a YMCK or YMCKT rbbon and you want to use one panel set to prnt both sdes of the card, you must deselect the Always Autodetect settng and select the rbbon type and usage (such as YMC (color) front; K (black) back ) from the Rbbon Type lst. Make sure your rbbon type and card desgn are compatble. Change the card desgn Change the card desgn to use the new rbbon type or use a new card desgn, f needed. 66 5-12 Advanced Informaton Two-step prntng process You decde to mplement a two-step prntng process. You mght decde to preprnt cards wth nformaton such as a logo usng a monochrome rbbon, and then personalze cards usng a color (YMC) rbbon. Or, you mght personalze cards and then prnt scratch-off rbbon n an area of the card. You decde to add features to the card. For example, you mght add a Topcoat (T) panel on the front or back, or change from prntng color on the front only to prntng both sdes wth color. Usually, addng a feature to the card s a one-tme change. If you use a two-step prntng process, you should plan to prnt at least one step of the process as a batch. For example, f you prnt a one-color logo before you personalze cards, prnt enough cards wth the logo to last (you mght prnt enough for one day s personalzaton or one week s personalzaton). (In the followng process, you would begn wth step 3.) If you use the scratch-off rbbon and have one prnter, you must prnt each card twce, frst to personalze the cards, second to prnt the scratch-off materal. Plan to use a batch process, frst personalzng cards and then prntng wth the scratch-off rbbon. A suggested batch process s: 1 Personalze cards wth a rbbon that does not nclude a T panel. Use a rbbon such as YMCK or K. If you use a T panel, make sure the desgn blocks the T panel from prntng n the area where scratch-off rbbon wll be prnted. Be sure to prnt some sample cards for use n testng the scratch-off rbbon. Carefully handle prnted cards that you plan to prnt agan. Avod gettng drt or fngerprnts on the cards. 2 Run a prnter cleanng card. See Usng the prnter cleanng card on page Power off the prnter, and then nstall a monochrome prnthead. See Replacng the prnthead cartrdge on page Change the rbbon n the prnter. See Loadng the prnt rbbon on page Power on the prnter before usng the Propertes or Default Document Propertes dalog boxes. 6 Set the Prnt Rbbon Type to K. See Workng wth prnter settngs and data on page Set the Intensty value for K. See Changng operatonal settngs on page Use a card desgn for the scratch-off materal that has a black statc btmap over the areas where you want the scratch-off materal to be appled. 9 Prnt one or more sample cards. Run a cleanng card and return to step 1. If you use a two-step prntng process and use a monochrome rbbon for one step and a color rbbon for the other step of the process, you need to change from a monochrome prnthead to a color prnthead. Installng a color prnthead n an UltraGrafx (monochrome) prnter wll not permt you to prnt n color. The method of creatng an mage wth color rbbon s slghtly dfferent from the method of creatng an mage wth a monochrome rbbon. Datacard provdes two prntheads to support the needs of the two prntng methods. To acheve complete coverage wthout causng wrnkles or other prntng problems, use the correct prnthead for the type of rbbon you use. See Replacng the prnthead cartrdge on page 4-7 for nformaton on removng and replacng a prnthead. Change prnthead settngs Change prnthead settngs to match the new rbbon type f you use a two step prntng process. If you are changng features of a card desgn, you mght also decde to change prnthead settngs to acheve best results. For example, f you are addng text that prnts n black (K), you mght adjust K prntng ntensty for the clearest text prntng. If you use a color rbbon that ncludes a K panel, and then use monochrome rbbon (such as a red rbbon or a scratch-off rbbon), plan to change the K prntng ntensty, usng a process such as the followng: 1 Start dagnostcs. See Changng operatonal settngs on page 5-14 for nformaton. 2 Create a log for K ntensty values for each rbbon type you use. 3 Use the Prnthead tab to change K ntensty values. Record the current K value and rbbon type. 4 Change the K ntensty value, usng the followng gudelnes: For scratch-off rbbon, the recommended ntensty range s to Begn by settng the lower value (10000). Increase the value by 500 untl the scratch-off materal covers the ntended area so that you cannot see through the scratch-off materal. See Help for the Prnthead tab for detaled steps to follow.
