1 Volume XXII, Issue 6, February 2011 Arkansas Chapter Newsletter for the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc. FEBRUARY MEETING Central Arkansas Date: Wednesday, February 9 Location: LM Wind Power Cost: $20 Schedule: **No Board Meeting this Month** 11:30a.m. Lunch and Facility Tour Northwest Arkansas Date: Thursday, February 10 Location: Cherokee Casino, Siloam Springs Cost: TBD Schedule: 11:00a.m. Lunch and Facility Tour INSIDE THIS ISSUE Chapter Meeting Calendar: Page 2 Meeting Minutes: Page 3 Officers and Committee Chairs: Page 4 THE PRESIDENT S MESSAGE By Steve Keen I am writing you from the ASHRAE Winter Meeting. The Arkansas chapter is well represented in Las Vegas several consulting engineers and manufacturer s representatives from our chapter are here conducting Society business and touring the AHR Exposition. I have been able to talk with several of our members, caught a glimpse of some at a distance, and talked with others that have run into even more folks from the Arkansas chapter. I have even encountered old friends that have moved away, and by their continued success are able to give back to the HVAC industry through ASHRAE. This type of trip gives you many opportunities to see many of the products we use in our industry, to listen to presenters with innovative ideas for applying the products we use, for honing your skills with educational seminars, and to just get out of the office for a few days. Not to mention Las Vegas has something for all tastes for those few moments where you can get away from everything ASHRAE. Many manufacturers in our industry have receptions where you can meet and mingle with the folks you may have talked on the phone with over the years. These types of gatherings give you the opportunity to put a face with the voice, thank someone for helping you be successful, or offer your ideas on what might improve a product you currently apply in your day to day business. Log onto and go to Events to see future Winter Meeting and Annual Conference dates and locations. This month s Central Section meeting will be a tour of the LM Wind Power plant on Feb. 9 in Little Rock and the Northwest Section will tour Cherokee Casino in Siloam Springs on the Feb. 10. We will meet at the respective facility for each tour at the following times: 11:30a.m. at LM Wind Power and 11:00a.m. at Cherokee Casino. Do not go to Camp Aldersgate or AQ Chicken. Little Rock has become a hub for the wind power industry with multiple companies involved in wind technologies setting up shop in Central Arkansas. LM Wind Power provides composite material blades in lengths from about 30 meters to 60 meters. These blades go into assemblies that produce electrical energy from 1,300 kw up to 5,000 kw. The size of these blades will astound you. LM Wind Power uses an elaborate energy and heat recovery system to ventilate and air condition the manufacturing facility along with integration of equipment and building controls to manage the HVAC systems. LM Wind Power can provide safety glasses and foot protection. However, if you have safety glasses and steel toed footwear, please bring them with you for the tour. You should know about the hard work Chris Ahne (this year s Research Promotion Chairman) has been putting into raising funds for ASHRAE Research. Chris has many opportunities for all of us to contribute toward meeting our chapter goal this year. You can contribute $10.00 toward ASHRAE Research at the monthly meetings with a chance to win half of the pot, with the other half being contributed to ASHRAE Research in your honor. I would like to thank Tom Hanlon for contributing his half (Continued on page 3)

3 Page 3 There will be a Past President s Night at the REP theatre the 1 st or 2 nd week in May, no specific date has been set. Committee chairs need to be appointed by April before the CRC. There are no reimbursements or receipts to post. The 2010 audit is being completed by Steve Titus. There are 5 teams and 12 sponsors that have not paid for the fall golf tournament. Mike will send a list to Tony so that he can contact sponsors. The research check was sent out last month. The Tax preparation bill was $650, as opposed to the budgeted $550, due to the deadline to file. The Treasurer s report was approved as presented. ARKANSAS CHAPTER MEETING MINUTES Board Meeting of January 12, 2011 Marlon Joiner Secretary The previous meeting minutes were approved as presented in the newsletter. There is an RP scheduled event on February 15, held at Trane s office. It will be a Texas Hold em game with an entry fee of $50 and one opportunity to buy back in. Proceeds will be divided equally among the winner and ASHRAE research. YEA members will be invited to this fundraiser. Tony is still working on a golf tournament, with no confirmed date yet. Scholarship applications are due postmarked by January 21 st, which will allow 2 weeks for committee approval. The Arkansas ASHRAE website received a good review from the CRC. There is a YEA leadership weekend in Denver April 1 st -3 rd. There is currently no information on the website regarding registration. Next month s tour is at LM Wind Power. Appropriate PPE will be required. PRESIDENT S MESSAGE (Continued from page 1) back to ASHRAE Research last month. Upcoming events include a Texas Hold em tournament on Feb. 15 starting at 6:00p.m. See Tony DeMarco s flyer included with this month s newsletter for more information. Don t forget our spring golf outings in LR and NWA these golf tournaments raise a lot of money and go a long way toward meeting our chapter fund raising goal. Something new this year will be a silent auction at our Past Presidents evening. From what I hear the items to be auctioned are spectacular. Items like fly fishing trips, duck hunting, and theater tickets just to name a few. Chris will have more details as the time for Past Presidents night approaches. Finally, I listened in awe this morning to a young man shared about his early years in the Congo in Africa, how he escaped to Europe, and finally ended up in the United States as a young boy on his own. His story was simply one of self determination. Nothing was going to hold him back from accomplishing his goals. Although his early life was a series of unspeakable hardships and obstacles, he kept moving toward that goal of freedom. You can read his story in a book that he has written, which I will be glad to give you the information if you want to learn more. What I would like to pass on is to encourage you to set life goals and do whatever it takes to meet those goals. As this speaker said, you work today for tomorrow. He wasn t talking about personal wealth; instead he was talking about the imprint you have on today and the impact it will have on tomorrow. Think about it. Go home tonight and encourage your children, spend time with them, tell them they can be anything they want if they apply themselves, then help them make it happen. Page 3
