PpLink 2.2 will autmatically transfer yur studbk(s) frm PpLink versin 1.3 and 2.1 If yu have studbks frm an earlier versin f PpLink (1.0, 1.1, r 1.2), cpy and paste them frm the earlier versin s PpLink Databases flder (stred in C:\Prgram Files\PpLink 1.X\PpLink Databases) t the PpLink Databases flder in C:\Dcuments and Settings\User Name\My Dcuments\PpLink\PpLink Databases. Yu can then pen them thrugh the Open Databases dialg bx. Database Strage Lcatin Default PpLink Flder Lcatin: The default install lcatin fr PpLink databases was changed slightly t C:\Users\User Name\Dcuments\PpLink (remving the versin number frm the flder) this change insures a smther installatin prcess fr future releases. Changing PpLink Flder Lcatin: Users can nw alter the default lcatin t anther flder n their hard drive if desired using the functinality in the new Settings pp-up which is accessible when yu first pen PpLink. This ptin is typically nt recmmended fr mst users unless the lcatin f their My Dcuments flder is restricting installatin (e.g. their My Dcuments is mapped t a netwrk drive). New Mdules: there are three new mdules which studbk keepers can use t track data n individual s scial, enclsure, and medical histry. All three f these new mdules are ptinal and may nt be utilized by all studbk keepers. Users can shw/hide the mdules n the new Settings pp-up which is accessible when yu first pen PpLink r thrugh the Edit menu. The three new mdules are: Scial: The Scial Data Table allws yu t track scial interactins fr individuals within a studbk. Each Scial Event includes an event type (e.g. intrductin, altercatin), which individuals are invlved, and the event s general utcme. Enclsure: The Enclsure Data Table allws yu t track the enclsure, and thus scial grup histry, f the animals within yur studbk. Medical: The medical mdule was designed t keep track f imprtant medical infrmatin essential t daily care in eight different Medical Nte Type Categries. New Reprts Scial Cmpatibility Reprt: Displays a matrix f pairwise scial cmpatibility fr any individuals that have a recrded Scial Event in the new data mdule. Fcal Individual Enclsure Reprt: Displays an individual s enclsures ver time, as well as the grup cmpsitin (size, sex rati, age range) in the enclsure ver time. Enclsure Reprt: Displays the grup cmpsitin (size, sex rati, age range) f ne r all enclsures ver time at each change in grup cmpsitin r as f a certain date. Medical Ntes Reprt: Displays all recrded Medical Ntes fr all r a specific individual ver time. 3 Data Entry Imprvements Batch entering specimens: Batch specimen creatin nw allws yu t enter a Studbk ID Number rather than PpLink pre-assigning the number. Small bugs with batch entry and assigning sex were crrected. Finally, batch entry includes data in the new Scial, Enclsures, and Medical Ntes Data Tables. Aut-adding Birth/Death Events in Enclsures: If a studbk keeper is using the Enclsures Data Table, PpLink assists with aut-updating enclsure recrds when a birth r death is added t the Events table. Filters Search Ntes: Yu can nw search all nte/cmment fields in the Specimen Ntes, Scial Events, Enclsures, and Medical Ntes Data Tables using the functin in the Filter pp-up. PMx Exprt: Yu can exprt t PMx, the newest versin f the ppulatin management sftware mst frequently used t manage animal prgrams. Data Entry Imprvements Autfilling: When editing the sex and reprductive field f a new individual, the date and date estimate assciated with each field are aut-filled t reflect the birth date and birth date estimate. Batch entering specimens: when entering a new individual, users nw have the ability t easily batch enter duplicate individuals, changing their sex and lcal ID. Change in Reprductive Status language: Uncntracepted changed t Nt Cntracepted t mre accurately reflect an individual s status at the beginning f life. Specimen Ntes: The specimen nte date can nw be manually entered rather than being autmatically assigned as the date the nte was created Institutin List Search: During data entry users frequently need t lk up infrmatin abut institutins, including the crrect mnemnic. T facilitate speedy lkup f institutin data, we have included an Institutin List.xls in the PpLink flder (My Dcuments\ PpLink 2.1) t allw faster searching within Excel. Easily cpy and paste any table t Excel: In almst all data tables yu see thrughut the prgram, including the main viewer grid and tables in reprt, yu can right-click n the table and select Exprt t Excel. Imprvements t Reprts Life Table Reprt: This new reprt displays age-specific fecundity (Mx) and mrtality (Qx) values fr males and females in the studbk. 4 Histric/Current Institutin List Reprt: This new reprt lists bth current hlding institutins and histrical hlding institutins fr individuals in the studbk. Studbk Reprt: users can nw adding additinal parameters t the studbk reprt, including rearing, wner, birth type, UDFs, and specimen ntes. Specimen Reprt: nw includes a buttn titled Shw Descendants that generates a descendents list fr the animal being viewed in the specimen reprt. Age Outliers Reprt: Unknwn age animals are nw excluded frm the Age Outliers Reprt. Specimens with UNK/MULT Parentage and Descendents reprt: nw includes individuals whse parents are nt in the studbk Exprting: functinality added t multiple reprts, including exprting age pyramid and descendents/antecedents diagrams Exprting: reprts nw pp-up immediately fr easier viewing. New Specimen Ntes Filter Users can nw search within specimen ntes using Filter functinality. The specimen nte filter allws filtering f individuals that d/d nt cntain the exact text within a specimen nte (=, Nt =) r d/d nt cntain a specific wrd r phrase within a specimen nte (Cntains, Nt Cntains). Imprvements t SPARKS and ZRisk exprts: Previus versins f PpLink drpped events r individuals during exprt t SPARKS because f restrictins n SPARKS field lengths, values, and SPARKS less rich data frmat. PpLink 2.1 eliminates that drpping by assigning default values fr unacceptable field values. The user is alerted t these changes in a SPARKS errr reprt, and the user can then edit their data in SPARKS t crrect the default values. PpLink 2.1 nw exprts t the mst current versin f ZRisk, ZRisk 3.8. A ZRisk errr reprt is als generated as described fr the SPARKS exprt; upn exprt, the ZRisk Readme file gives mre details n using the exprted data in ZRisk. Imprvements t Overlay Functinality Users nw have the ptin t imprt verlay data frm an earlier versin f the same studbk. By clicking n File -> Imprt Overlay Data, users have the ability t navigate t a studbk flder and cpy data frm the verlay table int the studbk they re currently wrking n. This functin creates a new, identically named verlay in the studbk the user has pen. Multiple individuals with UNK/MULT parentage and descendents can nw be given analytical parents simultaneusly thrugh a new batch editr functin. Database Strage System Changed: The underlying studbk database strage system fr PpLink has been chanced frm a binary file (data.bin) t a SQL database. Yu wn t see this difference when yu re lking at yur database in PpLink, but the under-the-hd change means that yur studbk data are stred in a way that is mre permanent, secure, and accessible. With a SQL database, pwer users can use a different prgram, SQL Server Management Express, t view and exprt data and write custm queries fr mre detailed analyses (see Appendix 2 fr mre details). This database frmat als means that ther sftware can access PpLink data frm utside f the prgram, increasing flexibility fr future sftware develpment prjects. Imprvements t Renumber Specimen functin, including changing temprary IDs thrugh the database (i.e. in an ffspring s parentage fields) when a temprary ID is renumbered t a permanent ID. SPARKS studbk archive: When a PpLink database is created via imprtatin frm SPARKS, a cpy f the SPARKS studbk is nw archived in the PpLink database flder fr safe-keeping.
