1 Premiere Pro Basics The Adobe Premiere Pro user iterface is a combiatio of a videoeditig studio ad a electroic image-editig studio. If you re familiar with film, video editig, or audio editig, you should feel right at home workig withi Premiere Pro s Project, Moitor, ad Audio widows. If you have worked with such programs as Adobe After Effects, Macromedia Flash, or Macromedia Director, the Premiere Pro s Timelie, digital tools, ad paels should also be familiar to you. If you re completely ew to video editig ad computers, do t worry; Premiere Pro paels, widows, ad meus are efficietly desiged to get you up ad ruig quickly. To help get you started, this chapter provides a overview of Premiere Pro widows ad meus. Cosider it a thorough itroductio to the program s workspace ad a hady referece for plaig ad producig your ow digital video productios. Premiere Pro s Paels After you first lauch Premiere Pro, several paels automatically appear oscree, each vyig for your attetio. Why do you eed more tha oe pael opeed at oce? A video productio is a multifaceted udertakig. I oe productio, you may eed to capture video, edit video, ad create titles, trasitios, ad special effects. Premiere Pro widows help keep these tasks separated ad orgaized for you. COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL You ca access ay Premiere Pro pael by clickig its ame i the Widows meu. For example, if you wat to ope the Timelie, Moitor, Audio Mixer, History, Ifo, or Tools pael, you ca choose the Widow meu ad the click the desired pael ame. This sectio provides a overview of the paels that eable you to create the various elemets of your digital video project. Maipulatig Premiere Pro paels You ca work more efficietly if you kow how to group ad dock Premiere Pro s paels. Groupig ad dockig paels helps to esure that you re makig the best use of available scree real estate. All of Premiere Pro s video-editig tools reside i paels that you ca group or dock together i virtually ay combiatio. Whe paels are docked, they are attached to each other, so resizig oe pael resizes aother. Figure 1.1 shows the Program Moitor beig resized. Notice i the secod frame of Figure 1.1 that elargig the Program Moitor reduces the size of the Source Moitor pael. The images i Figure 1.1 are from the Premiere Pro CS3 QuickStart chapter. 3 Premiere Pro Basics 1 Figure 1.1 shows the Project pael grouped with the Effects ad Audio Mixer tabs peekig out from behid i the same pael group. You ca easily add or remove a pael from a group by clickig the ideted dots at the left-had corers of the tabs ad draggig the pael tab. If you wat a pael to appear as a stadard widow that floats above other paels, you ca drag the pael out from behid the others. As you read through the followig sectios that explai how to resize, group, ad separate paels, try adjustig a few paels. Resizig docked paels Widows that are grouped together are referred to as paels. To resize a pael, move the cursor over the dividig lie betwee paels. Whe the cursor chages to two arrows, as show i Figure 1.1, you ca drag left or right o the vertical border betwee paels, or up ad dow o the horizotal border betwee paels. If you wat to resize the pael both horizotally ad vertically, positio the mouse cursor over a pael corer. Whe the mouse poiter chages to four arrows, click ad drag the corer. Dockig ad groupig paels If you wat to dock oe pael with aother oe (the target pael), click ad drag it over to the top, bottom, left, or right portio of the target pael. Before releasig the mouse, wait for the dim preview of the docked pael to appear. If you are satisfied with the results, release the mouse; otherwise, press Esc. If you wat to place oe pael ito aother pael or group the paels click ad drag the pael s tab. Drag it ito the target pael, ad the release the mouse. The pael s tab ow appears o the far right of all existig tabs. Creatig floatig widows To separate a pael so that it floats o the scree idepedetly like a stadard widow, choose Udock pael i the pael s meu. Alteratively, press Ctrl/Ô while clickig the pael s tab. Release the mouse to create the ew floatig widow, ad the release Ctrl/Ô. Alteratively, you ca click ad drag the pael outside of Premiere Pro provided you have the scree space. Oce you create a ew floatig widow, you ca create a pael group by clickig ad draggig other paels to it. Closig ad savig workspaces Premiere Pro s primary paels sometimes ope automatically oscree. If you wat to close oe of them, simply click its Close widow (X) ico. If you have orgaized your widows ad paels i specific positios at specific sizes, you ca save this cofiguratio by choosig Widow Workspace New Workspace. After you ame your workspace ad save it, the ame of the workspace appears i the Widow Workspace submeu. Wheever you wat to use that workspace, simply click its ame. 31

4 Part I Gettig Started with Premiere Pro The Project pael If you ve ever worked o a project with may video ad audio clips as well as other productio elemets, you ca appreciate Premiere Pro s Project pael, show i Figure 1.2. The Project pael provides a overview of your productio elemets (ofte called assets), ad eve eables you to preview a clip by clickig its Play butto. As you work, Premiere Pro automatically loads items ito the Project pael. Whe you import a file, the video ad audio clips are automatically loaded ito the Project pael. If you import a folder of clips, Premiere Pro creates a ew bi (or folder) for the clips, usig the folder ame as the bi ame. Whe you capture soud or video, you ca quickly add the captured media to a Project pael bi before closig the clip. 5 Premiere Pro Basics 1 The New Item butto (show i Figure 1.2) eables you to quickly create a ew title or other productio elemet, such as a trasparet video clip (ofte used with Premiere Pro s Timecode video effect to overlay timecode over other clips), color matte (covered i Chapter 15), or bars ad toe (used to calibrate color ad soud whe editig). The New Item butto also allows you to add ew sequeces, offlie files, black video, ad uiversal coutig leaders. If you click the Ico butto, all productio elemets appear as icos oscree rather tha i list format. Clickig the List butto returs the display of the Project pael to List view. If you wat to quickly add Project pael elemets to the Timelie, you ca simply select them ad the click the Automate to Sequece butto. If you expad the Project pael by clickig ad draggig the pael border, you see that Premiere Pro lists the start ad stop times as well as the i ad out poits ad the duratio of each clip. If you click the Project pael s meu, you ca choose to add or remove colums from the Project pael. You ca also rearrage the colum order by draggig them. I the Project pael, productio assets are grouped accordig to the curret sort order. You ca chage the order of productio elemets so that they are arraged by ay of the colum headigs. To sort by oe of the colum categories, simply click the category. The first time you click it, productio items are sorted i ascedig order. To sort i descedig order, click the colum headig agai. The sort order is represeted by a small triagle. Whe the arrow poits up, the sort order is ascedig. Whe it poits dow, the sort order is descedig. TIP To fid a productio item i the Project pael, simply click i the Project pael s Fid field ad type what you re lookig for. Next, choose the category that you are searchig for (such as Name, Scee, Shot/Take) i the I drop-dow meu. After the item or items are foud, you ca retur the Project pael view back to ormal by clickig the X that appears i the Fid field. TIP To play a clip i the thumbail moitor i the Project pael, click the clip ad the click the Play butto the small triagle ext to the thumbail moitor. To preserve space ad hide the Project widow s thumbail moitor, choose View Preview Area i the Project Pael Meu. This toggles the moitor display off ad o. To keep your productio assets well orgaized, you ca create bis to store similar elemets. For example, you ca create a bi for all soud files or a bi for all iterview clips. If the bi gets full, you ca see more elemets at oe time by switchig from the default Thumbail view to List view, which lists each item but does t show a thumbail image. Usig FlexBis If you create several bis, you ca easily maage them by usig Premiere Pro s FlexBi feature. This allows you to ope up differet bis i separate widows, or as tabs. To ope a bi as a separate widow, simply double-click it. Oce the bi opes i a separate widow, it ca fuctio like ay other pael. This meas you ca dock it or embed it withi other pael groups. To chage the default prefereces for how flex bis ope, choose Edit Prefereces Geeral. O a Mac, choose Premiere Pro Prefereces Geeral. 33

6 Part I Gettig Started with Premiere Pro If you do t wat to chage prefereces for FlexBi operatios, you ca use the followig keyboard commads to ope up bis: Ctrl/Ô+Double-click: Opes the bi i the project pael, with o other bis displayed. (To close the bi click the tiy folder ico beeath thumbail moitor display i the Project pael.) Alt/Optio+Double-click: Creates a tab for the bi i the paret bi. Clickig the tab displays the cotets of the child bi. TIP You ca chage the speed ad duratio of a clip by right-clickig the clip i the Project pael ad choosig Speed/Duratio. You ca also quickly place the clip i the Source Moitor by right-clickig the clip ad choosig Ope i Source Moitor. The Timelie pael The Timelie pael, show i Figure 1.3, is the foudatio of your video productio. It provides a graphic ad temporal overview of the video sequeces, effects, titles, ad trasitios that comprise your project. The Timelie is ot just for viewig it is also iteractive. Usig your mouse, you ca build your productio by draggig video ad audio clips, graphics, ad titles from the Project pael to the Timelie. By clickig ad draggig the curret-time idicator (the blue triagle), you ca jump to ay part of your productio. As you click ad drag, the time display at the top-left corer of the Timelie idicates the positio of the curret frame. Usig Premiere Pro tools, you ca arrage, cut, ad exted clips. By clickig ad draggig the work area markers at either ed of the work area bar edges of the light-gray bar at the top of the Timelie you ca specify the portio of the Timelie that Premiere Pro previews or exports. The thi, colored bar beeath the work area bar idicates whether a preview file for the project exists. A red bar idicates o preview, ad a gree bar idicates that a video preview has bee created. If a audio preview exists, a thier, light-gree bar appears. (To create the Preview file, choose Sequece Reder Work Area or press Eter to reder the work area.) TIP Rederig the work area helps esure that your project plays back at the project frame rate. If you create video ad audio effects, the Preview file stores the redered effects. Thus, the ext time you play back the effect, Premiere Pro does ot have to process the effect agai. Udoubtedly, the most useful visual metaphor i the Timelie widow is its represetatio of video ad audio tracks as parallel bars. Premiere Pro provides multiple, parallel tracks so that you ca both preview ad coceptualize a productio i real time. For example, parallel video ad audio tracks eable you to view video as audio plays. The Timelie also icludes icos for hidig or viewig tracks. Clickig the video Toggle Track Output butto (Eye ico) hides a track while you preview your productio; clickig it agai makes the track visible. Clickig the audio Toggle Track Output butto (Speaker ico) turs audio tracks o ad off. Beeath the Eye ico is aother ico that sets the display mode for clips i the track. Clickig the Set Display Style ico allows you to choose whether you wat to see frames from the actual clip i the Timelie or oly the ame of the clip. 34

7 Premiere Pro Basics 1 At the bottom-left corer of the widow, the Time Zoom Level slider eables you to chage the Timelie s time itervals. For example, zoomig out shows your project over less Timelie space, ad zoomig i shows your work over a greater area of the Timelie. Thus, if you are viewig frames i the Timelie, zoomig i reveals more frames. You ca also zoom i ad out by clickig the edges of the Viewig Area bar at the top of the Timelie. Whe previewig your work, click the Play butto to play it i the Source or Program Moitor. As you work, you ca also click ad drag i the tread area (serrated lies just below the clip) to jog, or slowly scroll, through your footage. Below the tread area is a triagular ico called the shuttle slider. You ca click ad drag the shuttle slider to jump to a specific clip area. As you click, the time display i the Moitor pael idicates your positio i the clip. The Moitor paels ca also be used to set i ad out poits. As discussed i The Premiere Pro QuickStart chapter, the i ad out poits determie which part of a clip appears i your project. 35

Premiere Pro provides five differet moitor paels: the Source Moitor, the Program Moitor, the Trim Moitor, the Referece Moitor, ad the Multi-Camera moitor. You ca access the Trim, Referece, ad Multi-Camera moitors from the Program Moitor s pael meu. Premiere Pro provides five differet moitor paels: the Source Moitor, the Program Moitor, the Trim Moitor, the Referece Moitor, ad the Multi-Camera moitor. You ca access the Trim, Referece, ad Multi-Camera moitors from the Program Moitor s pael meu. Source Moitor: The Source Moitor shows source footage that has ot yet bee placed o the video sequece i the Timelie. You ca use the Source Moitor to set i ad out poits of clips ad the isert or overlay them ito your productio. The Source Moitor ca also display audio waveforms of audio clips. (To display the audio waveform, set the Take Audio/Video butto to audio or double-click uliked audio. See Chapter 7 for more details.) Program Moitor: The Program Moitor displays your video program: the clips, graphics, effects, ad trasitios that you have assembled i a video sequece i the Timelie widow. You ca also use the Lift ad Extract buttos i the Program Moitor to remove footage. To play a sequece i the Program Moitor, you ca either click the widow s Play butto or press the Spacebar. Trim Moitor: The Trim Moitor allows you to precisely fie-tue edits. You ca access the Trim Moitor from the Program Moitor, either by clickig Trim i the Program Moitor pael meu or by clickig the Trim butto. I the Trim pael, the left ad right sides of a edit are show o either side of the widow. To edit, you ca click ad drag betwee the two moitor views of the edit to add or subtract frames from either side of the edit (see Figure 1.4). You ca also click ad drag i the left or right moitor to edit oly the left or right side of the edit. You ca also choose to edit oe frame or five frames at a time by simply clickig a butto. Usig the Trim Moitor is covered i Chapter 12. Referece Moitor: I may respects, the Referece Moitor is a secod Program Moitor. May Premiere Pro editors use it whe makig color ad toal adjustmets because it allows them to view video scopes (which display hue ad saturatio levels) i the Referece Moitor while simultaeously viewig the actual footage i the Program Moitor. The Referece Moitor ca be gaged, or set to play i syc, with the Program Moitor, or it ca be ugaged. Usig the Referece Moitor is discussed i Chapter 17. Multi-Camera Moitor: The Multi-Camera Moitor allows you to view four differet clips simultaeously i oe moitor. As footage plays i the moitor, you ca use the mouse or keyboard to select a scee to isert ito your program sequece. The Multi- Camera Moitor is most helpful whe editig evet footage shot simultaeously from differet cameras. See Chapter 12 to lear more about usig the Multi-Camera Moitor. 36

The roud, kob-like cotrols eable you to pa or balace audio. You ca chage the settigs by clickig ad draggig the kob ico. The buttos below the balace cotrols let you play all tracks, select the tracks that you wat to hear, or select the tracks that you wat to mute. The familiar cotrols at the bottom of the Audio Mixer widow eable you to start ad stop recordig while the audio rus. Chapter 4 covers how to record audio usig the Audio Mixer. 11 Premiere Pro Basics 1 The Effects pael The Effects pael allows you to quickly apply a variety of useful audio effects, video effects, ad trasitios. For example, the Video Effects bi (folder) icludes effects that correct color, chage a image s cotrast, ad distort ad blur images. As show i Figure 1.6, the effects are orgaized ito bis. For example, the Distort bi cotais effects that distort clips by bedig or pichig them. Applyig a effect is simple: Just click ad drag the effect over a clip i the Timelie. You ca the edit the effect usig cotrols i the Effect Cotrols pael. TIP The Effects pael allows you to create your ow bis ad move effects ito them so that you ca quickly access the effects you wat to use i each project. Premiere Pro s Video Trasitios bi, which also appears i the Effects pael, features more tha 70 trasitioal effects. Some trasitios, such as the Dissolve group, ca provide a smooth trasitio from oe video clip to aother. The Effect Cotrols pael The Effect Cotrols pael, show i Figure 1.7, allows you to quickly create ad cotrol audio ad video effects ad trasitios. For example, you ca add a effect to a clip by selectig it i the Effects pael ad the draggig the effect over the clip i the Timelie or directly ito the Effect Cotrols pael. As show i Figure 1.7, the Effect Cotrols pael icludes its ow versio of the Timelie as well as a slider cotrol for zoomig ito the Timelie. By clickig ad draggig the Timelie ad chagig effect settigs, you ca chage effects over time. As you chage settigs, you create keyframes (idicated by diamod icos) i the Effect Cotrols pael ad i the Timelie. If you create multiple effects for oe clip, you ca see the settigs for the differet effects by selectig the clip ad opeig the Effect Cotrols pael. 13 Premiere Pro Basics 1 The Tools pael The tools i Premiere Pro s Tools pael, show i Figure 1.8, are primarily used to edit clips i the Timelie. You ca activate each tool by clickig it i the Tools pael. Here is a brief summary of the tools: The Selectio tool is ofte used for selectig ad movig clips o the Timelie. The Track Select tool selects all items o a track. Pressig Shift while clickig the Track Select tool selects multiple tracks. The Ripple Edit, Rollig Edit, Slip, ad Slide tools, covered i Chapter 12, are used to adjust edits o the Timelie. The Razor tool allows you to cut a clip simply by clickig it. Pressig Shift while clickig the Razor tool cuts footage i multiple tracks. The Rate Stretch tool allows you to chage the speed of a clip by clickig ad draggig a clip edge with the tool. The Pe tool allows you to create keyframes o the Timelie whe adjustig video ad audio effects. Audio effects are covered i Chapter 7. Video effects are covered i Chapter 13. The Had tool eables you to scroll through differet parts of the Timelie without chagig the Zoom level. The Zoom tool provides yet aother meas of zoomig i ad out i the Timelie. With the Zoom tool activated, you ca click to zoom i ad Ctrl/Ô-click to zoom out. 14 Part I Gettig Started with Premiere Pro The History pael Premiere Pro s History pael, show i Figure 1.9, lets you perform virtually ulimited Udo operatios. FIGURE 1.9 The History pael provides virtually ulimited Udo operatios. As you work, the History pael records your productio steps. To retur to a previous versio of your project, just click that history state i the History pael. After you click ad begi workig agai, you rewrite history all past steps followig the state you retured to are removed from the pael as ew oes appear. If you wat to clear all history from the pael, choose Clear i the pael meu (opeed by clickig the right triagle ico). To delete a history state, select it ad the click the Delete butto (trashca ico) i the pael. CAUTION If you click a history state i the History pael to udo a actio ad the begi to work, all steps after the oe you clicked are removed from your project. The Ifo pael The Ifo pael provides importat iformatio about clips ad trasitios, ad eve about gaps i the Timelie. To see the Ifo pael i actio, click a clip, trasitio, or empty gap i the Timelie. The Ifo widow shows the size, duratio, ad startig ad edig poits of the clip or gap, as show i Figure The Ifo pael ca be very useful whe editig because the pael displays startig ad edig poits of the clips as you edit them i the Timelie pael. The Evet pael The Evet pael lists errors that may occur whe usig third-party video ad audio plug-is. Selectig the error message i the Evet pael, ad the clickig Details, provides more iformatio about the specific error. 42

You ca also use the Title Desiger to create aimated title effects. To aid title placemet, the Title Desiger ca display video behid the titles you are creatig. Tools ad other optios for creatig titles ca be opeed oscree from the Title Desiger s meu, or by choosig Widow Title Tools, Title Styles, Title Actios, or Title properties. I Figure 1.11, the Title tools are i the upper-left corer, displayed vertically; the Title Actios are below the Title tools, ad also display vertically. To create a title with the Title Desiger, choose File New Title. If you wish to edit a title that is already o the Timelie, double-click the title ad it opes i the Title Desiger. For example, if you type the word edit ad click Search, a log list of topics related to the word edit appears. Clickig oe of the edit topics brigs you to the Help page for that item. To work efficietly whe searchig, put quotes aroud search phrases. For example, searchig for timecode effect produces oe listig related to the Timecode effect. If you type timecode effect without quotes, the search respods with a log list cotaiig all cotet with the words timecode or effect.
