It is best to complete each step i the Media Ceter setup wizard to be able to use all the features i Media Ceter. The Media Ceter setup wizard may take approximately 10 to 40 miutes to complete. 14 Sychroizig Media to a Portable Media Device Syc to Device i More Programs allows you to automatically trasfer your music, picture, video, ad recorded TV files from the PC to a portable device such as a portable Media Ceter device, a SmartPhoe, a pocket PC, or a mass storage device. Select Help i Media Ceter for more iformatio. 1 Coect your portable media device to the PC. 2 Select Yes whe the message appears askig if you wat to syc cotet to the device. 3 If device is coected, press Start o the remote cotrol. 4 Select More Programs, ad the select Syc to Device. 5 Select the Up arrow or Dow arrow o the scree to move a playlist up or dow i the list. This remote cotrol helps you avigate the Media Ceter widows o your computer just as a TV remote cotrol helps you avigate cable TV optios or cotrol the playback of a movie i a VCR or DVD player. 33 Usig the Televisio Guide I the Televisio Guide, you ca scroll through a list of the curret ad upcomig televisio programs ad chaels available from your televisio service provider. The Guide displays the chael ad etwork, as well as the program title, scheduled time block, ad a brief descriptio of the program. The umber of days displayed depeds o your televisio service provider; most providers display up to 14 days. By selectig a program title, a detailed descriptio of the program appears at the bottom of the widow. The Televisio Guide is ot available i all coutries/ regios. Importat iformatio about the Televisio Guide Televisio Guide data may ot be available i your coutry/regio. You ca still record TV programs without a Guide; see Recordig TV without the Televisio Guide o page 33. If there is o Guide data available whe you try to dowload or search for Guide iformatio, you may receive oe of several error messages. A error ca occur because your PC is ot coected to the Iteret, guide listigs are ot available i your coutry/regio, or your TV sigal provider ad PC locatio settigs are ot supported. Make sure you are coected to the Iteret ad check your TV sigal ad guide settigs i the Settigs meu of Media Ceter. w Make sure the PC has a coectio to the Iteret ad that you have completed the Media Ceter setup wizard before you try to dowload your Televisio Guide or chage the settigs for your Guide. The Guide is dowloaded at a specified time every few days. This optio may ot be supported by all providers. You ca record two programs at the same time if your PC has two TV tuers (select models oly). If a recordig error occurs, the program will ot be recorded uless the coflict is resolved. If you try to schedule a recordig ad aother is already scheduled for the same time, a coflict widow appears ad gives you the optio to record the ew program or record the previously scheduled program. To make sure your program is beig recorded, select My TV, Recorded TV, ad the select Scheduled. The Record ico also appears ext to the program i the Guide while you are recordig. The Record ico disappears whe the recordig is complete. Recordig icos The Record ico appears i the TV Guide ext to the program scheduled to record. The Record Series ico appears i the TV Guide ext to each occurrece of a program i a series that is scheduled to be recorded. The Record Coflict/Error ico appears i the TV Guide ad the taskbar if aother program is scheduled to be recorded at the same time. Record Series meas that you select to record each episode of that program from oe chael. Media Ceter will ot record duplicate episodes. Media Ceter also looks for alterative times to record a episode if a recordig coflict arises. To record a curret or future program or series usig Search: 1 Press the Media Ceter Start butto o the remote cotrol, select My TV, ad the select Search. 2 Select Title, Keyword, or Categories. For Title ad Keyword searches, eter your descriptive search words. Media Ceter starts searchig from the first letter you type ito the text box. For a Categories search, select the category you wat ad press OK. Title search 3 Use the arrow buttos to scroll through the search results to select the program you wat to record, select the program, ad the press OK. 4 Select Record or Record Series i the widow, ad the press OK. Recordig TV tips If your PC has oe TV tuer ad you are watchig live TV durig a scheduled recordig time, you ca watch oly the program beig recorded. If you chage chaels, recordig stops. If you go to aother area i Media Ceter, the TV chael you last selected will be displayed i the iset widow at the bottom of the widow. Some chaels ca be shared by two or more etworks, depedig o the time of day. The Guide may display oly oe etwork s programmig. This may cause recordig optios to be uavailable. You may eed to maually update the Guide before schedulig a recordig. To copy a recorded TV program to DVD to view o a home DVD player, see Copyig a TV program to CD/ DVD usig Media Ceter o page 101. Importat iformatio about My TV ad FM radio I Media Ceter, FM radio shares the use of the sigle tuer card with My TV. I Media Ceter, you are uable to watch or record TV ad liste to FM radio at the same time. Whe Media Ceter is scheduled to start a recordig, a warig appears that says FM radio stops whe the TV recordig starts. If you do ot select Cacel recordig, Media Ceter automatically stops radio ad begis recordig TV. To get the maximum recordig time, chage the recordig quality to Fair istead of the default settig of Best. If your PC model icludes oe TV tuer ad you schedule two recordigs for the same time, a message appears tellig you to resolve the coflict. If you do ot resolve the coflict, Media Ceter automatically makes the selectio just before the program begis recordig. Before the program records, a coflict ico (a red circle with a exclamatio poit) is listed ext to the program i the Guide. Press the Media Ceter Start butto o the remote cotrol, select My TV, Recorded TV, ad the select Scheduled. To eable Media Ceter to resolve recordig coflicts, you ca set up how program recordigs are hadled. Whe you try to record a program ad aother is scheduled at the same time, Media Ceter prompts you to choose a program to record. If two recordigs are i coflict, but oe is scheduled to air at aother time, Media Ceter displays a message with the optio to record a alterate recordig of oe of the programs. Recordig priority rules Media Ceter selects which program to record based o the followig priority rules: 1 A scheduled program that is ot a reru 2 The program that was scheduled first 3 Maual recordigs Ofte, Media Ceter is able to fid a alterative date ad time for recordig oe of the programs so that both programs ca be recorded. If oe recordig partially overlaps aother, Media Ceter records to the ed of the first ad the begis recordig the secod. After you resolve a recordig coflict, the coflict ico cotiues to appear for the program that is ot scheduled to record so you ca retur to the coflict ad reverse it, if eeded. If you are watchig TV while recordig a program, you ca watch oly the chael beig recorded. If a recordig is scheduled to begi ad you are watchig a differet chael, a message appears givig you the choice to chage the chael to begi the recordig. If o choice is made, the chael chages automatically. 49 Settig Captio Display (Select models oly) If you set Media Ceter to display captios while i widow mode (ot full-scree mode), the widow or the captio text may flash as the text scrolls i the widow. To fix this problem, chage the display to full-scree mode or tur off the captio display optio. To tur off the captio display optio: 1 Press the Media Ceter Start butto o the remote cotrol. 2 Select Settigs, TV, ad the select Audio. 3 Click (+) or ( ) ext to the curret Captio display settig to chage it. 50 About Teletext Teletext is additioal iformatio that is broadcast withi a TV sigal i some coutries/regios. You ca avigate the Teletext mai page ad subpages to fid iformatio such as the weather, sports scores, or commuity evets. You ca tur o subtitles i a specific laguage for a program you are watchig. Whe a TV show is recorded, the Teletext subtitles are stored with the recordig so you ca view the subtitles whe you play the recordig later. Teletext may ot be available for all the chaels you receive. The Teletext butto will oly display o the iformatio bar if Teletext is available for that chael. If you would like more iformatio about which chaels have Teletext available, cotact your TV service provider. Safeguardig Recorded TV Programs Most televisio broadcasters do ot ecrypt programs, so a recordig ca be played o ay Media Ceter PC. A recordig of a broadcasterecrypted TV program, though, ca be played oly o the PC that recorded it. Whe you record TV programs usig Media Ceter, the TV program broadcaster may have a ecryptio code that Microsoft icludes as a special code i the recorded files. This code is keyed to your PC ad is required to play broadcasterecrypted TV programs previously recorded to your hard disk drive, copied to DVD, or copied to other media. Whe you perform a system recovery or replace the hard disk drive i your PC, you lose the special code. You ca safeguard your capability to play recorded TV programs by makig a backup CD ad usig it as described i the procedures provided here. Make the backup CD ow, before you eed it, so that you ca use the CD after you perform a system recovery or replace the hard disk drive i your PC. If you do ot have the backup CD after you perform a system recovery or replace the hard disk drive, you will ot be able to play ay previously recorded TV programs that are broadcaster-ecrypted. The procedures that follow describe how to prepare your PC, make the backup files you eed, copy the file to CD, ad use the backup CD to restore the files to your PC after a system recovery. To safeguard your recorded TV programs you eed to: Prepare the code key files. Make a backup CD. Perform a system recovery, if ecessary. Use the code key backup CD after a system recovery. Importat iformatio about recorded TV programs Whe you replace the hard disk drive, you lose ay files or software that you created, saved, or istalled o the PC. You also lose a special code that Microsoft icludes i the files of the recorded TV programs. You caot set up the tuers to differet TV sigal sources, such as satellite ad atea. Both TV tuers must be coected to the same sigal source. For example, you must use a atea, cable, two cable boxes, or two satellite set-top boxes for both tuer iputs. With two TV tuers, your Media Ceter PC ca record two programs at the same time. The PC requires a certai amout of space to ru your Widows XP operatig system, ru software programs, ad store data files. If your hard disk drive becomes full, it may affect the PC speed ad performace. You may eed to free up storage space to record more programs or to optimize the performace of your PC. There are several thigs you ca do to optimize ad icrease your available hard disk drive space. The size of your PC hard disk drive depeds o your model. The PC comes with preloaded software programs ad a backup partitio withi the hard disk drive that takes up a certai amout of space o the hard disk drive. The coutry/regio umber is usually placed over a world globe prited o the DVD packagig ad disc. DVDs without coutry/regio codes will play o ay player or drive i ay coutry/regio. WiDVD is ot pre-set to a particular coutry/ regio: the coutry/regio code of the first DVD movie you play determies your DVD coutry/ regio. For example, if you play a DVD with a coutry/ regio 1 code, WiDVD sets the curret coutry/ regio of your DVD player to 1. If you later play a DVD that is coded for a differet coutry/regio, WiDVD asks if you wat to set this as the curret coutry/regio.
