3 ii Perormance Notes The lyrics are in modern Hebrew (written in International Phonetic Alhabet IPA) No.1 (Miriam) and No. (Hannah) should be ended with an 'attaca', leading to the ollowing movements without stoing. No. (Sarah): the underlined notes at the beginning o this movement, and in similar assages that ollow reer to bow length. Follow recisely the indicated bow lengths. Duration: arox. 20 minutes Program Notes Seven biblical emale rohetesses: Miriam, Hulda, Esther, Avigail, Sarah, Hannah, and Deborah, are ortrayed in songs by the young Israeli comoser Moshe Shulman. Insiration or the iece emerged through conversation with Dr. Anne Harley, ounder and director o Voices o the Pearl, about setting text by and about emale esoterics rom world traditions throughout history to reclaim their lost voices and the tradition o emale sirituality. eore the sirits o these women could be brought to lie through music, oet uli Varshavsky was invited to develo his most relective text about these amous yet inaccessible women. Where inormation about the women was limited, uli illed in with intuition and imagination. The result o this relection: seven ine oems, rom which the comoser extracted the most imortant lines to set music to. The use o both biblical and modern Hebrew language creates a more authentic character in the vocalist and overall ambience o this iece. In addition to usage o the Hebrew language, the music incororates many ewish elements as well. The augmented second, an interval ound in modes and melodies o Eastern Euroean ewish Klezmer music, can be ound throughout the iece. Another imortant element in the iece is the use o the mordent, a raid alternation o a note with the note immediately below or above it in the scale. This ornamentation is common in klezmer instrumental music and imitates cantorial singing. Similarly to cantors that were exected to adhere to a higher level o artistry as well as emotional intensity, the singer in Seven Prohetesses is also exected to treat the texts with greater reedom and exressivity with the use o more elaborate virtuosic dislay, occasionally absorbing inluences rom contemorary music.
