I Debussy and his Children s Corner Achille-Claude Debussy as born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France in August o 1862 As early as nine years old, Debussy shoed romise on the iano, and at ten he entered the Paris Conservatory here he studied iano and comosition 1 His music relects originality in its structure and harmony hich bridges the Romantic era o Richard Wagner and Frederic Choin to the school o comosition that Debussy athered, Imressionism 2 Though Debussy himsel disliked the term, Imressionism relays the styles o contemorary French art and culture directly to the music o his time Elements o Imressionist music include evoking the emotions and senses, creating ne colors and timbres, utilizing unusual instrumentation, creating melodies and harmonies that are very non-traditional, and breaking aay rom standard harmonic rogressions 3 In his childhood, Debussy aced hardshi rom living in the overty-stricken suburbs o Paris, hich arguably inluenced his comositions later in lie His music, hoever, is most inluenced by his trials and ailures ith omen His irst love, Blanche Vasnier, the beautiul ie o an architect, insired his early orks Later this insiration came rom other lovers including mistress Gabrielle Duont and irst ie Rosalie Texier Debussy s greatest musical insiration, hoever, as the notable Romantic comoser Richard Wagner Wagner encouraged artists and other comosers to reveal their inner emotions and dreams and realize these through their art Debussy rote one o 1 Lockseiser, E 2 Naxos 3 Gasser, N Lockseiser, E 1
his greatest masterieces, Prelude to Aternoon o a Faun, in this sirit and continued to indulge the idea throughout his later years 5 In 1905, Debussy s irst and only child, Claude-Emma Chouchou, as born to mistress Emma Bardac He then divorced Rosalie Texier to marry Emma Bardac When Chouchou as three years old, Debussy rote Children s Corner, dedicating in his original score, To my dear little Chou-Chou ith her ather s tender aologies or hat is to ollo 6 Debussy as incredibly ond o Chouchou He rote each o the movements to Children s Corner in the essence o one o her toys, dolls or other asect o her childhood Movement I: Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum is a lively and technical movement ritten satirically in the style o Muzio Clementi s collection o instructional iano ieces, Gradus ad Parnassum 7 Debussy s title resents Clementi as the doctor or technical roblems in iano study It as also meant to be layed as a sort o technical exercise, ith extreme clarity and evenness o notes 8 This relects Chouchou s engagement in iano lessons, as she as knon to lay rather ell as a child The style o Movement II, Jimbo s Lullaby, contrasts ith Movement I It is slo, lo in range, and ull o loing and mysterious melodies The title reresents a uroseul misselling o the amous elehant, Jumbo, ho became the orld s irst internationally amous circus animal Folloing the oularity o Jumbo, several trinkets, clothing items, souvenirs, books, and toys ere modeled ater the elehant in a craze 5 Lockseiser, E 6 Cocke, B 7 Wilson, S 8 Cocke, B 2
called Jumbomania 9 Chouchou oned a stued Jumbo doll, and had ossibly enjoyed the story o the giant creature, thereore insiring the second movement o Children s Corner Movement III: Serenade or the Doll is a quicker, three-our time movement that brings to lie the stillness o Chouchou s avorite orcelain doll 10 There is some controversy over the title, though It as originally ublished Serenade or the Doll in the table o contents, but above the score, Serenade o the Doll A literal translation rom French to English, hoever, ould be Serenade to the Doll, hich is hat it as titled hen Debussy ublished it searately in I am using the English title o the original score, and because I believe that Debussy s intentions are or the Doll to be serenaded, I think this title its the iece the best Movement IV: The Sno is Dancing is thought to be the most challenging by researchers and ianists or both emotional and technical considerations 12 It deicts the gray inter s snoall rom the eyes o a child (Chouchou) dismally looking out the indo 13 The Sno is Dancing also lays on Debussy s ideas o dreams and the onder o nature, evident in the melodies ritten throughout the movement Movement V: The Little Sheherd is the shortest o the six movements, but also the most emotionally demanding The sheherd is the assumed doll or toy o Chouchou s reresented in this movement, hoever Debussy never revealed hat the sheherd truly as Some say it is ossibly a reerence to the design on the allaer in Chouchou s 9 Wilson, S 10 Cocke, B 11 Chen, Lin-Yu 12 Cocke, B 13 Chen, Lin-Yu 3
bedroom 1 hereas others say the title reers to a icture, or erhas a cardboard cutout or a nativity scene 15 Movement VI: Golliog s Cakealk is the inal and most oular movement This movement is very layul in nature and deicts the historical doll, the golliog, hich Debussy s daughter oned 16 Florence Kate Uton ublished a children s book in 1895 ith one character described as being a horrid sight, the blackest gnome, and she named it the Golliog 17 The golliog became very oular, characterized by its black ace, ide eyes, unruly hair, red ants, and a blue coat The only toy to surass it in oularity at the turn o the 20 th century as the Teddy Bear 18 It is knon or its racial controversy, as ell, being commonly reerenced in books and stories ith much discrimination against blacks The term golliog and even derivatives o the ord are vieed as racial slurs today Next, a Cakealk as a dance created by slaves in America beore the Civil War It as originally called the rize alk because the inners received a cake at its conclusion 19 Debussy s inluence o the Arican American culture o his time shos u greatly in the title, but also in the rhythmic atterns and ragtime ideas included in the music as ell The middle section o this movement mocks the very comoser ho inluenced Debussy most, Richard Wagner, by inserting the theme to Wagner s amous Tristan und Isolde ith a short, almost laughing musical idea interruting its reetitions 20 1 Chen, Lin-Yu 15 Cocke, B 16 Chen, Lin-Yu 17 Pilgrim, D 18 Ghandi, L 19 Pilgrim, D 20 Cocke, B
II Interest and Involvement My interest in this iece began ith my interest in Debussy himsel As a child, I took iano lessons and as very amiliar ith Debussy s music, though it as tyically too advanced or my skill level on the iano I as determined, hoever, to learn his masteriece Clair de Lune, a beautiul solo iano iece o hich I have alays been very ond It is a magical and emotional iece ith comlex rhythmic, melodic, and technical asects, but is really characterized by its dramatic harmonies, tyical o Debussy s comositions and original harmonizing strategies Once I urchased this sheet music, I sent hours racticing and inally elt coortable laying it, though never or an audience Thus began my love or Debussy I have since been very interested in Debussy s other orks, articularly in college, studying La cathédral engloutie and Prelude to the Aternoon o a Faun He is one o my avorite comosers, i not my avorite comoser This caused me to seek a ork o Debussy s that might ork ell in an arrangement or clarinet choir I have layed the clarinet or ten years and study Music Education ith clarinet as my rimary instrument, so I am very amiliar ith the range, tendencies, caabilities, and characteristics o the instrument I have also articiated in clarinet choirs at the high school level as ell as at a symosium at the University o Tennessee, Knoxville and or our years at MTSU Though clarinet is my rimary ocus in the arrangement, I have also chosen to incororate ercussion instruments I have erormed in several ercussion ensembles 5
and also taught a ercussion ensemble at the high school level This, and my knoledge gained rom the Percussion Techniques and Orchestration and Arranging courses at MTSU insired me to incororate ercussion into my arrangement I am most coortable and knoledgeable about clarinet and ercussion instruments o all the instruments I have studied over the course o my education, and I also believe the to grous combine beautiully i they are balanced to each other I ket this idea in mind as I develoed my arrangement Combining my love or Debussy s music and my knoledge o the instrumentation I anted to utilize, I continued to exlore Debussy s music until I arrived at the Children s Corner suite I as already amiliar ith the inal movement, Golliog s Cakealk, but had not heard or studied the other ive movements So, I listened to them in order, several times, and rom several dierent recordings beore deciding this as the iece I ould choose I kne ater just a e days that this iece ould ork quite ell 6
III Methodology I started the rocess o arranging Children s Corner by doing very basic research to see i I needed to obtain any coyrights, hich I quickly discovered that I did not Children s Corner is in the ublic domain, so I began intense listening and reared to arrange it To say that I had a standard or deined methodology behind arranging ould not be totally accurate, hoever I develoed my on method, lexible enough to it both my and my advisor s schedules The rocess in hich I created Children s Corner or Clarinet Choir and Percussion began ith listening and score analysis I used Sotiy and YouTube to search or dierent versions and existing arrangements o the suite, and I listened to them daily Around May I designed a schedule o movements, and I gave mysel about a month to create each movement in this order: II, VI, III, IV, V and I Project advisor Dr Osterield and I develoed this order by glancing over the iano score and thinking about hich might be easiest or most straight orard and starting those irst I became very amiliar ith the second movement by listening and studying the score beore riting anything don Once I elt ready, I started marking my score ith notes and ideas like eature bass clarinet here and ercussion ostinato I used Sibelius 7, a ell knon and idely used music notation sotare, to start inutting my ideas onto a score Ater a irst drat o the movement as comlete, I sent a PDF o that score to Dr Osterield ho then looked it over, made suggestions, and aroved that I start another movement 7
I coied this rocess or the remaining movements as ell, constantly editing each drat as ne ideas or errors aeared One thing I learned during this rocess is that there ill alays be room or imrovement There ill alays be some small error, sacing issue, dynamic disagreement, or other roblem Dr Osterield testiied to this in one o our many meetings by encouraging me that even the masterieces have minute errors I comleted each movement and corrected necessary edits by Setember, hen it as time to begin rehearsals Once the semester began, I consulted Dr Waldecker, the MTSU Clarinet Proessor, and he alloed me to direct the Clarinet Choir ensemble Each Wednesday I created a very inormal schedule or rehearsal and handed out arts to my ork in rogress It as during one o these rehearsals that Dr Waldecker suggested that I conduct my arrangement at the erormance I had reviously taken to semesters o conducting at MTSU, so I as ell-reared to accet this suggestion One o my only challenges as scheduling rehearsals to incororate ercussion, because the Clarinet Choir rehearses at the same time as MTSU Percussion Ensemble Thus, most o the rehearsals ere or clarinets only I scheduled three rehearsals that included ercussion, hich elt like limited time Ideally, e could have racticed together at each rehearsal, but timing as diicult The scheduling o events, rehearsals, and gathering all o the members o the clarinet choir and ercussionists as diicult, but the erormance as extremely successul and I m roud o the ork e have done 8
