1 Comparison charts The charts on pages 17 through 20 show how each school compares to averages at the same grade across all schools in the report. All data from grades 3 5 (elementary and K 8 schools) were used to calculate the district 3 5 averages; all data for grades 6 8 (K 8, middle, and 6 12 schools) were used to calculate the 6 8 averages; all data for grades 9 12 (6 12 and high schools) were used to calculate averages for All information is from the 14 school year unless noted. Schools are grouped by type: neighborhood, magnet, and charter. s and charter schools are color-coded so readers can compare schools of different types. Although this component of the report is partially based on averages, readers should not conclude that we endorse average achievement. The denominator includes students who attend private, parochial, and charter schools, as well as students who attend other district schools. Whole school magnets are reported as n/a. Enrollment gain/loss Definition: The percentage of change in enrollment from the school year to the 14 school year. Percentages were calculated by dividing the gain or loss in enrollment by the enrollment number. Source: PPS and charter schools. Math achievement gap, Reading achievement gap Definition: We define the achievement gap as the difference between black achievement at the school and white achievement at the district level. Schools with smaller than average gaps are considered to be above the district average; schools with larger than average gaps are considered to be below. Schools where black students performed above the level of white students in the district are noted with an asterisk. n/a Definition: Not applicable or not available (some information was unavailable because there were too few students in a subgroup to report). Reading Value Added, Math Value Added Definition: A school s value-added measures (VAM) scores estimate the school s contribution to student academic growth, and compare it to that of other schools in the state. Scores are calculated using a formula based on students current and prior performance on Reading and Math assessments. School VAM scores are on a scale from 1 to 99, where 50 is the state average.
