1 Bosch Institute Advanced Microscopy Facility Workshops Summer/Autumn 2017 Presented by Dr Louise Cole, Advanced Microscopy Facility, Bosch Institute, School of Medical Sciences, The University of Sydney.
2 Microscope Training If you are interested in learning how to use light and fluorescence microscopes, the Bosch Institute Advanced Microscopy Facility (AMF) can offer expert training and support on a range of light and fluorescence microscopes and other specialized imaging methods, including image analysis and processing methods. Summary of Summer/Autumn Workshops 2017 ZEISS transmitted light, fluorescence and deconvolution Microscope ZEISS AxioScan Slide-Scanning Microscope, Bright-field and Fluorescence Olympus MBF/Stereo Investigator TL Microscope Leica SPEII confocal Microscope ZEISS LSM 510 Meta confocal Microscope Light-sheet/Ultramicroscope microscope PALM Microbeam DuoFlex Combi Laser Microdissection Microscope LaVision TriM Scope II multiphoton microscope Cannot find the training workshop you need? For a full list of microscopes, their specifications and related software available at the Bosch AMF please go to: sydney.edu.au/medicine/bosch/facilities/ advanced-microscopy. Training can be offered on one-on-one basis by arrangement with the Microscopy Officer. Cost: In most cases, training workshops are FREE to current registered users of the Bosch Institute Advanced Microscopy Facility. How to register as a user at the Bosch Institute Advanced Microscopy Facility? Current registration forms can be downloaded from the Bosch AMF website: sydney.edu.au/medicine/bosch/facilities/advanced-microscopy/user-support. Fees are listed on this form. If you require training and need to use a number of microscopes at the Bosch AMF, then registering to the AMF is costeffective. Since registration costs cover all access to microscopes and related software and both training and workshops fees. No additional hourly usage fees are charged. Please return completed forms to the Microscopy Officer. All AMF users must be trained by AMF staff on the equipment prior to use. Individual training and workshop fees for non-registered AMF users can be provided on request from the Microscopy Officer.
3 Zeiss transmitted light, fluorescence and deconvolution microscopy workshop This microscope is our most popular wide-field fluorescence microscope. In this workshop you will learn how to set-up for transmitted light, wide-field fluorescence and deconvolution microscopy. Includes ZEN Blue software training. Weds Mar 15 th 10 am 12 noon or 2-4 pm, Fri Mar 17 th 10 am 12 noon or 2-4 pm. Rm S443, Anderson Stuart Building, F13. Maximum attendees per session, 5. ZEISS AxioScan slide-scanning microscope This microscope has both bright-field and fluorescence imaging capabilities and can create virtual images of whole slides or defined regions of interest. It can hold up to 100 slides at one time and allows high through-put slide-scanning so that you can scan your slides overnight! In this workshop you will learn how to use this microscope independently. Bright-field mode only. Weds Mar 22 nd 10 am 12 noon or 2-4 pm. Fri Mar 24 th 10 am 12 noon or 2-4 pm. Fluorescence mode only: Weds Mar 29 th 10 am 12 noon or 2-4 pm. Fri Mar 31 st 10 am 12 noon or 2-4 pm. Rm N127, Anderson Stuart Building, F13. Maximum attendees per session, 4. Olympus MBF/Stereo Investigator TL Microscope This microscope has a motorised xyz-stage and MBF Stereo Investigator software for design based Stereology, Image Analysis, and 2D Anatomical Mapping. In this workshop, you will learn how to use the Virtual Slice module that automatically creates a montage by collecting a series of contiguous images from a tissue specimen. This software aligns, stitches and blends images into a seamless montage. This microscope is quick and easy to use, is useful for routine bright-field imaging and enables fast navigation to any region of the slide. Weds April 5 th 10 am 12 noon or 2-4 pm. Rm N421, Anderson Stuart Building, F13.tMax. attendees per session, 3. Leica SPEII confocal microscope workshop Upright microscope suitable for imaging fixed and slide-mounted specimens. Short workshop on confocal imaging includes multicolour and z-stack image acquisition. This workshop is popular with beginners to confocal microscopy. Fri Apr 7 th 10 am 12 noon or 2-4 pm. Rm S443, Anderson Stuart Building, F13. Max. attendees per session, 5.
4 ZEISS LSM 510 Meta confocal microscope workshop Short workshop on confocal imaging includes single-, multitrack and z-stack image acquisition. Inverted microscope supports imaging of slide-mounted specimens and single or multi-well culture dishes. This course and microscope is recommended for users with some previous knowledge of fluorescence and/or confocal microscopy. Tues Apr 11 th 10 am 12 noon or 2 4 pm. Weds Apr 12 th 10 am 12 noon or 2 4 pm. Rm S443, Anderson Stuart Building, F13. Max. attendees per session, 5. Light-sheet microscopy workshop Learn how to use the LaVision BioTec Ultra-microscope II. This microscope generates six focused light sheets to excite samples from the side only and thereby reduce bleaching and photo-toxicity. The emitted fluorescence light is detected perpendicular to the illumination plane. Moving the sample through the light-sheet generates a 3D image stack. The open set-up allows the analysis of cleared samples in any clearing solution or in vivo data acquisition of samples in aqueous media. Perfect for imaging larger cleared samples quickly. Weds Apr 19 th 10 am 12 noon or 2 4 pm. Fri Apr 21 st 10 am 12 noon or 2 4 pm. Rm S448, Anderson Stuart Building, F13. Max. attendees per session, 6. PALM Microbeam DuoFlex Combi Laser Microdissection Microscope workshop Do you want to combine your microscopy with molecular biology tools? This workshop shows you how to laser microdissect selected areas of cells or tissue samples. Dissected samples are catapulted against gravity into collection caps, are contamination-free and ready for further downstream molecular analyses of RNA, DNA and/or protein. Weds Apr 26 th or Fri Apr 28 th 10 am 12 noon. Rm N135, Anderson Stuart Building, F13. Max. attendees per session, 6. La Vision TriM Scope II Multiphoton Microscope Rm S445, Anderson Stuart Building F13. Friday May 5 th One-Day Meeting Come and learn how to use the La Vision TriM Scope II multiphoton microscope. This one-day meeting will include seminars about multiphoton microscopy, deep tissue in vivo imaging applications and hands-on sessions on the microscope. For more details, please cantact Louise Cole (louise.cole@bosch.org.au) or David Liu (d.liu@centenary.org.au).
