2 Page 2 Director s message This issue of the Dynaflash will include the BCA National in July and the Upstill potluck meeting in August. Buick Club of America National July 5-8 the BCA held our national meet in Brookfield WI. Many Hawkeye members were able to attend; if you did not attend you missed a good event. I thought the meet went fairly well without too many hiccups, thanks to Kris Syrdal and Bob Starzyk s planning and adjustments. I counted 19 Hawkeye members and wives in attendance. According to the meet brochure 415 people registered, 275 of those brought cars to the event, and another 40 vendors were registered. I thought there were more cars and vendors than recent BCA events, which is great. The Hawkeye Chapter was asked to take on the task of operating the photo lane this year. John and Jo McCarthy were the leaders; they were assisted by Gregory and Diane Nelson, Brenda Gorman, and Derek Thille, everyone did a great job. If you know John, just taking a picture is never enough, he has genuine interest in all Buicks. When the photo line was not active John was seen out recruiting cars. John and Jo also put the slideshow together that was playing during the Awards Banquet, well done. Along with looking at cars and judging cars and talking Buicks you could have attended the BCA meeting or the Heartland Regional meeting. The BCA meeting resulted in Hawkeye member Alan Oldfield being elected President of the BCA. Congratulations to Alan, I m sure he will do a great job. Let s make sure we as a chapter offer our support if needed. If I m not mistaken Alan is the third Hawkeye member to serve as President, not bad for a smaller chapter. The Heartland Regional meeting required a new Regional Director be elected, our own John McCarthy was elected. John is a Hawkeye member and a Gopher State member. Again please offer your congratulations and support to John. A new member of the Heartland Region was voted on and approved. The new member is will be known as Chiwaukee, they will be a non-financial participant. Bill Gorman made a pitch for our 2018 Heartland Regional to be held in Cedar Rapids. Registration forms were handed out and volunteers requested. The 2018 BCA National meet will be held in Denver, CO June The 2019 BCA National meet will be held in Oklahoma City, OK. The 2019 Heartland Regional will be held by the Minnesota Fireball Chapter. Gene and Betty Upstill Potluck On August 12 th Gene and Betty Upstill hosted the Hawkeye Chapter and the Cadillac Club at their farm. This event was attended by 24 Hawkeye members and wives. Everyone was asked to bring a salad or dessert, so you know there was some great food, Gene and Betty supplied the meat. Special thanks to Gene and Betty for allowing us to gather at their home.

3 Page 3 Director s message continued As in years past, we were able to inspect Gene s collection of Buicks and Studebakers. The newest one was the 1949 Riviera; it won a Silver award at the BCA in July. John Hemmingway brought a 320 CI engine on a trailer; it was great to see that engine run, awesome Heartland Regional hosted by the Hawkeye Chapter Hotel registration is now open for the 2018 Heartland Regional July next year. Event registration is also open. If you need a registration form you can find one with this issue or the Hawkeye Chapter web site, We are planning 400 point judging, or display only and two cruises to see the country side. Volunteers will be needed in following areas: Judging of cars Judging Administration Photo Lane area Setting up show field Tearing down show field Parking trailers Monitoring swap meet inside and outside Help with hospitality area Help Joy Oldfield with the banquet Event registration area, hand out packets to attendees Assist with cruises; we need leader and trailing car to assist. There may be other positions identified later, don t wait till the last moment to volunteer. Please contact Bill Gorman to get your name on the list, or bbgorman35@gmail.com Future events: September TBA, October TBA November 11 th Holiday dinner and meeting Where: Fairview Lodge, Story City Iowa Time: 11:00 2:00 estimate, Dinner about noon Cost: The club is paying ½ of each meal, estimate $6.00 per person Directions: I-35 get off at the Story City exit. Go west on E15, which is Broad St, continue about a mile turn right onto Park Ave. The lodge is on the east side of the school. Agenda: Discuss 2018 Heartland Regional, Nominate and vote for Director, Assistant Director, and Treasurer. Encourage payment of 2018 club dues. We also are looking for a new person to be in charge of Communications. This person will send s and mail information to the membership. Ellen McDonald has told me she is giving up these duties after the November meeting. Bill

5 Page 5 A very busy show field with a lot of polishing and cleaning going on. Note on the upper left the lot for trailer parking. It was full to over flowing. Saw a sign in a car on the show field that said I drove this car to a trailer show. During the show there were three 1900 Buicks, such as the one pictured on the left, that were giving rides to the people on the field. Not sure who was having more fun.

12 Page 12 While at the 2017 BCA National I was cooling off in the hospitality room. They have a number of older Buick publications around for us to read during lulls in the conversation. I grabbed June 2006 Riviera Owners Association magazine and found a familiar name and car inside. There was an article about Hawkeye members Pentico s Riviera. Knowing many of you do not get to read the Riviera magazine, I thought it would be a good idea to include it in our newsletter. Jim We had been looking to add another Riviera to our collection and had been hoping to find a Silver Arrow. It wasn't meant to be, because every Silver Arrow that came up for sale was not the "ONE" for us. The list goes on and on as to the reasons for not finding the car of our dreams: too many miles, too far away, too expensive, too many flaws. Maybe someday. Sigh. February 2005, there was a posting from Sean to the Riv List about a 1999 Riviera that they had just taken as a trade at Carriage Motors. It was bought there and serviced there, only driven in nice weather, 83,000 miles, and the price seemed to be right. The mileage was a little higher than we would have liked, and there were several potential buyers already on a "waiting list" Someone had given a credit card number to hold it, but offered less than Carriage Motors was willing to take. There were also several other prospective owners waiting in the wings. We weren't sure whether we wanted to add our name to the list. The more we thought about it, the more we thought that it might be a good investment are good daily driver, at least for a while (until that Silver Arrow comes along). After all it was a Riviera. We mulled it over, listed pros and cons, decided since it wasn't a Silver Arrow we weren't really interested, but added our name to the waiting list anyway. We were amazed when Sean called several days later and said that we were next in line and next move was ours. We weren't BRONZE ARROW by Sherry Pentico going to have a Silver Arrow, but there didn't seem to be anything wrong with a "Bronze Arrow. Dark Bronze Metallic (color code #76) with Taupe Interior (#564) close enough to me, at least until that Silver Arrow comes along. After all the paperwork was done over the phone, the only problem was how to get that baby home. I had just had a total hip replacement 8 days before buying a car in another state and certainly didn t think I wanted to go for a three plus hour ride and then try to drive a car back home another three hours. We asked Sean if there was any way it could be delivered or stored until I was up to driving and got medical clearance to do so. Well, things worked out! Sean said he could deliver it. WOW! I was really excited about buying a "new" Riviera but disappointed that I wasn't going to be able to drive it right away. We worked out delivery details with Sean, and in early March, had our newest Riv delivered to our front door. It was dark when Sean & Lori arrived with the Riv loaded on a trailer, so it was hard to get a true look under the garage lights. But the next day we had a sunny 75 degrees, gave her a good looking over and took her for her maiden cruise. Unfortunately, I had to ride shotgun. We had a very nice visit with Sean and Lori while we ate a picnic-style late supper. Soon they were on the road again in their pickup truck pulling the empty trailer with them. While we ate and talked Rivieras, we discussed a name for the delivery vehicle and decided that the R. O. A. C. H. Coach seemed to fit. (You know...riviera Owner's Association Car Hauler!) I know it must have been a very late night for Sean & Lori by the time they arrived at their home, but they brightened my day by going out of their way and delivering my new Bronze Arrow Riv.
