SATURDAY NOVEMBER 8, 2014 Our Buick Club will be having their Holiday Party (celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas) on Saturday November 8,2014. Once again we will be having it in Story City; HOWEVER, we will be at a different location. We will meet at the Fairview Lodge which is within walking distance (or just beside) and northwest of the Carrousel which is northwest of the baseball field on the north side of the main street as you come into town from the east off of We will have a delicious meal. Cost $12. We will gather around 10:30 to 11:00 and eat at NOON. If you want to participate in the $5-10 gift exchange please bring a wrapped gift so marked for man or woman. Questions or concerns??? Page 2 Director s Message On July 12th the Hawkeye Buick Club members and friends were the guests of Gene and Betty Upstill.

As always, Gene's collection of Buicks, Studebakers and tractors was ready to be inspected and admired.

This year we were treated to the very rare (I love that phrase) Studamino, as Gene calls it. All attendees were asked to bring a salad, side dish, or dessert.

Items discussed were;. Attendees of the BCA Nationals, John and Jo McCarthy, and Alan and Joy Oldfield.

. Holiday Banquet will be in Story City again most probable date Nov 8th Details will follow.

Introduction of potential new members, Ron Meyers, Paul Meyers, Don and Pat Nokes.. As of this date,potential meeting in September and October are unplanned.

As always Gene and Betty are excellent hosts and make everyone feel welcome. I counted 38 attendees, and 12 Buicks driven. As always, Gene's collection of Buicks, Studebakers and tractors was ready to be inspected and admired. It is always interesting to see if anything new has found its way to the Upstill Farm. This year we were treated to the very rare (I love that phrase) Studamino, as Gene calls it. All attendees were asked to bring a salad, side dish, or dessert. The Upstill's supplied the meat and buns. As usual the food and conversations were excellent. A short meeting was held after everyone was able to eat. Items discussed were;. 3 Page 3 July 12, 2014 the Hawkeye chapter gathered at the home of Gene and Betty Upstill for the annual pot luck picnic. While there was a forecast of rain, the day remained sunny and dry. There was a beautiful selection of Buicks on display in addition to Gene and Betty s own collection including Buicks, Studebakers, tractors and a bunch of memorabilia. Good food, good company. 6 Page BCA National, by Jim Jaeger We jumped into the 1999 Riviera Silver Arrow and headed out for the 1700 mile trip to Oregon. With the exception of a strange problem getting a hotel room with working toilet, the trip out went well. Including the return trip for wild life, we saw one deer watching traffic, and one moose in 3400 miles. Beautiful country for a tour. Hawkeye Chapter was a major force in the 2014 BCA judging. When I attend a BCA National I generally work in the judging administration area. While I would enjoy being on the field judging, I find it much better to be in the air-conditioned facility where they provide lunch and beverages and we still get a judge s cap and pin. We in administration are the unsung heros of the glamorous judging activity. This year at the national in Portland as I took account of the hard working group, I noticed the majority of the group was from the Hawkeye chapter. Heading the group was Joy Oldfield. Doing the number crunching was JoEllen McCarthy, your editor and my lovely wife Mary comprised 50% of the staff. We worked as a well oiled machine under Joy s direction. JoEllen s husband was one of the judges, along with Allan Oldfield who was the BCA Head Judge, serving his last term in this capacity as he has won election to the BCA Board of Directors and will also be in charge of judge s training. Congratulations Allan, on your election.. A long way from home. Off to Portland with map at the ready. Left is Mary Jaeger, Center is me missing, right Is JoEllen McCarthy and in the back is Joy Oldfield. My wife and her daughter were on the field getting our cars ready for judging, her daughter also has a Silver Arrow, when I looked up and wandering past was Greg Nelson. He must have taken a wrong turn at Webster. Not the way you want to leave the show field the day before judging. The Buick dealer in Portland jumped on the wagon s problem and he made it back for judging. Car was purchased in Duluth MN in 2009 and had 50k Miles on the odometer.

Paul is doing well and his sister Kris and Kevin Kinney stepped in to pick up the leadership pieces. I complement them for pulling things together so well. Things were also complicated by the person in charge of registration, Marge Dahl, who was not able to attend due to a family death. Gopher and other Heartland members took this in stride. The site in Brooklyn Center, MN provided a large parking area for the show. To add to the confusion,the hotel changed its name shortly after the release of the registration forms. The Hawkeye chapter was well represented with members Joy and Alan Oldfield, Vickie and Dean Stoltenberg, Harold Werley, Gene Upstill and our director, Bill Gorman attending. Weather was in the low 80s without rain. The how had 80 plus cars, complete total was not available when I had to leave. Judging was on the BCA 400 point system. Winning cars will be reported later.
