Orchard House Newsletter SEPTEMBER 2015 Glam Sparrow, who played here in August
MONDAY MORNING CRAFTS SESSIONS RETURN Many residents have been eager to take part in Arts and Crafts, but want to know in advance what the session will be. This months timetable has listings for sessions. Here are two suggested projects: 1. The Trust Annual Christmas Card Competition. As in previous years, designs will be judged by representatives from across the Trust. One winner per region will be selected. From these four designs, one will be used for the Trust Christmas card. Card designs must be original, drawn or painted on a sheet of plain white paper. Designs may be produced by an individual or a group of residents 2. Handbook For New Arrivals. The residents of Orchard House have decided to produce an introduction to the home for new residents and their families. Straight from the horse s mouth. This handbook needs enriching by your experiences, and begins this month. All ideas and willing hands for projects are welcome! In Memoriam Mr. ROY HERBERT 30th July nd August 2015 Mr. Herbert came to stay with us in August. Our condolences go to Mrs. Herbert, and our best wishes. Mr. ERIC CHALLENOR 25th August th August 2015 Mr. Challenor took a room here for a brief time. Our thoughts are with his family. Mrs. PATRICIA FISHER 16th March th August 2015 Pat was well known and will be missed at Orchard House.
RESIDENTS AND FAMILIES MEETINGS Headlines from the recent meetings (minutes to follow on week commencing 7th September) Requests for Activities will be taken on Mondays and Thursdays following. The committee will gather requests from residents who don t do. Requests include: Membership of local video shop we have an account; requests for films can be taken to Fergus. More songs for the Singalongs (not Christmas songs) - new songs are currently being introduced. Requests for Tuck Shop items are collected by Julie at the start of the month and given to Fergus. August requests were successfully done this way. Advertising for events, meetings etc should be more visible in the home. Fergus is to distribute more flyers and posters. Reminders from staff would be appreciated. Minibus capacity for wheelchairs could be improved. Fergus will investigate removing the foremost passenger seat to make another wheelchair space available. Chairlady: Joyce Newman Secretary: Paul Wynne ORCHARD HOUSE RESIDENTS COMMITTEE: Assistant Chairlady: Peggy Harrington-Stewart Assistant Secretary: Lilian Boreham Supporting Committee Members: Lynn Tombs and Bill Ballinger Minutes of the meetings are available from your Committee Secretaries Paul and Lilian. Please ask staff if you need help to contact them.
FOCUS ON CRAFTS The Robert Crowley lounge has become the centre of creative activity for Orchard House projects. Keenly supported by family and friends, residents have worked hard and produced a wide range of items in Arts and Crafts sessions. Here are some of the highlights. Pauline and Winnie decorating kites for the Dementia Week collage in May David and Peggy trying out Picture Framing John Holmen working on last months front door display Here are some items made in Sue and Judy s Arts and Crafts sessions for our Summer Fayre. Monday morning craft sessions return on 7th September, with more helping hands and some interesting new projects. ABOVE: Welcome cards for new arrivals are being made, and Birthday cards, all designed by residents. Teamwork and Tea, with Kathleen sticking, David lettering and Anne cutting out. Mary and Bob supervise. The Trust Christmas Card Competition is this month, so we ll get cracking with that on 9th September!
CONCERT REVIEW: Glam Sparrow Glam Sparrow were something a bit different from the usual acts that play here. Some people enjoyed the music, others found it a bit too different. Musicians Russ and Andrea have been playing at festivals and specialise in providing an intimate, unique live performance at Care and Residential Homes in the Worcestershire, West Midlands and surrounding areas. Their songs range from the 1950s to present day. This suited some musical tastes, but not others. Some people felt that the singalong element was lacking. Others said they enjoyed the more modern tunes for a change, and liked Glam Sparrow s treatment of old standards. Conclusion: Glam Sparrow are not favourites. WATCH FOR THE RETURN OF SINGER/POET NEIL PATTERSON THIS MONTH!
PROFILE: Julie Burton, Unsung Heroine Julie is married to Graham Burton, ands most of the time they will be found together in his room on the ground floor. Graham and Julie met through their work with computers in 1990; they married in 1993.He has two daughters in Yorkshire, Samantha and Marcelle. Julie helps out a lot at Orchard House with trips, activities, and takes the residents Tuck Shop requests to Fergus. Julie (left) with good friend and former resident Sylvia Trotman, on the notorious Weston trip of Some of you may know that Julie runs a pub called The Odessa. I asked her for an anecdote from the pub and she told me about a gentleman nicknamed Chicken Tony. Chicken Tony is easily recognised by his remarkable hat. At Christmas, Easter, and often on Sunday he decorates it with all sorts of trinkets birds, badges, key rings, even a miniature Eiffel Tower. Oh, and some chicken feathers.
