AIM OF THE COURSE Take members with varying levels of experience and improve the level of confidence they feel about using their ipad. At the end of the course they should have the confidence to: Understand the ipad s hardware features Understand the messages the ipad delivers to them Use the ipad to maintain a calendar, a contacts list, send s, search and interact with webpages, take and display pictures, transfer pictures and documents between the ipad and a PC, have a videoconference Install apps from the App Store IPAD HARDWARE Tablet computers were first introduced over 20 years ago but few were sold until Apple introduced the ipad in The ipad is driven by an operating system called ios which provides an environment where application programs ( apps ) run to do your bidding. Before we look at apps, I shall explain the hardware and ios features that provide the platform for the apps. FRONT Touchscreen: The biggest part of the ipad displays output text and pictures and accepts input Home button: Press it to display the home screen. Double press it to see the other running apps and controls for audio and video playback. Front camera: A camera to look at you while you are looking at the display screen. 1

TOP Sleep/Wake button: Press this key to switch it on, to lock it, wake it up and switch it off. Headphone jack: The hole where you plug in 3.5mm stereo headphones. Microphone: A tiny hole leads to a microphone. RIGHT EDGE Dual purpose switch: A) switches off sounds or B) locks the orientation. If the switch is in the down position (with the orange dot showing) it is effective. Choose in the Settings app the function which applies to the switch. Volume buttons: Press the upper button to increase the volume and the lower one to decrease it. BOTTOM Speaker: One or two speakers. Stereo effect will be poor because they are so close together. Data/Power connector: The slot to connect a cable, which is used to both deliver power to charge the ipad and to transfer data between the ipad and a PC. BACK Rear camera: Main camera of the ipad. Only put into your ipad things that are supposed to go there, however tempted you might be push a straightened paper clip in the little holes. Use a microfibre cloth to wipe the screen clean but if that doesn t clean it, use a cleaner that is safe for touchscreens. There are optional extras that you can add to your ipad like keyboards, headphones, docks, screen protectors, but I shall concentrate on the basic ipad. If you are going to carry the ipad with you, it will suffer less damage if you keep it in a sleeve designed specifically for it. 2

HOW TO HOLD THE IPAD CORRECTLY While the ipad's display will rotate with the device, allowing you to use it no matter how you are holding it, there are actually right and wrong ways to hold the ipad. Or, perhaps more accurately, there are better and worse ways to hold it. And learning how to hold the ipad correctly will actually make it easier to use. The ipad has two basic display modes when held. Portrait mode is when the longest sides of the ipad are to the left and right of the display, which makes screen longer than it is wide. When the ipad is rotated 90 degrees, the display rotates into landscape mode. In this mode, the ipad is wider than it is long. Portrait mode is great for normal operation, such as reading and browsing the web. When holding the ipad in portrait mode, you should hold it with the Home Button below the screen. This puts the camera at the top of the screen, which is better for making video calls or taking selfies. This also puts the volume controls on the right side at the top of the ipad. And most importantly, it puts the suspend button on the top side at the far right of the ipad. If you held the ipad with the Home Button at the top of the screen, it would be easy to accidentally engage suspend mode if you rested the ipad against a table or even against your lap. One thing to be aware of when holding the ipad with the Home Button below the screen is that it puts the speakers at the bottom of the device. Because the ipad speakers do a good job of projecting sound out rather than down, this shouldn't be a problem. But if you are resting it on a table, you will want to make sure the ipad is resting at a slight angle. Landscape mode is great for watching movies and videos. It's also a good way to hold the ipad for some games, and if you want the text on the screen to increase without using pinch-to-zoom, flipping it over to landscape mode can do the trick. When using Landscape mode, the Home Button should be to the right of the display. This will put the volume button on top of the ipad to the far right side and the suspend button on the left side at the top. It also conveniently leaves no buttons on the bottom. Obviously, the ipad will still operate no matter how you orient it. But these positions will make the buttons more accessible and reduce the likelihood of accidentally pushing a button because the ipad is resting on top of it. Some apps may not consult the accelerometer and will not alter the display as you rotate the ipad. You can lock the orientation using the lock switch on the side. Later models do not have the lock switch; you can lock the rotation in the Control Centre. 3

TURNING ON THE IPAD I assume that you have all switched on your ipad and completed the actions required to configure it for the way you want to use it. Your ipad will probably spend most of its time locked i.e. sleeping but still switched on. It is designed to work that way and the battery supports that way of working. It continues to run apps that don t interact with the screen e.g. play music or receive s. To unlock your ipad, press the Sleep/Wake button briefly. If you have switched your ipad off completely and want to switch it on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until it starts to respond. Then wait until the lock screen image appears. TURNING OFF THE IPAD Lock the ipad by pressing the Sleep/Wake key briefly. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake key to switch off the ipad completely. The charger works with the ipad powered on or off. SETTINGS There are many settings that control the way ios and your apps behave and we can t look at all of them. Because you need to be familiar with changing the settings, we shall look at several of them now. Passcode: Set a 4-digit code or a longer password to control access. Auto-Lock: If you leave the ipad alone, it will lock itself after the time-out interval expires. You can change that value in the Settings app. Airplane Mode: With this enabled all wireless communications (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular) on the ipad are switched off. Wi-Fi: Set the password for the CVS Wi-Fi which has the name Sandbach. Notifications: Some apps may notify you when you need to know about an occurrence that has happened or is about to happen. You can decide in Settings if you want an app to notify you this way. If you don t know yet whether you want to be told or not, let them appear and you can change the settings later. Do Not Disturb: If you allow notifications and you leave your ipad by your bed when you sleep, you might want to set this option so that the noise doesn t wake you. You can also do this in Control Centre. Location Services in Privacy: This allows the Maps app and the Camera app to see where you are and share that information. It also uses more power. You can switch it off and on when you need to. Brightness: The brighter the screen is the more power it consumes. Auto-Brightness adjusts the screen according to the ambient light and eases the load on your battery. 4

USING THE TOUCHSCREEN Touch / Tap: You touch an object, an icon, a control, a menu item, and so on. The touch operation is similar to a mouse click on a computer. Double-tap: Touch the screen twice in the same location. Double-tapping can be used to zoom in on an image or a map, but it can also zoom out. Long-touch: A long-touch occurs when you touch part of the screen and keep your finger down. Depending on what you re doing, a pop-up menu may appear, or the item you re long-touching may get picked up so that you can drag (move) it around. Long-touch might also be referred to as touch and hold in some documentation. Swipe Up and Down: You can scroll down a list by placing the tip of your finger at the bottom of the screen and moving it towards the top of the display to swipe up. At first, it may seem counterintuitive to scroll down by swiping up, but if you think of it as your finger moving the screen, it makes sense. You can scroll up a list by swiping down, which is accomplished by placing your finger at the top of the screen and moving it toward the bottom of the screen. Swipe Left and Right: If objects are displayed horizontally, you can sometimes swipe from one side of the screen to the other side to navigate. A perfect example of this is the Photos app, which displays all of the photos on your ipad. When you are viewing a photo full screen, you can swipe from the right side of the ipad display to the left side to move to the next photo. Similarly, you can swipe from the left to the right to move to a previous photo. Pinch: A pinch involves two fingers, which start out separated and then are brought together. The effect is used to reduce the size of an image or see more of a map. Spread: The opposite of pinch is spread. You start out with your fingers together and then spread them. The spread is used to enlarge an image or see more detail on a map. 5

Rotate: A few apps let you rotate an image on the screen by touching with two fingers and twisting them around a centre point. Think of turning a combination lock on a safe, and you get the rotate operation. The only app I have seen to use this gesture is Maps. It s important to remember that the ipads are intended to be easy to operate. If you are faced with an unfamiliar situation, without a menu to choose, use the gestures we just covered to find some guidance. The choices you need may be presented to you. The most likely gestures to be useful are long-touch and tapping an empty screen. Tap the Top Menu: If you've scrolled down a web page and want to get back to the top, you don't need to scroll back up. Instead, you can tap the very top menu, which is the one with the Wi-Fi signal on the left and the battery gauge on the right. Tapping this top menu will take you back to the top of the web page. This will also work in other apps such as moving back to the top of a note in Notes or moving to the top of your Contacts list. Hint: Aim for the time displayed at the very top centre of the ipad. Swipe From Left Edge to Move Back: Apple added many of the swipe-from-the-edge gestures with the ios 7 update. Another handy one is the ability to swipe from the left edge of the display toward the middle of the display to activate a 'move back' command. In the Safari web browser, this will take you to the last visited web page -- handy if you've gone into an article from Google News and want to get back to the news list. In Mail, it will take you from an individual message back to the list of your messages. This gesture doesn't work in all apps, but many that have a list that lead to individual items will have this gesture. HOME BUTTON Apple's design is to have as few buttons on the exterior of the ipad as possible, and one of the few buttons on the outside is the Home Button. This is the circular button at the bottom of the ipad with the square in the middle. The Home Button is used to wake the ipad when it is sleeping. It is also used to exit out of applications, and if you have put the ipad into a special mode (such as the mode that allows you to move application icons), the home button is used to exit that mode. You can think of the Home Button as the "Go Home" button. Whether your ipad is sleeping or you are inside of an application, it will take you to the home screen. But the Home Button has one other very important feature: It activates Siri, the ipad's voice recognition personal assistant. When the screen is locked while playing music, double press the home button to bring up music controls. 6

THE HOME SCREEN App Icons: The Home screen displays the apps you have available. There is one icon for each app. Some app icons include a number. This represents pending actions e.g. unread messages. Wallpaper: The background image on your Home screen. Dock: This is a row along the bottom of the screen where you can save up to six apps in a fixed place. They appear on every page of the home screen set. You can customise the Home screen to make it look just as you want. If you touch a part of the screen that doesn t have an icon or a control, nothing happens. The Home screen may be made up of multiple panels, only one of which shown on the screen at one time. Swipe left or right to the others. HOW TO MOVE IPAD APPS After a while, you will start filling your ipad up with apps. Once the first screen is full, apps will begin appearing on a second page. This means you will need to use the Swipe Left and Swipe Right gestures to move between pages of apps. But what if you want to put the apps in a different order? Or move an app from the second page to the first page? You can move an ipad app by placing your finger on the app's icon and holding it down until all of the icons on the screen start jiggling. (Some icons will also show a black circle with an x in the middle.) This is the "Move State". While your ipad is in the Move State, you can move icons by holding your finger down on top of them and simply moving your finger without lifting it from the screen. You can then drop it into another spot by lifting your finger. Moving an ipad app to another screen is a little trickier, but uses the same basic concept. Simply enter the Move State and hold your finger down on the app you want to move. This time, we'll move our finger to the right edge of the ipad's screen to move it over one page. When you get to the edge of the display, hold the app in the same position for one second and the screen will move from one page of apps to the next. The app icon will still move with your finger, and you can move it into position and "drop" it by lifting your finger. When you are finished moving ipad apps, you can leave the "move state" by pressing the Home Button. Remember, this button is one of the few physical buttons on the ipad and is used to let you exit from what you are doing on the ipad. 7

HOW TO DELETE AN IPAD APP Once you've mastered moving apps, deleting them is very simple. When you entered the Move State, a grey circle with an "x" in the middle appeared on the corner of some apps. These are the apps you are allowed to delete. (You can't delete apps that come with the ipad such as the Maps app or the Photos app). While in the Move State, simply tap on the grey x button to delete the app. You can still flip from one page to the next by swiping left or swiping right, so if you aren't on the page with the app you want to remove, you don't need to exit the Move State to find it. After you tap the grey x button, you will be prompted to confirm your choice. The confirmation window will include the app's name so you can be certain you are deleting the right one before you tap the "Delete" button. HOW TO CREATE FOLDERS AND ORGANIZE IPAD APPS You can also create a folder of icons on the ipad screen. To do this, enter the "move state" by touching an ipad app and holding your finger down on it until the app icons are jiggling. You move an app around the screen by keeping your finger on the icon and moving the finger on the display. You create a folder by 'dropping' one icon on top of another icon. Notice that when you move an icon on top of the icon for another app, that app is highlighted by a square. This indicates that you can create a folder by lifting your finger, thereby dropping the icon on it. And you can put other icons in the folder by dragging them to the folder and dropping them on it. When you create a folder, you will see a title bar with the name of the folder on it and all of the contents below it. If you want to rename the folder, simply touch the title area and type in a new name using the on-screen keyboard. (The ipad will try to give the folder a smart name based on the functionality of the apps you have combined.) In the future, you can just tap the folder icon to get access to those apps. When you are in the folder and want to exit out of it, simply press the ipad home button. The home button is used to exit out of whatever task you are currently doing on the ipad. To remove an app from a folder, long-press an icon to enter the Move State. Tap the folder to open it and drag the icon out to the home screen. If you keep dragging icons out, the folder will disappear after you remove the last icon. Tip: You can also place a folder on the Home Screen dock similar to placing an app on it. This is another great way at getting to your most popular apps without resorting to asking Siri to open them or using Spotlight Search. 8

REVIEWING NOTIFICATIONS The Notification Centre drops down over whatever you re doing at the time so that you can easily see calendar entries, reminders, and new messages. Here s what you need to know about navigating the Notification Centre: To summon the Notification Centre to the forefront of your ipad screen, you swipe from the top of the screen downward. To close the Notification Centre, either drag the arrow or the three little grey lines (at the bottom of the list) upward or tap anywhere outside the list. To open a notification, tap it and it will open in the appropriate app. To clear a single notification,, tap the little x in a circle to the right of the app s name. Tapping the x turns it into a Clear button. Tap the Clear button and all the notification is cleared. SPOTLIGHT SEARCH Spotlight Search may be one of the most underused features of the ipad, mainly because people either don't know about it or simply forget to use it. You can launch Spotlight Search by swiping down on the ipad when you are in the Home Screen. (That's the screen with all of the icons.) Be careful not to swipe from the top edge of the screen else you will launch the notification centre. Spotlight Search will search your entire ipad. It will even search outside of your ipad, such as popular websites. If you type in the name of an app you have installed on your ipad, it will appear as an icon in the search results. In fact, you will probably only need to type in the first few letters for it to pop up under "Top Hits." And if you type in the name of an app you don't have installed on your ipad, you will receive a result that allows you to view that app in the App Store. But what about an app you use all the time like Safari or Mail or Settings? Remember how we moved apps around the screen? You can also move apps off the dock at the bottom of the screen and move new apps to the dock in a similar manner. In fact, the dock will actually hold six icons, so you can drop one without removing any that come standard on the dock. Having your frequently used apps on the dock will keep you from hunting them down because the apps on the dock are present no matter which Home Screen page your ipad is showing at the moment. So it's a good idea to put your most popular apps on the dock. 9

CONTROL CENTRE The Control Panel is probably one of the most useful 'hidden' features of the ipad. I refer to it as hidden because many people don't even realize it exists, and yet, it can be extremely useful. The control panel will let you control your music, including adjusting the volume or skipping a song, or turn on features like Bluetooth or AirDrop. You can even adjust the brightness of your screen from the Control Panel. You can get to the Control Panel by swiping up from the very bottom edge of the screen. This is the exact opposite of how you activate the notifications centre. Once you begin swiping up from the bottom edge, you will see the control panel start to appear. USING SIRI Siri was introduced to the ipad with Apple's ios 6.0 update, but it requires a 3rd generation "ipad 3" in order to work. And because Siri passes your question up to Apple's servers to be analysed, it also requires an active Internet connection, either through Wi-Fi or a 4G/3G connection. Here's how to turn the Siri feature on: Tap the Settings app on your ipad to go into the settings. Find "General" in the left-side menu and tap it to bring up general settings. The Siri settings are near the top, just under "Usage". Tap the Siri button to proceed to those settings. Slide the button at the top from Off to On. Ensure you have an active Internet connection Switch off Airplane Mode While talking to your ipad may seem a little odd at first, Siri is not a gimmick. In fact, she can be an invaluable assistant once you learn how to get the most out of her, especially if you aren't already an extremely organized person. Handout #2 gives a lot more information about using Siri. It is available from the Sandbach U3A website as Handout#2 10
