Minoan Column at the Palace of Minos, Crete CARLI Digital Collections EXERCISE 2: MODELING MINOAN COLUMNS ASSIGNMENT: In this exercise you will create an architectural element, a Minoan shaped column, using Standard and Extended Primitives. Minoan columns, like the ones pictured above, are found on the island of Crete and are unique for their bulb shaped capitol and slight outward taper. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Introduction to working with Standard Primitives Introduction to naming objects Introduction to working with modifiers Grouping elements PROCEDURE: 1. Open Autodesk VIZ From the pulldown menus select Customize, Units Setup College of DuPage Architecture 2220: Architectural Modeling 1
3. Set the units to US Standard, feet w/ decimal inches. Note, this will be the default units setting for the all of the exercises in this course. Note: you will not be prompted to save your work in these exercises. You should save your work often. For this exercise save your work in your student directory as yourname-exercise2.max 4. Click the Create Tab on the Command Panel. Click the Geometry tool and select Standard Primitives. 5. Select the Box tool and then click the Keyboard Entry rollout. College of DuPage Architecture 2220: Architectural Modeling 2
6. Create a box with x,y,z coordinates all set to 0. Enter Length = 2 0, Width = 2 0 and Height = 2 as shown below. Click on Create. 7. In the Name and Color rollout name the object Column-Base. Note: You may want to change the color of each object you create. If the default color is difficult to view, feel free to change the color of each object as you create it. 8. Create a Cylinder using the Keyboard Entry rollout. Keep the x,y,z coordinates set to 0. Enter Radius = 11 and Height = 3.5. Note: Pay attention to units 9. Click Create. 10. In the Parameters rollout change the Height Segments = 5 and the Sides = 18 (default setting). 11. In the Name and Color rollout change the name to base. 12. Create another cylinder for the column shaft using the same method. Keep the x,y,z coordinates set to 0. Enter Radius = 10 and Height = Click Create. 14. In the Parameters rollout change the Height Segments = 10 and the Sides = In the Name and Color rollout change the name to shaft. 16. Your model should now look like figure Arc rotate, zoom or pan as necessary to see the entire view. Figure 2.01 Figure 2.02 College of DuPage Architecture 2220: Architectural Modeling 3
APPLYING MULTIPLIERS 17. Use the Select Object tool to select the Cylinder named shaft if it is not already selected. 18. Click the Modify Tab on the command panel. 19. Apply a taper modifier to the cylinder by flying out the modifiers list and selecting taper. 20. Set the Amount = 0.3 and the Curve = 0.5. The primary Axis should be set to Z and the effect should be set to XY. Note: you may want to experiment with changing the values and the axis to see how they effect the object. In the end, however, your settings should be as listed above. 21. Your column should now look like figure CREATING THE CAPITOL 22. Create a Cylinder using the Keyboard Entry rollout. Set the Z coordinate = 8 0 to locate it above the ground plane. Enter Radius = 13 and Height = Click Create. 24. In the Parameters rollout verify that the Height Segments = 10 and the Sides = In the Name and Color rollout change the name to Capitol Base. 26. Click the Modify Tab on the command panel. 27. Apply a taper modifier to the cylinder by flying out the modifiers list and selecting taper. 28. Set the Amount = 0.4 and the Curve = The primary Axis should be set to Z and the effect should be set to XY. Hit Enter. 29. In the Create Tab, select the Torus tool and then click the Keyboard Entry rollout. 30. Set Z = Major Radius = Minor Radius = Click Create 32. In the Name and Color rollout change the name to Capitol Top. 33. Create another Torus using the same method. 34. Set Z = 8 0. Major Radius = Minor Radius = Click Create 36. In the Name and Color rollout change the name to Ring. CREATING THE COLUMN TOP 37. Create a Box using the Keyboard Entry rollout. Enter Length = 3 8, Width = 3 8 and Height = 4 as shown below. Set the Z coordinate = Click on Create. 39. In the Name and Color rollout change the name to Column Top. 40. Click on the Maximize Viewport Toggle button to view all four viewports. 41. Your model should now look like figure College of DuPage Architecture 2220: Architectural Modeling 4
Arc rotate as necessary to adjust your perspective view to match figure 2.03 Figure 2.03 GROUPING OBJECTS 42. Using the Select by Name tool, select all of the objects in the scene. Use the control key or the shift key to highlight more than one object at a time, and then click on select. 43. From the main menu bar select Group, Group. 44. Name the group Column. College of DuPage Architecture 2220: Architectural Modeling 5
45. With the column selected, activate the select and move tool. 46. Activate the top viewport 47. Hold down the Shift key and drag a second column to the right constraining in the x direction. 48. In the Clone Options dialog box select the Instance radio button and click ok. 49. Using the Absolute mode transform type-in, change the x coordinate to Repeat the same process as above to create a third instanced column. 51. Use the Absolute mode transform type-in to set the x coordinate to 12-0 for this column. 52. You have now created a colonnade with three columns 6-0 on center as shown in figure End of Exercise, save your file in your student directory as yournameexercise2.max Figure 2.04 College of DuPage Architecture 2220: Architectural Modeling 6
