2 In order to set up your ipad, you need an itunes Account. *You need to set up your itunes Account on your primary computer at your school. Your ipad should only be associated with one itunes Account. Each time you connect your ipad to your computer; your itunes account will back-up all of your information and notify you of any software updates. It is recommended that you connect your ipad to your itunes account at least once every two weeks. Once you have created your itunes Account and connected the ipad to your computer, you should NOT connect your ipad to any OTHER computers or any other itunes Accounts. *Please make sure you have a valid itunes Card before beginning this process. itunes Cards start at $10. They can be purchased at Walmart or Food Lion. Download itunes to your computer by using the following link: Use the download now button to download itunes and follow the on-screen instructions. 3 You can access itunes by going to Start>Programs>iTunes After successfully downloading itunes, you need to create an itunes Account. Using the menu bar at the top of the screen, click on Store and choose Home. Using the sign-in button at the top right corner, create an itunes Account. When creating your itunes Account, do not enter any payment information other than the information for the itunes Card. After successfully creating your itunes Account, be sure to sign in! 5 Next, using the ipad USB cord, connect the ipad to your computer. This screen will appear while the ipad is connecting to itunes. Follow the on-screen instructions in itunes to register your ipad and sync the ipad with music, video and other content from your library as well as with your contacts, calendars and bookmarks on your computer. In the set up your ipad screen, select Automatically sync contacts, calendars and Bookmarks to have those items automatically sync when you connect your ipad to the computer. 6 How to make sure your ipad is connected with itunes Your device name will appear under the devices section on the left side of the screen. Syncing with itunes Use itunes to sync your music, videos, download apps, and other itunes Library content from your computer. You can also sync your contacts, calendars, and your browser bookmarks. itunes lets you choose the content and information that you want to sync with the ipad. By default, itunes syncs automatically whenever you connect your ipad to your computer. When you sync, you can also transfer information you create or purchase on the ipad to your computer. Understanding the 8 Tabs: Notice the 8 tabs across the top of the screen, these tabs give you access to the information that is on your ipad. Summary- The summary screen can be used to check for updates and restore your ipad if needed. It is important to sync your ipad on a regular basis; if the ipad malfunctions or becomes missing, all of your information Getting Started with Your ipad 2, DCS Technology Department Page 6

7 as well as apps and/or music will remain in your itunes account and you will be able to restore the replacement device to make it identical to the previous one. You should have your ipad set up to automatically sync, you can also use the sync button at the bottom right corner each time you connect. The capacity bar indicates the amount space being used on the ipad and gives a synopsis of what the space is being used for. Info- allows you to sync information with Microsoft Outlook and various web browsers based on information that is stored on your computer. Do not use this feature, you can add your G-mail account by using the Mail app. Apps- Gives a visual list of apps that are in your itunes account. Check to be sure your Sync Apps box is checked. Each app has an individual check box, only that apps that have a check mark will be synced if the Sync Apps box is left unchecked. The apps on page 1 cannot be removed from the ipad. These are the default apps, they cannot be rearranged. Additional pages are added to the ipad based on how many apps are loaded. There are hundreds of apps in the app store to choose from. Using the apps tab, you can click on the apps and move them around to re-arrange them. After re-arranging them on the computer, simply press the apply button at the bottom right corner of the screen and the changes will be applied to the ipad. (When using the ipad, you can use your pointer finger to slide the screen to the left to view each page of apps). Music- this tab stores all of the music in your itunes account. Check the Sync Music box if you would like your music to sync automatically. Otherwise, use the other check boxes and the apply button to choose which music you would like to appear via the ipod icon on your ipad home screen. Movies- this tab stores of your movies in your itunes account. You can set it up to automatically sync movies or sync them based on which ones have boxes checked. TV Shows- this tab stores all of the TV shows in your itunes account. You can set it up to automatically sync TV shows or sync them based on which ones have boxes check. Books- this tab stores all of the Books in your itunes account. You can set it up to automatically sync books or sync them based on which ones have boxes checked. 8 Photos- this tab stores the Photos in your itunes account. The ipad2 has a camera. Photos taken with the ipad2 will be synced into your itunes account for back-up. You also have the option of downloading photos that are already stored on your computer or flash drive. After syncing photos to your ipad, you can access them by using the Photos app on the home screen. There is an option in the Photos apps to look at photos as a slideshow. *Return to the summary tab. Understanding how to sync an app from your desktop computer/laptop: From the menu bar, select store then select home. You have now entered the itunes store. In the top right corner, you should see information for your itunes account, including your balance. Using the search bar, type in WRAL and press Enter. Using the box that says Filter by Media Type, click on Apps. Under ipad apps, click on the WRAL app. After clicking on the app, you will be directed to a screen that gives more information about the app. You can read a description, look at screen shots and read reviews. This process will help you in deciding whether or not to purchase apps. Click on the button that says free app. This will allow you to get the app for your ipad. Next you will be prompted to enter your password, and then click on get. Notice the download circle that spins on the left side of the screen. This means the app is being downloaded into your itunes account. Next, under devices click on your device and choose the apps tab. At the bottom of the screen click on apply. 9 finished, the box at the top of the computer screen will inform you that it is done. Finally, press the home button on your ipad, using your finger, swipe to the left to see page 2. The app should appear on the page. Using the WRAL app, you can watch the daily news! Go back to the itunes Store and search for Dropbox. Download and Sync the Dropbox app. Dropbox App You can also download apps directly from the ipad without connecting it to the computer. There is an app store app on the home screen of the ipad. All apps that are downloaded from the ipad will be transferred added to your itunes account when you connect it to your computer. From your ipad, choose the App Store app. Notice the buttons across the bottom of the screen. Click on the featured button Using your finger, type tap the search bar, your keyboard will appear. Next, type Common Core in the search box and press the search button on your keyboard. Choose the Common Core App and download it. Next search for and download the G-mail app. After you have successfully downloaded the app, refer back to your itunes account on your computer. Choose the summary tab and click on the sync button at the bottom of the screen. The box at the top of the screen will indicate that the Constitution app is being copied to your itunes account. 10 Occasionally, you may see a red circle on the app store button on your ipad. This indicates that you have apps that need to be updated. Use the updates button in the app store to update as necessary. You can use the itunes app on the ipad to download music. *There are a lot of free apps in the itunes store; apps that are not free will have a price instead of the word free. Connecting to Wi-Fi Choose the settings app on the home screen. Select the second option Wi-Fi. Choose DCS-Wifi (be sure to click on the word, not the blue arrow). Tap the box to enter the password. Password- duplin10wifi The ipad will save the password and automatically connect anytime you are within access to Duplin County Schools Wi-fi. A blue check will appear to confirm your connection. 11 Add your account using the mail application. Choose the g-mail icon. You can set other features for your by using the settings application. Choose the Mail, Contacts, Calendars option to activate features you would like to use with your account. You can also use the Notifications option to set other features. Mail Application Calendar Application You can add events to your calendar by selecting the calendar application and tapping the plus sign at the bottom of the screen. Change views by choosing day, week, month or list. Add alerts to events if you want to be notified. Contacts You can add contacts to your ipad by selecting the contacts application and tapping the plus sign. Contacts are listed alphabetically. 12 contacts that will be used for FaceTime calls. (FaceTime will be discussed during principal s meeting) Notes You can add notes to your ipad by selecting the Notes application and tapping the plus sign. All notes will automatically be saved. You can notes using the envelope icon if you have an account set up on your ipad. You can delete them using the trash can. *Remember to use your home button to return to the home screen. *Remember to back-up you ipad regularly and check for software updates.
