Overview The PulseGuard Software in conjunction with the PulseGuard Sensor have been designed for use throughout the night to monitor a heart rate and alert should the BPM go above or below a set limit. When this occurs, PulseGuard will record the event for future reference. How this works: The Sensor uses LED lights and an electro-optical cell to sense the volume of blood under the skin. From there, sophisticated algorithms are applied to the pulse signal so that the heart s true rhythm can be detected. Once the sensor has detected the heart rate, BTLE (Bluetooth) technology is used to transmit the data to the PulseGuard Software, where it is interpreted and displayed for your use. As the PulseGuard Software/Sensor monitors fluctuation in the heart rate, this can be used to accurately detect the possible start of a seizure in persons that have ictal tachycardia (the increase in heart rate during a seizure) or ictal bradycardia (the reduction of heart rate during a seizure). It will also give an immediate alarm of a cardiac arrest, the onset of hypoglycemia and any condition that has symptoms affecting the heart-rate The PulseGuard system makes an excellent utility for monitoring people who suffer from seizures in their sleep and who have the above conditions. Important PulseGuard has been designed and tested to work on a dedicated ipad mini running ios 7 and above. To ensure correct operation, you will require a wi-fi connection with internet. Please do not install any software updates unless specifically informed to do so by Adris Technologies Ltd. Page 03
PulseGuard User Guide Section 1: PulseGuard Hardware Before setting up PulseGuard, please see the diagrams below to help with understanding the positioning and range of each component. Only one sensor can be connected to the PulseGuard tablet at a time, but swapping sensors is a very quick process. (see section 2, Connecting the Sensor ) Position the PulseGuard tablet within 2 meters of the sensor (depending on environmental factors), when monitoring the heart rate. Further distance could give false readings and cause a drop out of the sensor signal, causing PulseGuard to alarm. The optional Bluetooth Speaker can be used within 10 meters of the PulseGuard tablet. As a portable speaker, you can carry it around with you, but it should be kept within range. The range is omni-directional, so can be used above or below, as well us on the same level as the PulseGuard tablet. If positioned out of range, it could cause a dropout of connection, and the PulseGuard alarm will sound directly from the tablet. Please note: It is advised that the PulseGuard tablet should be connected to a power source when in use, so the battery does not run low. Page 04
PulseGuard User Guide Section 2: Connecting the Sensor Your PulseGuard Sensor can be worn on either the wrist or the leg whichever is more comfortable but must have good contact with the skin (no visible light should be seen between the sensor and skin). For young children it can be worn above the elbow or knee. It is recommended that if you have a Vagal Nerve Stimulated (VNS) fitted that it be worn on the ankle to avoid the VNS interrupting the Bluetooth signal and possibly causing false alarms. Push and hold the central knobbly button on the PulseGuard Sensor until the blue light appears. The light will pulse gently while it is finding a heartbeat. Once a heartbeat has been detected the blue light will blink on and off. Next, go to the tablet and launch the PulseGuard Software. NOTE - The tablet must be kept within a 2m range of the Sensor and a 10m range of the optional Bluetooth speaker when connecting and monitoring. Page 5
When the Software has opened press the green connect button on the left side of the screen. A message will appear stating Searching for Sensor. Please allow a few seconds for the sensor to connect. Once the Sensor is connected, the screen will show the current BPM being received from the PulseGuard Sensor in the Blue Circle on the centre of the screen. On the top left side of the screen you will notice the maximum/ minimum BPM. After using the App for 5 minutes, take a note of the maximum/ minimum BPM ready for the next section where you will use them to set up the alarm(s). Page 06
PulseGuard User Guide Section 3: Setting the Alarm On the main page, select the Alarm Setup located on the top centre of the screen. The Alarm Settings menu will open. With your finger, slide the red maximum/ minimum buttons to set the desired limits. The limits should be based on the values from the previous section + or 20bpm. For instance if the maximum recorded was 110, it should be set to 130. If the minimum was 80, it should be set to 60. This is just a guide. Once this is set, you may need to adjust over time. On the same screen select the alarm type. A description of the alarm types can be found under each of the alarm buttons when selected. Page 07
Once you have selected your alarm type, press the button labelled Save. This will close the Alarm Settings screen. Your selected alarm is now displayed on the main screen. The final step is to select the volume level located at the top right hand side of the screen. We recommend you keep this at the maximum setting but it can be adjusted to suit personal preference. Page 08
PulseGuard User Guide Section 4: Alarm Activiation Should the alarm be activated, a repeating beep will sound. The BPM will turn red and the red button on the right hand side of the screen will show Silence Alarm. Press the Silence Alarm button to stop the alarm. This will begin a cool down timer of 10 minutes which will appear under the BPM. The button will change to display Rearm Now. Once the heart rate has returned to a normal rhythm, the BPM will turn white again and you can either press the Rearm Now button or wait until the timer reaches zero which will automatically rearm PulseGuard INFO When the alarm is activated, PulseGuard will automatically begin to store the information that triggered the alarm for future reference. We will cover how to access this information in the next section. Page 09
Section 5: Data Manager The PulseGuard Software will automatically keep a record of the heart rate activity during an alarm that has been triggered for your reference and your doctor s should you need it. This information can be accessed via the Data Manager function, here is how to do it: It is recommended to only send 8 to 10 recorded events in an at once, any more could cause the to refuse to send. Click the Data Manager button located at the top centre of the screen. A screen will appear with a list of all your recorded data. Select the data you want to send by tapping it. On the top left an button will appear with the number selected listed. Once the desired data is selected, click this button. An will appear with the selected information currently stored attached. NOTE In order to use this function, you will need to have an account configured on your tablet. Send the to either yourself or another address of your choosing. Once your has been sent, the Data Manager will close. To delete the data which is no longer needed, re-open the Data Manager and swipe the desired data to remove. A Delete button will appear; press to delete. If you would like all the data to be deleted, select the delete all button on the top right. Caution! Only press the Delete Data button once you are sure you no longer need the recorded data, this will delete all stored data from the Software. Page 10
PulseGuard User Guide Section 5: About Button The about button, located in the centre of the screen to the left of the Setup button contains important information about the Software. Within this area, you will find this user manual, the Terms and Conditions and the copyright information for PulseGuard. Please read through this information carefully. Section 7: Charging and turning off PulseGuard Once you have finished using PulseGuard, make sure to press the disconnect button within the software before removing the sensor or turning the sensor off. If you do turn off the sensor or remove it from your body PulseGuard will think that you have a zero-heart rate or the sensor s battery has run out, which will cause it to go into an alarm. Once PulseGuard has been disconnected, the Data Manager feature will still work and now may be a good time to send any important information. It is important to ensure your sensor is charged properly after each use, and so to achieve this, please make sure you place the sensor back onto its charging cradle. If the sensor is correctly placed on the charging cradle, a blue light will appear to slowly fade in and out, this informs that the sensor is charging. Once the light permanently goes out, the charging period is at an end and the sensor can be used again. If you discover the sensor is not sitting on the cradle properly, is not charging fully or is located in a position where it may get knocked and then come off charge, we recommend that when putting the sensor on charge, you place the charger on the grey sponge which came with the sensor and do the strap up snuggly, ensuring the charging cradle is tightly positioned between the sponge and the sensor and the sensor is still displaying the charging light. Page 11
Section 8: Bluetooth Speaker Setup If you have purchased our optional Bluetooth speaker, please follow the following instructions to set it up: Remove speaker and leads from the case. Open rubber flap on bottom of speaker marked Aux to reveal USB Socket. Plug one end of USB Cable into charger and the other end into the bottom of the speaker; a red light should illuminate to show it is charging. Press and hold the power button on the side of the speaker until it makes three beeps. Press and hold the telephone handset button next to the power button until you hear another two bleeps. You will see a little light flashing red and blue on the front of the speaker. The speaker is now ready to pair with your PulseGuard Tablet. Press the Home button on the tablet (little indented button at the bottom of the screen), then the settings icon. Touch the line saying Bluetooth and check that Bluetooth is turned on by making sure the slider on the right-hand side is showing green. If not, slide the switch to the right. Under the heading showing Devices it should show voombox-travel. Touch this to connect. The speaker will bleep once and the flashing red/ blue light will turn purple. The tablet will now show connected under the Devices heading. Your speaker is now paired with your tablet and ready for use. Page 12
Start PulseGuard by touching the icon at the bottom of the screen. At the top right hand corner of the PulseGuard screen, under the clock, you will see the Volume control. Next to that, on the far right, you should see a little blue triangle in a box. Touch the triangle/box (very fiddly) and the white Airplay screen will open. Slide your finger down the white screen until you see Voombox-travel. Touch the words Voombox-travel and a blue tick will appear next to it. You have now connected PulseGuard to your Bluetooth speaker. Touch the main PulseGuard screen again and you will see, under the volume control, Audio HeadphoneBT. All sounds will now be heard through the Bluetooth Speaker. If your Bluetooth speaker moves out of range, you will hear two bleeps from the speaker. This indicates that it has lost connection will PulseGuard and all sounds will now be heard on the tablet. Moving the speaker closer to the tablet will re-connect it. If the speaker is switched off, all sound will revert to the tablet in the same way. Please note: Other Bluetooth speakers may not be compatible with PulseGuard. You can also connect Apple Air-Play Speakers via a wi-fi connection. Page 13
Troubleshooting and Support If you encounter trouble with the software, for instance, should the Sensor lose connection and does not reconnect please close the software and reopen it. To do this: 1. Double click the Home button on your tablet. (This will display all your running programs) 2. Slide the PulseGuard window upwards until it disappears. This will close the software. 3. Reopen the PulseGuard software. This should resolve the issue. If the issue has not been resolved, please contact Technical Support with your support number on the details below. If you are still unable to connect the sensor with the Software, please shut the tablet down completely and restart it. To do this: 1. Press and hold in the small button on the top right hand corner of your tablet until you see Slide to power off displayed on the screen. 2. Follow the instruction to slide your finger in the direction of the arrow 3. When the tablet has shut down (screen completely blank) press and hold the small top button again until the Apple sign appears, then let go. 4. When the tablet has restarted, restart the PulseGuard Software as detailed in section 1. If you have accidentally deleted the PulseGuard Software, contact a member of the PulseGuard support team on the following support number to arrange an engineer to re-install your software: If you have updated the tablet to another version of ios without checking compatibility with ourselves first and you now find PulseGuard does not work, contact us on We may be able to get your software working again however it is also possible that you may have to wait until an update is officially released.
