5 SmartSwitch 7000 Series This section describes the physical device, the SPECTRUM model type, and the SPECTRUM views that are used to manage and monitor the SmartSwitch 7000 Series. The SmartSwitch 7000 Series consists of the 7C03 and the 7C04/7C04_R models. The 7C03 MMAC SmartSwitch is typically used in wiring closet switching environments. The 7C04/7C04_R WorkGroup SmartSwitch is designed specifically for standalone workgroup environments. These switches consist of the following components: Chassis Controller Module (7X00) Network Interface Modules 7C03 MMAC Chassis The 7C03 occupies two media interface module slots within an MMAC-FNB chassis. The 7C03 chassis functions independently of the MMAC- FNB chassis, using only it s power supply (Figure 1). The 7C03 chassis has three slots, one for the installation of the 7X00 Controller Module and two for network interface modules, which can include any combination of Ethernet, FDDI, Fast Ethernet or ATM modules. 6 SmartSwitch 7000 Series 7C04 WorkGroup Chassis The 7C04 (Figure 2) is a rack-mountable, standalone device that has a removable power supply. The chassis has four module slots. The Controller Module (7X00) must be inserted in slot one. The other three slots can support a combination of Ethernet, FDDI, and ATM network interface modules. The 7C04_R has two power supplies, and slots three and four are double-wide. The module has no front panel data ports. All data enters and exits the 7X00 by way of the SmartSwitch Bus on the chassis backplane. The 7X00 supports Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, FDDI, and ATM SmartSwitch network interface modules. The 7X00 module must be inserted in slot one of the chassis (see Figure 1 and Figure 2). Network Interface Modules Network interface modules communicate with each other through the chassis SmartSwitch Bus and the 7X00 SmartSwitch Controller Module. Network interface modules may be installed or removed from the chassis at any time without impacting the rest of the network. 7 SmartSwitch 7000 Series ATM Uplink Module (7A06-01) This module is an uplink module, with one active and one stand-by port, that provides high-speed ATM connectivity for the SmartSwitches. Ethernet SmartSwitch Interface Module (7E02-24/7E03-24) This module is an Ethernet connectivity module that allows up to 24 separate Ethernet segments to be switched within a single SmartSwitch with a high-speed uplink (e.g. Fast Ethernet or ATM) or 48 separate Ethernet segments without an uplink. Fast Ethernet Switch Module (7H02-06/7H02-12) This module has either six ports (7H02-06) or twelve ports (7H02-12), which consist of one Fast Ethernet Port Interface Module (FEPIM) slot, and five or eleven 100BaseTX ports. Fast Ethernet Uplink Module (7H06-02) This module provides a Fast Ethernet uplink, 100BaseT switching to the SmartSwitch Bus, and up to 24 ports (7C03) with redundant uplinks or up to 48 ports (7C04/7C04_R) with redundant uplinks. 7C04 WorkGroup Chassis FDDI Switch Module (7F06-02) This module provides an FDDI Port Interface Module (FPIM), front panel DAS connections, and up to six separate FDDI segments to be switched within a SmartSwitch. These applications may vary depending on the configuration of a particular device. The view you see will display the applications supported by the device associated with the IP address used to model that device in SPECTRUM. Some of the applications are common to all or most devices and are described in the Application Views reference documentation for that type (example: MIB-II). The device-specific applications or those not commonly used are described under the Icon Subviews section. Performance View SPECTRUM Model Types This view (Figure 10) displays statistical information about the device, ports or interfaces on the device, and applications which run on the device. The Performance view will display different statitistical information depending on the Device type, technology, or interface type. Each icon displays the following information: Slot Number Displays the location of the module within the chassis. Model Type Label Displays the type of network interface module. Interface Labels These labels display the following information: Interface Number Label - The number identifying this interface on the module. Interface Status Label - The status of this interface on the module. They also provide menu access (through the Configuration selection) to the Configuration dialog box which allows you to enable or disable the port. Network Interface Module Icons FDDI Switch Module (7F06-02) This icon representing the 7F06-02 module displays the information listed under the Network Interface Modules section and the following additional information: FDDI Ring Label This label represents the front panel FDDI connection, and provides double-click access to the Ring Performance view. FDDI Port Label The FDDI Switch module (7F06-02), Figure 13, contains FDDI Port labels, consisting of three areas of information pertaining to the network interface module ports. These areas are as follows: Port Number Label - Identifies the port on the ring. Ring Identification Label - Identifies the ring the port is connected to (A or B). 22 Icons Network Information Label The Network Information label displays a userselectable network information field. You can select the field to display (Network Address, Name, or Subnet Mask) using the interface options panel. The default field is the Network Address. Double-click this label to access the Secondary Address Panel described in the SPECTRUM Views documentation. Gauge Label The Gauge label displays the color of the statistic selected for the Interface icon from the Gauge Control Panel described in the SPECTRUM Views documentation and provides double-click access to the Performance view. 24 Icon Subviews This section provides general descriptions of the Configuration and application-specific views that display MIB information for the SmartSwitche 7000 Series. The Configuration views allow you to access network configuration information for the device and its interfaces or ports. The 7000 Series SmartSwitches support the following Configuration views: Port Configuration - CSIIf Port FddiMAC Device Configuration View FDDI Port Configuration View FDDI Stats View The application-specific views available for the SmartSwitch 7000 provide information for the applications running on an individual device. These views are accessible from the Application icons or Application labels displayed on the Device view icons. The following applicationspecific views are described in this section: Fddi Station List View Device Configuration View This view provides the following Device configuration information and operating status: Contact Status This field indicates if a connection with the device has been established. Interface Configuration Table Number of Interfaces Displays the number of interfaces available from this device. Index Displays a number identifying the port. Type Displays the type of hardware interface for the port. Phy Address Displays the physical (MAC) address of the port. Device Management Page 24 SmartSwitch 7000

25 Icon Subviews Max Frame Size Displays the maximum frame size for the SmartSwitch network interface modules. Oper Status Displays the current operational state of this port. Possible values are Up,Down, and Testing. Port Configuration - CSIIf Port This view displays port-specific MIB information for this device. Access this view from the Icon Subviews menu for the Interface icon. Interface Index Displays a number identifying the port. Interface Type Displays the type of interface for the port; for example, FDDI. Operation Status Displays the current operating state of the port. Possible values are On, Off, and Test. Admin Status Provides a button that allows you to change the current administrative state of the port. Possible values are On, Off, and Test. IF Description Displays a description of the interface. Port Configuration - CSIIf Port FddiMAC Device Configuration View This view provides information on the configuration and operating status of the device. Access this view using one of the following methods: Highlight the FddiMAC Icon and from the Icon Subviews menu select Configuration. Highlight the FDDI Ring label in the Chassis Device view and from the Icon Subviews menu select FDDI Configuration. Station Configuration This area of the FddiMAC Device Configuration view provides information specific to the FDDI station: Ring State Displays the current state of the FDDI Ring. Table 10 lists the possible states and their descriptions. MAC Configuration Displays the actual configuration of the station. Table 11 lists the possible configurations and their descriptions. 26 Icon Subviews Current MAC Path Displays the ring that this station resides on. Possible values are Primary, Secondary, Local and Isolated. MAC Address Displays the MAC address of this station. MAC Count Displays the number of MAC addresses supported by this station. Non Master Ports Displays the number of non-master ports on this station. Master Ports Displays the number of master ports on this station. SMT Information This area of the FddiMAC Device Configuration view provides the following configuration information on the FDDI SMT: SMT Version Displays the version of Station Management (SMT) running. OBS Present Indicates whether an Optical Bypass Switch (OBS) is connected. FddiMAC Device Configuration View T-Notify (sec) Displays the timer value, in seconds, used in Neighbor Notification Protocol. The allowed range is from 2 to 30 seconds. T-Req (milli sec) Displays the Target Token Rotation Time (TTRT) bid, in milliseconds, made by this concentrator. T-Neg (milli sec) Displays the winning TTRT bid, in milliseconds, on the ring. TVX (milli sec) Displays the valid transmission time, in milliseconds. Ring States Isolated Non-Op Ring-Op Table 10: FDDI Ring States Description The concentrator is not attached to the ring. This indicates a potential problem. The ring failed to complete the claim/beacon process because a duplicate FDDI address has been detected. The ring is operational, but a duplicate FDDI address has been detected. The claim/beacon process did not complete within 9 seconds. The concentrator is now sending directed beacons to indicate a problem. A problem has been detected with the station or its upstream neighbor. A trace is being sent to notify the upstream neighbor of the problem. The concentrator and all stations between the concentrator and its upstream neighbor can perform self-tests. The A port is inserted into a local path and the B port is not. The B port is inserted into a local path and the A port is not. Both A and B are inserted into a local path. The S port is inserted into a local path. The secondary path is wrapped to the A port. The secondary path is wrapped to the B port. The primary path is wrapped to the B port and the secondary path is wrapped to the A port. The primary port is wrapped to the S port. The primary and secondary paths are joined internally in the station and wrapped to the A port. Regarding token flow, all resources on the secondary path precede those of the primary path. The secondary path enters the B port and emerges from the A port. FDDI Port Configuration View This view provides information on the configuration and operating status of the ports. To access this view, click on the FDDI Port icon in the Chassis Device view and select Port Configuration View from the Icon Subviews menu. Port Management FDDI Port Configuration View This section of the FDDI Port Configuration view provides the following information: Port Action Provides a button that allows you to enable or disable the port. The state returns to Other once the port has been Enabled or Disabled. Port State Displays the status of this port. Possible values are disabled, connecting, standby, and active. Port Type Displays the type of port. Possible port types are A_Port, B_Port, Slave, and Master. Link Error Rate Estimate Displays the link error rate estimate is a cumulative long-term average of the bit error rate, which represents the quality of the physical link. The link error rate estimate is computed when the port is connected and every 10 seconds thereafter. It ranges from 10-4 to and is reported as a whole integer. For example, if the port s link error rate estimate is computed to be 10-5, the value reported in this field would be 5, which represents an actual rate of 1,250 bit errors per second. A lower link error rate estimate indicates a higher bit error rate as shown in Figure 16. Device Management Page 28 SmartSwitch 7000

29 Icon Subviews Link Error Monitor Count Displays the aggregate link error monitor count. This count is set to zero on station power up and increments each time the port detects an error. An increasing link error monitor count usually indicates a problem with the connectors or the cable between this port and the node. Link Error Rate Cutoff Displays the link error rate threshold at which a link connection is marked as faulty and the port disabled by SMT. The default link error rate cutoff threshold is 7, which represents 12.5 bit errors per second. Link Error Rate Alarm Displays the link error rate threshold that, if exceeded, generates an alarm for the port. The default link error rate alarm threshold is 8, which represents 1.25 bit errors per second. Link Error Monitor Reject Count Displays the link error monitor count of the times the link has been rejected. Access the FDDI Station List view from the Icon Subviews menu for the FddiMAC Application icon. Update Use this button to update the contents of the Station Table. 30 Icon Subviews Affects the display of the station addressed, toggling between MAC (Physical) and Canonical (Ethernet). This button displays the format NOT currently selected. Station Address Displays the MAC or Canonical address of this node on the ring. Node Class Displays the type of FDDI ring device. Table 12 describes possible node classes. Ring Topology Displays the current state of this FDDI node. Master Ports Displays the number of master ports on this node. Values range from 0 to 255. Upstream Neighbor Displays the canonical or MAC address of the last node to receive the token before this node. Node Class Station Table 12: FDDI Node Classes Description An FDDI node capable of receiving, transmitting, and repeating data. Table 12: Concentrator FDDI Stats View FDDI Port Configuration View FDDI Node Classes (Continued) An FDDI node that provides attachment points for stations that are not directly connected to the FDDI ring. This view displays the bandwidth statistics of the FDDI ring and basic information about the devices on the ring and FDDI network. To access this view, click on the Fddi MAC application icon (Icon Mode), or text label (List Mode) and select Bandwidth Util from the Icon Subviews menu. Fddi Frames (Frm/Sec) Displays the number of FDDI frames per second for the device. Fddi KBytes (Kb/Sec) Displays the number of FDDI KBytes per second for the device. Fddi Peak KBytes (Kb/Sec) Displays the number of FDDI peak KBytes per second for the device. Time of Peak Displays the time of peak usage in Day:Month:Time:Year format for the device.
