Types of Icons In this section: What are Icons? [page 7] VNM Icon [page 8] Landscape Icons [page 9] Topology Icons [page 10] Network Topology Icons [page 12] Location Icons [page 13] Org-Chart/Services Icons [page 14] Off-Page Reference Icons [page 15] Network Segment and Device Icons [page 16] What are Icons? Icons are graphic representations of models in the SPECTRUM modeling catalog. Icons can represent individual devices, groups of devices, geographic locations, users, landscapes, connections, etc. General information about a model, such as the landscape name or model name and model type name, is visible on the icon. Detailed information about a model is found within various icon subviews which are accessed by clicking on icon double-click zones. Pipes are a special type of icon that represent connections (links) between devices. Icons use color to indicate the condition of the devices they represent. When a device changes condition, the icon changes color and flashes to indicate that a change has occurred. Some alarm colors can be set not to flash. See Defining SPECTRUM Resources (2559) for information on changing the iconflashwhengreen resource. The Acknowledge command in the Icon Subviews menu stops the flashing. Live links, like other icons, use color to indicate condition; however, unlike other icons, they do not flash to indicate a change in status. If you are unable to discern colors, a sound script providing an audible indication of an icon s status can be run. A major benefit of icons is that they provide quick access to views. By right-clicking an icon, you can display the Icon Subviews menu. From this menu you can select one of many subviews presenting information about Page 7
the icon. Alternately, you can use an icon s double-click zones to open subviews directly, without selecting them from a menu. An icon changes its functionality and definition according to the mode SPECTRUM is in. When SPECTRUM is in Navigate mode, an icon represents a device, a network group, or a location. When SPECTRUM is in Edit mode, an icon is merely a graphic image that can be manipulated. In Edit mode, normal icon navigation features, such as double-click zones, are not functional. Dynamic icon labels provide a fly-by description of a device or connection icon whenever the mouse pointer is positioned over the icon and not moved for a few seconds. There are many different types of SPECTRUM icons. The icons available depend on the SPECTRUM management modules installed. The following sections discuss the most frequently used SPECTRUM icons. VNM Icon The topology hierarchy contains only one Virtual Network Machine (VNM). An example of the VNM icon is shown in Figure 1. VNM Off-Page Reference icons may appear throughout the lower layers of network groups and subnet work groups. These Off-Page References represent VNM connectivity to individual devices within the network. The VNM icon is normally placed in a topology view above the network group icons that the VNM is modeling. For a more detailed explanation of the SPECTRUM hierarchy, see SPECTRUM Views (2517). When the available disk space in the drive partition containing SpectroSERVER reaches 90%, the background color of the VNM icon changes to orange. Figure 1: VNM Icon (Topology Views Only) Model Name My VNM VNM Page 8
Landscape Icons Each Landscape icon represents a remote SpectroSERVER to which SpectroGRAPH is connected. Landscape icons can be added anywhere in the three view hierarchies (location, topology, and organization) to provide a link between landscapes. The landscape icon shows a summary of alarm information from the associated SpectroSERVER and allows you to navigate from one landscape to another. The icon also shows the status of the connection to the remote SpectroSERVER by the color of its icon symbol. Figure 2 shows an example of a landscape icon. For a more detailed explanation of the SPECTRUM hierarchy, see SPECTRUM Views (2517). Figure 2: Landscape Icon Model Name Landscape A 4 Icon Symbol 1 7 Landscape Model Type Page 9
Topology Icons The topology level represents your network based on device connections. Topology icons come in various shapes and sizes.topology icon features vary depending on the icon and on the view in which the icon is located. There are four main types of topology icons: Network Group Icons Represent network groupings such as cable groups, networks, LANs, IP Class A, B, C networks, etc. Figure 3 shows a Large Network Group icon and a Small Network Group icon and indicates the location of the model name and model type. Figure 3: Network Group Icons Model Name Network A Network B LAN_802_3 Large Network Group Icon (Topology View) Model Type LAN_802_3 Small Network Group Icon (DevTop & Cablewalk Views) Large Device Icons Represent individual devices such as bridges and multi-slot devices such as hubs. Figure 4 shows a large device icon and indicates the location of the model name and model/device type. Figure 4: Large Device Icon (Location Views) Model Name Hub A ESXW Model or Device Type This area displays the Device Type when a device type exists for this model. If a Device Type does not exist, this area displays the Model Type. Page 10
Small Device Icons Represent individual devices. Figure 5 shows a small device icon and indicates the location of the model name and model/device type. Figure 5: Small Device Icons Model Name Device A ESXW Model or Device Type This area displays the Device Type when a device type exists for this model. If a Device Type does not exist, this area displays the Model Type. End-Point Device Icons Represent devices such as host computers, workstations, and PCs (Pingable). Figure 6 shows an end-point device icon and indicates the location of the model name and model/device type. Figure 6: End-Point Device Icons Model Name Device B Host_Sun Model or Device Type This area displays the Device Type when a device type exists for this model. If a Device Type does not exist, this area displays the Model Type. Page 11
Network Topology Icons Network Topology icons represent the various types of networks. Figure 7 illustrates several network topology icons. Figure 7: Network Topology Icons FDDI LAN_802_3 Large-Network Group Icon LAN_802_5 LAN Off-Page Reference Icon IPClassA IPClassB IPClassC LAN WA_Link Topology Icon Page 12
Location Icons Location icons are used in Location views to identify a physical locale. Such a locale might be a country, a region, a building, a floor, a room, an equipment rack, or an equipment panel. Location icons are placed on backgrounds called rasters. Background rasters include maps, floor plans, and room interiors. You can create and import your own backgrounds. Since Location views are hierarchical, a location icon indicates a location within which additional layers of detail can be found. The color of the circle at the base of a location container icon indicates the rollup condition of the location model the icon represents. To open a lower level of detail for a location icon, double-click the container icon s flag. A location icon is shown in Figure 8. Figure 8: Location Icon Flag portion of icon indicates icon name. Icon Condition status is indicated by the orange color of the flag outline. Location Icon Rollup Condition status is indicated by the color of the circle at the icon s base. Page 13
Org-Chart/Services Icons The Org-Chart/Services view icons display the model name and model type as shown in Figure 9. Oval icons in this view represent corporate groupings such as departments, divisions, subsidiaries, work groups, and individuals. Square icons in this view represent network device groupings that belong to a particular service, group, or individual within an organization. When a network device is depicted within an Org_Owns or Service_Owns container icon in an Org-Chart/Services view, the device is represented by a large device icon. Figure 9: Org-Chart/Services Icons Model Name Model Name Model Type Model Type Model Name Model Type Corporate Groupings Icon Org_Owns and Service_Owns Icons Page 14
Off-Page Reference Icons The Off-Page Reference Icon is a special-purpose topology icon. It represents a device that is directly connected to the current level of view but is modeled in another view. The model name appears at the top of the Off-Page Reference Icon, as shown in Figure 10. Below are two situations in which an Off-Page Reference Icon is used: Situation 1: Two subnetworks are connected together via a bridge. If entering the Topology view of either subnetwork, an Off-Page Reference Icon appears representing the bridge. Situation 2: Two subnetworks are connected directly together. If entering the Topology view of either subnetwork, an Off-Page Reference Icon appears representing the other subnetwork. Off-Page Reference Icons are also used in the DevTop view where they indicate devices not yet connected to specific ports of the device being viewed. The views associated with an Off-Page Reference Icon are accessed through the Icon Subviews menu of the View menu. Figure 10: Typical Off-Page Reference Icon Model Name Page 15
Network Segment and Device Icons The following icons, shown in Figure 11, are used to graphically represent software conceptual models of a network. These icons allow users to access information on a network device, such as configuration information or network statistics. 30 Icon Labels In this section: Icon Symbols [page 30] Dynamic Icon Labels [page 32] Icon Symbols The icon symbol identifies the model type the icon represents. Examples of typical icon symbols are illustrated in Figure 26. Examples of network icon symbols are illustrated in Figure 27 [page 31]. The icon symbol background color indicates the device condition. The next section discusses the meaning of the various condition colors an icon can display. For information on how SPECTRUM derives condition colors, see Defining SPECTRUM Resources (2559). Figure 26: Typical Icon Symbols Bridges Hubs Routers Workstation Ping? 32 Dynamic Icon Labels Dynamic icon labels (Figure 28), a short description of an icon or pipe, are displayed in a popup window next to the mouse pointer if certain conditions are met. Icon labels are displayed if zoom is set to less than a certain level and the mouse pointer positioned over an icon is not moved for a certain length of time. Link labels are displayed after a certain length of time regardless of the zoom level. By default, icon lables are displayed if the zoom level is 100% or less and the mouse pointer is not moved for one second. Link labels are displayed if the mouse pointer is not moved for one second. You can disable both icon and link labels and adjust the zoom level at which icon labels are enabled by changing the *iconlabeltimeout and *iconlabelzoomstart resources. See Defining SPECTRUM Resources (2559) for information about how to change these resources. 33 Icon Conditions In this section: Icon Condition Indicators [page 33] Icon Color Zones [page 34] Condition and Rollup Condition Colors [page 35] Derivation of Maintenance (Brown) Condition Color [page 35] Derivation of Unknown (Gray) Condition Color [page 36] Icon Rollup Condition [page 37] Live Pipes [page 37] Icon Condition Indicators SPECTRUM informs you of changes in the condition of remote landscapes by displaying colors in two areas on an icon. One area indicates the condition of the connection to the remote landscape. The other area indicates a rollup condition of alarms. The landscape icon color zones used to display colors are shown in Figure 29. Figure 29: Landscape Icon Condition Color Zones Remote Landscape Alarm Summary Color Area The three zones in this area represent alarms of certain types. The top zone is for critical (red) alarms. The middle zone is for major (orange) alarms. The bottom zone is for minor (yellow) alarms. The number in each zone indicates the number of alarms of that type. If there are no alarms associated with a particular type, the zone will be green. Model Name Landscape Condition of Connection to Remote Landscape Color Area This area is normally multicolored, however, if connection is lost with the remote landscape identified by Model Name, it turns red. Page 33
Icon Color Zones SPECTRUM also informs you of changes in the condition of network devices by displaying colors in up to two zones on an icon. One color zone indicates device or network group condition and the other color zone indicates device or network group rollup condition. The icon color zones are shown in Figure 30. Figure 30: Network Device Condition and Rollup Condition Color Zones Condition Color Zones Location Rollup Condition Color Zones Page 34
Condition and Rollup Condition Colors Condition colors reflect the status of the model represented by the icon. Rollup condition reflects the composite status of models contained within another model, such as a network group model. An icon s Condition is represented by a color. For device and network group icons, the color appears as the background for the icon s label. For location container icons, the color appears in the circle at the icon s base. If devices do not return 100% good condition, rollup condition thresholds determine the rollup condition color displayed by the network group icon. Rollup thresholds are set by the network administrator and covered in detail in the SPECTRUM Concepts Guide (0467). Table 1 shows the SPECTRUM condition icon colors and the alarm severity they signify. Table 1: SPECTRUM Icon Severity Colors Color Severity Meaning Blue Initial Initial condition. No contact with device since model was created or since SpectroSERVER was restarted. Green Normal Contact established. Normal operation. Yellow Minor First level of marginal operation. Can also indicate a model may have a duplicate IP address. Orange Major Second level of marginal operation. May indicate a firmware failure or a management problem. Red Critical Contact with device has been lost. Critical status. Gray Suppressed Device cannot be reached due to an unknown error condition or polling has been turned off. Brown Maintenance Port or device model is off-line for maintenance. Derivation of Maintenance (Brown) Condition Color The Maintenance condition (Brown) appears when the device model is in a suspended management or a maintenance mode. Page 35
Derivation of Unknown (Gray) Condition Color This section describes how the Unknown condition (gray) could appear in a network group model icon. When SPECTRUM first builds the network model, all icons are blue since no initial contact has been made with devices. Once devices are polled and responses received, icons appear green to indicate good condition. In Figure 31, initial contact is made with hub 4. Subsequently, however, contact is lost with hub 4, so the color condition changes from green to red. Since SPECTRUM cannot contact the PCs below this hub, all of these PCs display a gray condition color signifying an unknown condition. Once SPECTRUM regains contact with the hub, the condition of the PCs will be updated to indicate the actual status of each PC. Figure 31: Example of Gray (Suppressed) Icon Color Status Yellow Network 1 Green Network 2 Orange Network 3 Green Hub 3 Red Hub 4 Green Hub 1 Green Hub 2 Gray PC 1 Gray PC 2 Gray PC 3 Page 36
Icon Rollup Condition Rollup condition indicates the composite status of models configured or collected by a parent model. In a Topology view, models whose condition rolls up to a parent model have a collects relation to the parent model. In Location views, models whose condition rolls up to a parent model have a contains relation to the parent model. For example, a network group icon usually represents a collection of device icons. A room location icon usually contains device icons. The rollup condition displayed by a network group icon and a room location icon is determined by the condition of the individual icons collected or contained within the network group or room icon. For device and network icons, the rollup condition color appears in the icon s topology double-click zone. For location icons, the circle at the icon s base indicates rollup condition, providing that the rollup condition is more critical than the icon condition normally indicated in this circle. The rollup condition color displayed by an icon depends on many variables, as well as on how the system administrator sets rollup threshold values. For a detailed discussion on the derivation of rollup condition and colors, see Defining SPECTRUM Resources (2559). Live Pipes Live pipes display the status of a link via a pipe s status color in the topological view. The terms pipe and link are used throughout this discussion. A pipe is a special type of icon that monitors the status of a link. A link is a connection between two devices that has either been resolved to the port level or shows a user defined connection. Live pipe polling is disabled by default. All individual pipes are gold or silver until polling is enabled. To enable a pipe, click a pipe to highlight it and select Enable Live Links from the Icon Subviews menu. In the Enable Live Links dialog box, depress the toggle button to indicate that the pipe is live and click OK. To enable multiple pipes, press and hold down SHIFT and click the pipes you want to select. On the View menu, select Enable Live Links. In the Enable Live Links dialog box, depress the toggle button for the pipes you want to enable. Click OK to enable the pipes. Pipes display a combined condition color from the two ports that the link is resolved to. If the pipe is not resolved, the condition status is displayed as Page 37

Listed in order of increasing severity, the conditions are: Pipe Color brown green blue gray red Port Condition disabled good initial unknown bad The order of condition severity is configurable by changing the spectrum resource file. See Defining SPECTRUM Resources (2559) for information about how to modify this file. Pipes that are not yet resolved to a port are displayed as initial. If the pipe represents multiple links, the worst link condition is displayed by the pipe, with severity in the order: red, gray, blue, green, brown. The condition of Page 38
the links is monitored by the pipe so that port condition changes will be auto-updated. Dynamic icon labels display the model information of the link. In addition, if there is more than one link between the two models, the number of connections is displayed. You can double-click the pipe, or select it, then choose Link Information from the Icon Subviews menu, to open the SpectroGRAPH Link Information view (Figure 32). If the pipe is not resolved to the port level, the stack will start at the lowest point the link is resolved to. The pipe between the two ports displays the condition color of the link. If possible, the type of link is also displayed, based on the model-types of the ports. Page 39
If a pipe represents redundant links, an intermediate dialog displays the two links, and allows you to select which port-pair you wish to bring the view up against (Figure 33). When a link between two ports changes its status from good to another condition, an alarm and event are generated against one of the ports in the link. The alarm message will refer the user to an event. The event message will list various information about the link that has the problem. Only the portions of a port, device, or device stack that you have access rights to are displayed in the Link view. Portions not accessible are left empty. Page 40
