Introduction This section introduces the SPECTRUM Device Management documentation for cable modems and cable modem termination systems that comply with the Data Over Cable System Interface Specification (DOCSIS). This introduction to the Device Management documentation for DOCSIS-supported devices contains the following information: Purpose and Scope Required Reading (Page 5) Supported Devices (Page 5) The SPECTRUM Model (Page 5) Purpose and Scope Use this document as a guide for managing the devices on Page 5 with SPECTRUM management module SM-DCS1000. SM-DCS1000 provides device management support for Cable Modems (CM) and Cable Modem Termination Systems (CMTS) that comply with the Data Over Cable System Interface Specification (DOCSIS). Note: Throughout this document, the abbreviation CM refers to Cable Modem and CMTS refers to Cable Modem Termination System. Information specific to SM-DCS1000 is what is primarily included in this document. For general information about device management using SPECTRUM and explanations of SPECTRUM functionality and navigation techniques, refer to the topics listed under Required Reading (Page 5). Device Management Page 4 DOCSIS Devices
Introduction Required Reading Before using this document, you must understand SPECTRUM s features, functions, and navigation techniques as described in the following documents: Getting Started with SPECTRUM for Operators Getting Started with SPECTRUM for Administrators How to Manage Your Network with SPECTRUM SPECTRUM Views SPECTRUM Menus SPECTRUM Icons SPECTRUM Software Release Notice Supported Devices SPECTRUM management module SM-DCS1000 currently lets you model DOCSIS 1.0/1.1 compliant devices. This includes any vendor s Cable Modem or Cable Modem Termination Station that is DOCSIS 1.0 or 1.1 certified. The SPECTRUM Model Required Reading The SM-DCS1000 management module lets you access MIB objects defined in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) IP Over Cable Data Networks (IPCDN) working group for CM and CMTS devices. The DOCSIS Devices management module includes two device model types, DocsisCMTS, (Page 9) which supports CMTSs and DocsisCM, (Page 23) which supports CMs. Note: When migrating from SPECTRUM version to and later, the GnCableModem model type is replaced by the DocsisCM model type. The DocsisCM model type contacts the device at three times the polling interval. See Page 24 for more information. Device Management Page 5 DOCSIS Devices
Introduction The CMTS device models work with SPECTRUM AutoDiscovery to create models that match the type of device. DOCSIS CMs can be modeled only by type via population servers and scripts and should be modeled only from within a Broadband Service Container (BbSrvContainer). See the Modeling Gateway Toolkit Guide, the Broadband Service Containers document, and the Getting Started with SPECTRUM s Cable Broadband Solution document for more information. 23 DocsisCM Model Type This section describes the DocsisCM Model Type for models of DOCSIS cable modems and its associated subviews. DocsisCM is a light-weight device model type used to model a DOCSIS cable modem. Note: Cable Modems should only be modeled from within a Broadband Service Container (BbSrvContainer). See the Broadband Service Containers document for more information about using the SM- BSC1000 Broadband Service Container Management Module to monitor the operating condition of a broadband network. Table 4 lists the Icon Subviews menu options available from the DocsisCM device icon. Table 4: Option Icon Subviews Menu Options Opens the... 24 DocsisCM Model Type Note: By default, no attributes are polled for models of CMs. This is done to conserve upstream bandwidth in network environments where thousands of models may have been created. However, in order to maintain contact with CM devices, SPECTRUM polls SysUpTime at three times the polling interval set for the CM. For example, if polling is set to 5 minutes (the default value), the value of SysUpTime for CMs will be read every 15 minutes. If you enable polling for any attribute, polling will be done at the specified interval and SysUpTime will no longer be polled to maintain contact status. For more information about polling, see the How To Manage Your Network with SPECTRUM document. Configuration View Access: From the Icon Subviews menu for the DocsisCM device icon, select Configuration. This view provides a Model Alarming button, described below. Model Alarming This button lets you enable/disable alarms for this CM. Alarms for CMs are Disabled by default. When alarms are disabled, loss of contact results in the model transitioning to a suppressed state which is reflected by the icon turning gray. This alarm functionality can be enabled either on a per model basis using this button or globally by setting the Enable_Alarms attribute to TRUE in the database. See the Getting Started with SPECTRUM s Cable Broadband Solution document for more information. Device Management Page 24 DOCSIS Devices
DocsisCM Model Type Downstream Channel Table Access: From the Icon Subviews menu for the DocsisCM device icon, select Downstream Channel Table. This table describes the attributes of downstream channels (frequency bands). The table provides the following fields. With the exception of Id, all field values are read-write. Id A number representing the CMTS identification of the downstream channel within this particular MAC interface. If the interface is down, the most current value is displayed. If the downstream channel identification is unknown, the value is 0. Frequency The center of the downstream frequency associated with this channel, i.e., the current tuner frequency, in hertz. If a CMTS provides IF output, the value is 0 unless the CMTS controls final downstream RF frequency. Width The bandwidth of this downstream channel, in hertz. Most implementations support a channel width of 6 MHz (North America) and/or 8 MHz (Europe). Modulation The modulation type associated with this downstream channel. If the interface is down, this field displays the most current value, or the value Unknown. The other possible values are Qam64, Qam256, and Other. Signal Quality Table Access: From the Icon Subviews menu for the DocsisCM device icon, select Signal Quality Table. This table shows the signal quality of downstream channels for a CM. The table may exclude contention intervals. This table provides the following fields, all of which are read-only. Unerroreds The number of code words received on this channel without error. This includes all code words, whether or not they were part of frames destined for this device. Correcteds The number of code words received on this channel with correctable errors. This includes all code words, whether or not they were part of frames destined for this device. Device Management Page 25 DOCSIS Devices
DocsisCM Model Type Uncorrectables The number of code words received on this channel with uncorrectable errors. This includes all code words, whether or not they were part of frames destined for this device. Signal Noise The signal-to-noise ratio (in db*10) as perceived for this channel. It describes the signal-to noise ratio of the downstream channel at the CM. IF Status Table Access: From the Icon Subviews menu for the DocsisCM device icon, select IF Status Table. MAC Address Identifies the CMTS that is believed to control this MAC domain. At the CM, this will be the source address from SYNC, MAP, and other MAC-layer messages. If the CMTS is unknown, this field returns Tx Power The operational transmit power for the attached upstream channel. Resets Number of times the CM reset or initialized this interface. Lost Syncs Number of times the CM lost synchronization with the downstream channel. Inval Maps Number of times the CM received invalid MAP messages. Inval Ucds The number of times the CM received invalid UCD messages. Inval Ranging Resp Number of times the CM received invalid ranging response messages. Inval Reg Resp Number of times the CM received invalid registration response messages. T1, T2, T3, T4 Timeouts The number of times T1, T2, T3, and T4 counters expired in the CM. Ranging Aborts The number of times the ranging process was aborted by the CMTS. Device Management Page 26 DOCSIS Devices
DocsisCM Model Type CM Service Table Access: From the Icon Subviews menu for the DocsisCM device icon, select Service Table. This table describes the attributes of each upstream service queue on a CM. IFIndex.CmSID Identifies a service queue for upstream bandwidth. The attributes of this service queue are shared between the CM and the CMTS. The CMTS allocates upstream bandwidth to this service queue based on requests from the CM and on the class of service associated with this queue. Qos Profile The index in Qos Profile Table describing the quality of service attributes associated with this particular service. If no associated entry in Qos Profile Table exists, this field displays 0. Tx Slots Immed The number of upstream mini-slots that have been used to transmit data PDUs in immediate (contention) mode. This includes only those PDUs that are presumed to have arrived at the head end (i.e., those that were explicitly acknowledged.) It does not include retransmission attempts or mini-slots used by requests. Tx Slots Ded The number of upstream mini-slots that have been used to transmit data PDUs in dedicated mode (i.e., as a result of a unicast Data Grant). Tx Retries The number of attempts to transmit data PDUs containing requests for acknowledgment that did not result in acknowledgment. Tx Exceeded The number of data PDUs transmission failures due to excessive retries without acknowledgment. Rq Retries The number of attempts to transmit bandwidth requests that did not result in acknowledgment. Rq Exceeded The number of requests for bandwidth that failed due to excessive retries without acknowledgment. Device Management Page 27 DOCSIS Devices
DocsisCM Model Type Service Level Purchase Table Access: From the Icon Subviews menu for the DocsisCM device icon, select Service Level Purchase Table. Qos Profile Index The index in the Qos Profile Table which can be matched with an IFIndex.CmSID in the CM Service Table (Page 27). Profile Status This field is used to create or delete rows in this table. Note: This field must not be changed from active while the row is referenced by any entry in either the CM Service Table or the CMTS Service Table. Guar Up Bandwidth Minimum guaranteed upstream bandwidth, in bits per second, allowed for a service with this service class. Note: This field must not be changed while this row is active.
