This overview provides the following information: MULTICAx Pro/Engineer P and PD Plug-in in a Nutshell Before Reading this Guide Getting the Most Out of this Guide Accessing Sample Documents Conventions Used in this Guide MULTICAx Pro/Engineer P and PD Plug-in in a Nutshell The MULTICAx Pro/Engineer P and PD Plug-in allow users to import Pro/Engineer (ProE) native parts and assembly models into V5. ProE part geometry is converted into the CATIA Graphical Representation (CGR) or V5 Part (CATPart) format, while ProE assembly files are imported into a V5 product structure document (CATProduct). Users may perform this import either: Interactively (for all V5 platforms) From a command line (all V5 platforms except 3d com) Before Reading this Guide Prior to reading the MULTICAx Pro/Engineer P and PD Plug-in User's Guide, you are recommended to have a look at the Infrastructure User's Guide for information on the generic capabilities common to all products. Getting the Most Out of this Guide To make the most out of this book, we suggest that a beginning user reads the Requirements chapter first of all and the other Users Tasks to find his way around the MULTICAx Pro/Engineer P and PD Plug-in. Accessing Sample Documents To perform the scenarios, sample documents are provided all along this documentation. For more information about this, refer to Accessing Sample Documents in the Infrastructure User's Guide.

What's New? New Functionalities The MULTICAx Pro/Engineer PD Plug-in is available on UNIX WildFire is supported in direct mode. Enhanced Functionalities Update Status Checker Interactive update is now available.

User Tasks Requirements Methodologies and Advice Initializing the Environment Importing ProE Data Translating Files from the Command Line Improved Associativity Support on Multi-CAD Data Using ProE Part Simplified Representation and Instance Name

Requirements Never modify data generated in V5: information could be lost and the MULTICAD Update could result in incorrect results. Part Number must be unique, all parts with the same name are considered as identical. On Windows, make sure the files to translate are not encrypted: push the Advanced button in the Properties dialog box of the file and uncheck the Encrypt contents to secure data option.

The MULTICAx Pro/Engineer PD Plug-in allow users to import Pro/Engineer (ProE) native parts and assembly models into V5. ProE part geometry is converted into the CATIA Graphical Representation (CGR) or V5 Part (CATPart) format, while ProE assembly files are imported into a V5 product structure document (CATProduct). You may perform this import either: Interactively (for all V5 platforms) From a command line (all V5 platforms except 3d com) General information Converted surfaces may be in the form of: ProE solid surfaces Surfaces imported into ProE from formats such as IGES or the ProE quilt set of surfaces (which are imported based on a user-indicated option in case of cgr conversion). Native ProE parts and assemblies can be interactively imported. V5 data (CATProduct, CGR, and CATPart files) generated through the command line can be interactively imported as well. The assembly import converts the ProE assembly hierarchy into product structure, along with the proper positions. Simplified Representations and Part Instances, when present, may be optionally imported when using a ProE license. No attributes of the assembly other than hierarchy, positions, and colors of the geometry are addressed in assembly import. ProE part files must have a.prt.* extension (with or without the version number). With the version number, the extension must be.prt.n, n being a numerical value. ProE assembly files must have a.asm.* extension (with or without the version number). With the version number, the extension must be.asm.n, n being a numerical value. A product structure document (either new or previously created) must be visible to import data interactively. When importing ProE part geometry, MULTICAx PD Plug-in converts all solid bodies belonging to visible layers in the ProE part into the CGR-faceted form, with user-specified tessellation parameters. In addition, parts can optionally be imported in the CATPart data format, with full support for exact geometry. Coordinate systems can also be retrieved in the generated CGR and CATPart files. Any part user attributes defined in the original part are stored in the CATProduct or CATPart document. Batch Conversion The batch conversion directly generates CATProduct documents for imported assemblies, and CGR or CATPart files for parts. Protocols and attributes The following protocols or attributes apply to batch conversions:

Length units for both parts and assemblies are converted to millimeters. Assembly-level colors and other features are not supported. Pure wire frame data and coorsys are not supported during the conversion. Text and annotations are not supported. Parts and sub-assemblies residing in invisible layers will not be converted. Cable elements are not supported. Direct mode MULTICAx ProE currently supports ProE files up to versions 2001 and Wildfire. This program has the following limitations: No support for drawing import. Support of Part instances and simplified representation requires.xpr and.xas files to be present. Support of Part instances requires.xpr and.xas files to be in the same directory as the ProE file. Instance name must be in uppercase in the Tools/Option/General/Compatibility tab (as it is in ProE). 9 Methodologies and Advice This section provides information that users should be familiar with prior to configuring and using MULTICAx Pro/Engineer PD Plug-in. It also offers advice regarding when these technologies should be used. Output Formats Importing ProE data into V5 results in a conversion of the imported data to one of three formats, selectable by the user. Depending on how the imported data will be used, the user can choose whether to create CGR, CGR with canonical information or CATPart data. Each of these formats allow for access to part user attributes (via the Edit -> Properties menu command): Clash detection Inertia and Volume calculations Each format has its own advantages and limitations: CGR (Visu mode). CATIA Graphical Representation is the visualization format of CATIA V5. With this very light format, you can do approximate measurement and have access to all the basic DMU functionalities. CGR with canonical information which enable exact measurement and exact snapping (Visu Snap mode) CATPart (CATPart mode). It is a standard V5 CATPart, therefore you can use it as any other CATPart. As the associative mode is specific to Multi-CAD data, it is advised to use publications before putting a link onto the Part. Otherwise, your link would be broken as soon as the CATPart is re-generated after the original CAD Part modification. Supported Features Access to part user attributes (via Edit -> Properties) Move Exact positioning (Snap command) when using CATPart mode Clash detection (on CGR) Approximate measurements (or exact measurement with CATPart) Inertia and volume calculations Limitations Exact measuring not fully supported in Exact Geometry mode Other exact geometric features supported only by CATPart (assembly constraints, kinematics) Analysis limitations on exact geometry: Inertia and volume calculations and clash detections must be done on the CGR data (cache activated and tests in visualization mode)

VDA-FS files which contain POLYGON entity type are not supported. If the ProE data contains any global references then these will be transferred during the translation. If the ProE files associated with these links are not present then they will be displayed as missing links (As viewed through File -> Desk option). Error reporting Whenever you import a ProE part or assembly file, V5 creates a report in the CATReport directory. The report is found in a file titled part_name.txt or assembly_name.txt. Environment The ideal working environment makes use of the following: Cache mode ON (set through Tools -> Options -> Infrastructure -> Product Structure -> Cache Management) File format: CGR for users that need better performance and do not require exact positioning (or exact measuring) CATPart for users that need the additional features provided by the CATPart format (such as exact measurement, exact positioning, kinematics, etc.) Using CATPart Geometry Mode vs Visu Mode The MULTICAx PD Plug-in Plug-in support CATPart mode, allowing for ProE parts to be imported as CATPart data files. In this mode, ProE part data contained by the solid body is transferred into a CATPart. Because CATPart files are large and take more time to convert, CATPart mode management is an optional feature. CATPart features and limitations The features and limitations of Multi-CAD CATParts are identical to those of all other V5 CATParts. When to use the exact geometry mode

Exact geometry is used when exact positioning and exact measuring are required. You should be aware that the conversion to the CATPart format requires more time than only generating the CGR (faceted) format. In addition, CATPart files are larger than their corresponding CGR files. Therefore, it is recommended that CATPart mode is only enabled if exact positioning, exact measurement or putting constraints is required.

Initializing the Environment When installing the MultiCAx media, all the references will be made to CATIA. This is not a problem and will not affect the product behavior. But it will create shortcuts and environment with CATIA names. Initializing the Environment for Direct Mode The section titled External Formats describes how to set the conversion configuration interactively.

Initializing the Environment for Indirect Mode Not available.

Initializing the Environment for Direct Mode The section titled External Formats describes how to set the conversion configuration interactively. In order to specify the SAG to use for cgr creation, you need to set the "3D Fixed Accuracy" in the tab Tools/Options/General/Display/Performances. In effect, even if the setting is set to "Proportional 3D accuracy", we will use the "3D Fixed Accuracy" value. For proper use of Direct Mode, please export the following variable: CATCCLIC_IDP=IDP.prd

Importing ProE Data Importing a ProE File Interactively Importing ProE Data Interactively in VPM

Importing a ProE File Interactively The following procedures describe how to import ProE parts or assemblies into a product structure document. The ProE part files must have the.prt or.prt.x extension (where x is a number). The ProE assembly files must have the.asm.* extension. See also the Protocols and attributes section. When assembly files are converted interactively, the conversion requires only one step; the conversion of an intermediary layout file is not required as it is with command line conversions. 1. Open an empty or existing product structure document. 2. On the product structure document, use the right mouse button to select the product under which the ProE part is to be imported. A menu appears. 3. Select Existing Component. A dialog box appears, such as the one shown below.

4. Set the file type to *.prt (for.prt files) or.prt.* (for.prt.x files) or.asm.* and navigate to the directory where the desired part or assembly files are present. 5. Select the part or assembly file to be imported. Click the Open button. The selected part or assembly appears under the selected product in the product structure. In the example below, the product selected in step 2 was Complete.1 (highlighted in orange) ; the part selected in step 5 was finish.prt.

In the example below, Product 1 was the product selected in step 2; auto.asm was the assembly selected in step 4. An alternative method to performing steps 2 and 3 is to select the product with the left mouse button, then, from the menu bar, select Insert->Existing Component.

Importing ProE Data Interactively in VPM This task shows you how to import data Interactively into VPM A V5 application (ENOVIA DMU, ENOVIA 3d com, CATIA or DELMIA) has to be installed correctly. We will not describe in this section how to set-up the Multi-CAD server (XCAD) on VPM. For any information please report to the VPM Documentation (Customizing Multi-CAD). ProE parts must have a.prt extension. Only single parts can be imported. 1. Check-in ProE parts into VPM: 2. Ensure that the VPM XCAD server set-up on your VPM installation is well configured. 3. Modify the V5 environment (ENOVIA DMU, ENOVIA 3d com, CATIA or DELMIA) in order to connect V5 to ProE as explained in the Environment Documentation. 4. Launch the XCAD server. 5. Launch VPM. 6. Check-in *.prt file by using Create&Save. 7. Check-in ProE parts into VPM: After check-in you can send the unique cgr to V5. Updating checked-in documents: The Update Representations function can be used with ProE *.prt files.

Importing ProE data in 3d com This section applies to ENOVIA DMU or ENOVIA 3d com.

Interactively loading a ProE file into DMU via 3d com This section applies to ENOVIA DMU or ENOVIA 3d com.

Translating Files from the Command Line This procedure describes how to run the CATDMUUtility batch program to import ProE files from the command line. The CATDMUUtility is a batch process enabling the generation of.catproduct,.cgr and CATPart formats from ProE files. Typical arguments and command switches passed to the CATDMUUtility batch are as follows: Converting a ProE part to a V5 cgr file CATDMUUtility -f InputPartFile -cgr OutputCgrFile Converting a ProE part to a V5 CATPart file CATDMUUtility -f InputPartFile -part OutputPartFile Converting a ProE assembly to a V5 CATProduct file CATDMUUtility -f InputProductFile -product OutputCATProductFile Options Input and output options that can be used with CATDMUUtility are described below. Input Options -f Input file with appropriate extension. A path must follow this option. For ProE parts, the file extension should be.prt.*, for ProE assemblies it should be.asm.* Output Options -cgr -part -product Output file for cgr corresponding to a part input file. Output file for CATPart corresponding to a part input file. Output file for CATProduct corresponding to the ProE assembly input file. Other options The other options available for conversion are settings which correspond to the environment. These are defined in Tools -> Options -> General -> Compatibility -> External Formats. In particular, the use of cgr or CATPart can be customized in these options. For more information, see Customizing External Format Import in the Infrastructure User's Guide. How to run the batch

In a command prompt window, the conversion batch is launched by entering the following command: (CATIA.V5R8.B08 is an example, the syntax remains the same but the chain of characters will vary with the release installed on your computer) On Windows "C:\<install_dir>\intel_a\code\bin\CATDMUUtility.exe" -env CATIA.V5R8.B08 - direnv "C:\Winnt\Profiles\All Users\Application Data\Dassault Systemes\CATEnv" - f E:\tmp\assembly_file.asm -product E:\tmp\prod1.CATProduct On UNIX <install_dir>/<os>_a/code/command/catstart -env CATIA.V5R8.B08 -direnv /CATEnv -run "CATDMUUtility -f /tmp/assembly_file.prt -product /tmp/prod1.catproduct" Where -env... is the default environment and -direnv... is the directory path containing this environment. Please note that this conversion will take into account the settings in Tools -> Options -> General -> Compatibility -> External Formats.

Improved Associativity Support on Multi-CAD Data This section describes the concept of associative mode and how it works. How associative mode works When the conversion batch (CATDMUUtility) is run on ProE data, ProE files are converted and stored in V5. However, the sources of the part files are not visible to the user, and the CGR files are not placed in cached memory-only the 3D view can be seen by the user. When a batch conversion is performed on an assembly, the assembly is transferred into a CATProduct file in the V5 format. Each individual part contained in the assembly is converted to a CGR or CATPart. During this conversion, the assembly structure, geometrical information and original links are all transferred into the V5 format. After the conversion, the CATProduct reproduces the 3D View of the original assembly and also stores a link to the original files. The established link will enable the Multi-CAD update batch to determine whether the imported V5 files are up to date compared with their original data. The following schema draws a parallel between the CAD system and V5. Step 3 corresponds to the modification or review of imported CAD data in V5. From the import of CAD data to the synchronization of the V5 session The update batch (CATMCIReplace) is used to initiate the associative mode. This batch operates on V5 data to update the structure or geometry according to any changes made to the original data by the ProE designer.

If a ProE part file has been modified, the update batch can be run on the CATProduct so that the part file (i.e., not the whole assembly structure) is reconverted and the V5 geometry of the ProE part is always up to date. The part can also be subsequently manipulated in V5. If only the ProE assembly structure has been modified, the batch can be run on the CATProduct so that the assembly file (i.e., not the part file) is reconverted and the V5 product structure is updated. The following schema illustrates the conversion and update processes of an assembly structure when importing CAD data into V5: Multi-CAD conversion and update processes The associative mode is the default mode.

Associative mode is useful when a user wants to maintain synchronization with structure and/or geometry changes. If you prefer to keep your assembly as it was at the moment of the conversion, it is not necessary to launch the batch. If the batch is not used, no synchronization between V5 data and the original ProE data will occur. Using the update batch to maintain associativity This task describes how to convert ProE assemblies into V5 CATProducts, and how to maintain the associativity between modified CAD data and the converted product files in V5. 1. In a command prompt window, the conversion batch is launched by entering the following command: On Windows "C:\<install_dir>\intel_a\code\bin\CATDMUUtility.exe" -env CATIA.V5R8.B08 -direnv "C:\Winnt\Profiles\All Users\Application Data\Dassault Systemes\CATEnv" -f E:\tmp\assembly_file.asm -product E:\tmp\prod1.CATProduct On UNIX <install_dir>/<os>_a/code/command/catstart -env CATIA.V5R8.B08 -direnv /CATEnv -run "CATDMUUtility -f /tmp/ Where -env... is the default environment and -direnv... is the directory path containing this environment. Please note that this conversion will take into account the settings in Tools -> Options -> General -> Compatibility -> External Formats. 2. In the original CAD system, modify a ProE part contained in assembly_file.asm. 3. Launch the update batch by entering the command: On Windows "C:\<install_dir>\intel_a\code\bin\CATMCIReplace.exe" -env CATIA.V5R8.B08 -direnv "C:\Winnt\Profiles\All Users\Application Data\Dassault Systemes\CATEnv" -i E:\tmp\prod1.CATProduct -update On UNIX <install_dir>/<os>_a/code/command/catstart -env CATIA.V5R8.B08 -direnv /CATEnv -run "CATMCIReplace -i /tmp/prod1.catproduct -update" If prod1.catproduct is opened interactively in V5, the geometry modification will be visible. For more information about the CATDMUUtility program, please refer to Running CATDMUUtility Batch Process in the DMU Navigator User Guide.

Using ProE Part Simplified Representation and Instance Name When present, ProE simplified representations may be optionally imported. Using Simplified Representations The name of the desired simplified representation, taken from an existing list of such representations in the ProE assembly, may be indicated from the External Formats page of the Options dialog. Near the bottom of the dialog (in the ProEngineer section) is a checkbox for Simplified Representation, as well as a text box where the name of the simplified representation to be imported may be entered. An example of importing a simplified representation named SIMPREP1 is shown below. In such an import, only the indicated simplified assembly would be converted during the assembly import. If no name is supplied for a simplified representation or a non-existent simplified representation name is indicated, then the simplified representation mode of import will be ignored and the complete assembly import will be performed. Limitations

Currently only assembly/sub-assembly level simplified representations are addressed. Part level simplified assemblies, when present, are not taken into account and the master representation will be converted in such cases. Not available in CATPart mode. The product structure tree will look different compared to the original assembly tree in ProE. Simplified Representations other than Include or Exclude are not supported. Using Instance Name When manipulating a generic ProE Part, the user can insert the default geometry (no specific settings are required) or insert one of the specific instance located in the part. In order to import a specific instance (named INST1 for example) the name retrieved from ProE should be put in the Instance Name field in Tools -> Options prior to the batch or interactive conversion.

Retrieving the Part Number and the Revision Number Not available.

Checking and Updating the Status of Assemblies This task shows you how to check the Update Status of elements of an assembly. This command is available in CGR and CATPart modes. We strongly recommend that you save all documents before launching the command! Modified elements with a time stamp preceding that of the elements checked are not taken into account. 1. Open the Tools > Customize dialog box. Go to the Commands tab and select the All Commands category. 2. In the Commands list, select Update Status Checker and drag and drop the command into a toolbar.

3. Push the Update Status Checker icon and pick a node in the specification tree.

The Update Status Checker checks the status of the components at this node level. If the components are up to date, the light remains green and the message Nothing to update is displayed in the dialog box. If original elements have been modified and the imported elements are not up to date, the light turns red, the elements to update are listed in the dialog box (with their name, location of the original file and date of modification). A message explains how to update the elements.

If you select a line in the To update list, the corresponding element is highlighted in the specification tree. 4. Push the update button. All the elements listed in the To update field are updated. 5. Push Close to exit the action. You can repeat this control on different nodes of the same specification tree, i.e. at different levels of the assembly. The control will start at this level. Note that in CGR mode, as the assembly information are gathered at the root level of the assembly, any update information will refer to this root level whereas in CATPart mode the update information will refer to the actual level of the modification.

Replacing MultiCAD Links This procedure describes how to replace interactively broken MultiCAD links. This can also be done in batch mode, by launching the utility CATMCIReplace -i E:\path_to_product\top.CATProduct without the - update switch. It will automatically replace the broken link. Broken links can occur when : a MultiCAD conversion is launched in batch mode, impacting a document which is referenced by another V5 assembly. a MultiCAD update is performed on a part referenced by another assembly. The conversion changes the unique Id of the updated part, and the referenced document which have the Id saved in the aggregating product no longer exists. Broken links also occur when a file is replaced by another one in the file system, with the same file name (but different Id). The command looks for a document in the current directory which have the same file name as the one stored in the product structure. If the search succeeds, the command replaces all references to the old part by references to the new one in the aggregating product. 1. Open the Tools > Customize dialog box. Go to the Commands tab and select the All Commands category. 2. In the Commands list, select Remove link and drag and drop the command into a toolbar. 3. Push the Remove link icon

Nothing appears if there is no broken link. If a broken link is found and replaced, a dialog box like this appears: If a broken link is found but cannot be replaced, a dialog box like this appears:

Customizing The quality and performances of your export or import data can be improved by choosing the most suitable settings. 1. Select the Tools -> Options command. The Options dialog box displays. 2. Choose the General category in the left-hand box, then Compatibility. 3. Use the arrow to navigate to the tab you need: External Formats

4. Set options in these tabs according to your needs. 5. Click OK when done.
