3 Installing middleware on the MXP Application Server Installation procedure Mobile MXP applications are installed with a common setup windows setup executable. It contains the complete version and is capable of configuring Internet Information Server. No further configuration is required on the server. Execute the provided setup executable on the server and follow instructions: 1. Select Install NEW IIS Application on Install or Update application screen 2. Select a desired folder where the application will be installed. The default path is C:\inetpub\wwwroot\MXP_... and can be modified. We recommend to install the application into MXP folder, like C:\MXP\MXP_... 3 / 14

4 3. Insert the data source string for database access. The default is set to local host.\mxp when the database is on the same server as the IIS. Usually the path is entered with IP address of the database server such as \MXP or with using a domain name such as vmxp\mxp. 4. Select destination IIS Web Site. Setup will attempt to detect the name of the web site in IIS. By default the website in IIS is named Default Web Site. Please verify the web site name in IIS instance and change it in the Web Site field if the name does not match the detected in installer. 4 / 14

5 Application Site Path defines the Application name in IIS. It is the URL subfolder on the server which will be used to access the software. For above settings the url to access the web site application is The Application Pool Name is a friendly name for the dedicated IIS application pool which will be created in the process of installation. It is recommended to leave both values to at default. 5. Verify installation settings and confirm 6. Check if the application now appears in IIS 5 / 14

6 Application verification Below image represents a standard view in a browser. There is an application version number at the bottom of login screen. For above settings the url to access the web site application is when accessing it remotely or when accessing it directly on the server. Updating Application Application can be updated with the same procedure as with installation. Install or Update application screen gives the option to either install a new application or update an application for the list below. The current instance of the application will be selected by default. Updating is safe to execute even during application usage with no down-time. The updating procedure can also be used to change the database data source or other configuration available during installation. 6 / 14

7 Application Folder Contents Final application folder has the following contents: Application Settings MXP mobile applications use a MXP_WOrder.ini file to store configuration in name=value format. Each change in the settings must be followed by restarting the application with recycling the appropriate application pool which reloads the settings. 7 / 14

8 Restarting Application Application is running inside IIS application pool which guarantees safe and gracefull no down-time restarts and application updates. Recommended application restart is made with using IIS Application Pool Recycle task which does the following: - starts a new application instance - keeps the old instance running until it completes all current requests 8 / 14

9 Reinstalling Application To reinstall the application, we must remove two settings from IIS: - delete the application pool MXP WO or WO - delete the application wo under Default Web Site 9 / 14

10 Using Application on Devices Setting up Application Links The mobile applications are HTML5 web pages. This means they run in a web browser such as Google Chrome, Apple Safari or Microsoft Edge like any regular web page. Usually we want to display it on a device in full screen, without showing Address Bar and Navigation Buttons in the browser. We can open the application by using the URL (address link) pointing to the MXP application server. There are several ways to display the application through a shortcut on the device, depending on the device or operating system manufacturer. Most commonly used methods include: - Windows - Google Chrome: Create a Desktop shortcut using through menu More tools / Add to desktop - ios Safari: Create a Home Screen shortcut through Safari menu Add to Home Screen - ios MXP Mobile: Use a native application MXP Mobile to gain access to hardware, such as barcode, RFID or magnetic card readers. See a dedicated chapter within this document. Devices with Hardware Attachments for ipod/ipad require MXP Mobile application. 10 / 14

11 Using MXP Mobile Browsers provide a layer separate from the hardware so the web pages cannot use hardware directly. To bridge this limitation and receive the hardware data we need a special native application running in the system or a browser plugin. Installing MXP Mobile If we require barcode scanning, RFID/NFC reading or magnetic card swiping then an additional hardware is used. To be able to access hardware information we need to use a specific application MXP Mobile which must be installed on the ipod/ipad system. MXP Mobile uses a built-in device web browser to display the mobile/web application and is able to forward captured hardware data to the web application. The application is available on the Apple itunes/app Store and it is called MXP Mobile: Application can be installed directly from App Store, with a provided.ipa file, through a dedicated profile or with the usage of Apple Configurator software. 12 Configuring MXP Mobile for single application If there is a dedicated application to be used through MXP Mobile then follow below steps: 1. Open device Settings 2. Scroll down and find MXP Mobile item and enter it 3. Use the URL field to specify the application link: 12 / 14

13 Configuring multiple applications There are two ways to configure multiple applications running, either with using a Landing Page or by using MXP Mobile configuration, based on condition: 1. Applications are running on the same server: The advised method is to use the landing page of the Intranet application. If there is no Intranet application on this installation then use the WaiterOrder/mPOS url, depends which software is primarily being used on the device. Landing page which appears with above configuration: Use the back button on the Login screen of the applications to return back to the landing page. 2. Applications are running on different servers/locations/ships To run multiple different links you need to use MXP Mobile. (This is a temporary method until the next release of MXP Mobile.) Enter DEMO in the URL field of the MXP Mobile settings and exit them. When the application is restarted a new screen will appear. This screen allows the user to enter, edit or use multiple application links. Add one or more by using the Edit button on the right. After the links are added you can exit the edit mode through Done button. Afterwards you can select and use the links by tapping them. 13 / 14
