2 3 The emedia Catalog is hosted by OverDrive and LVCCLD has selected content just for our patrons. You may borrow up to 35 items at one time. Titles are available 24/7 anytime, anywhere. The emedia Catalog 4 For ebooks epub, PDF with DRM, OePub, OPDF and Mobipocket (this one only works on computers and some older handheld devices) Also available are MP3 audio, WMA audio, MP3 Music WMA Music and WMF Video. One Copy One user same as with the print books in the library. When a copy is checked out it is removed from circulation. Just like the print books you can request items when all copies are checked out. What formats are available?

3 5 You need a computer for dedicated ereaders (tablets and smartphones can be used for some ebooks formats without a computer) You need to be a patron who lives in the North Las Vegas, Boulder City or LVCCLD taxing district with a library card and PIN in good standing. (Henderson has their own OverDrive catalog) Free digital software Access to the Internet to browse, checkout and download files. You can read, view or listen without being connected to the Internet. Getting Started 6 1. Start by clicking on MyHelp! on the left side of the emedia Catalog ( 2. Select Read ebooks 3. Select your ereader Step-by-step

4 7 1. Click View My Help 2. Go to the new window/tab which has opened Setup 8 There are three steps to follow in setting up your computer and ereader so they will talk to each other. Confirm your computer requirements you may need to update your Adobe Flash player and make sure you have JavaScript enabled. Click the instruction links to see how to do these tasks. 5 9 Install Software (Lab computers already have it installed) Homework: Install Adobe Digital Editions on your home computer. How To Install Adobe Digital Editions 1. Open the Adobe Digital Editions download page. 2. Click Install. The Adobe Digital Editions Installer screen is displayed. 3. Click Yes. The Adobe Digital Editions License screen is displayed. 4. To continue, click the I Agree button. Adobe Digital Editions is installed. 5. Adobe Digital Editions opens once installation is complete. Step 2

6 10 How to Authorize Adobe Digital Editions with your Adobe ID For the class, if you already have ADE on your home computer use the Adobe ID you previous created and skip down to the Authorizing Your Computer section. Note for NOOk owners who have registered their Nook to make purchases at Barnes & Noble, your device is already authorized. You should use the same address and password to authorize Adobe Digital Editions on your computer. For the class, those of you who do not have an Adobe ID, follow these steps. Step 3 Whenever you use a new computer or device for ebooks from an OverDrive-powered site, you will be prompted to Authorize. Follow the instructions to complete the steps. Write down your Adobe ID password Create an Adobe ID If you do not have an Adobe ID 1. Open Adobe Digital Editions. 2. Click on I Agree 3. Click Continue 4. Click get an Adobe ID online (located at the end of the first paragraph) 5. Follow the instructions to sign up for an Adobe ID. Fill in only items with a red * 6. Click Create Adobe ID Account. Authorizing Your Computer with your Adobe ID 7. Return to the Activation screen. If needed, reopen the Activation screen from the Library view of Adobe Digital Editions by going to Library > Authorize Computer. 8. Enter the address and password for your Adobe account. 9. Click Activate. Your computer is authorized with your Adobe ID. 10. Click Finish to close the Setup Assistant dialog box. Important: If you would like to transfer an ebook from Adobe Digital Editions to an ebook reader, be sure to authorize your ebook reader using the same Adobe ID. Homework: you will need to authorize your Adobe Digital Edtions on your home computer using the above steps at home and the Adobe ID you created.

Setup - Review 12 ebooks come in two formats: PDF ebooks EPUB ebooks With EPUB, you may change the font size of your ebook, and the text automatically reflows within the display screen. EPUB is perfect for creating an instant large print ebook, or for reading on an ebook reader. In PDF ebooks the text and graphics remain fixed. For larger print, you may zoom in on the text. PDF is ideal for ebooks with many images such as picture books and graphic novels. Which formats work with your ereader? Formats

8 13 Click How It Works Tab Now we are ready to find a book, check it out, download it and transfer it to our ereader. How It Works Go to emedia Catalog There are several ways to access the ebook collections 2. On the left side there are ebook Fiction, ebook NonFiction and Browse Collection 3. Click Browse Collection 4. Click View all emedia Titles Browse

9 15 On this screen you can choose to look at all the epub or PDF titles. Click View all Adobe PDF ebooks titles View All emedia Titles Couple of things to note: 1. Up near the top where it reads Search results it shows the number of titles available in this format. 2. Underneath this are choices for sorting the list: Sort by Title (which is the default sort), release date, most popular, and date added to site. 3. Available copies shows how many are currently available for lending. 4. Action links - Add to emedia Bag or Request Title 5. Add to Wish List keep of list of books you want to read. 6. Rating Stars use to keep track of what you have read. PDF ebooks Click on any title or any book cover to view more information about the book.

10 17 The page shows details about the book which includes a description, when it was published, subjects it is listed under and if you like this title you might also like Social networking tools are also available to to a friend, post on Facebook or Twitter. Moving on to searching: Scroll up to the top of the emedia Catalog, until you see the red search box. Details 18 In the search box enter search terms such as a keyword(s), author s name, subject, etc. This box performs a Keyword search. Results: This search places an OR between the words so you get a lot of results that may or may not be the book you are looking for. So how do you target what you are looking for? At the top of the page, under the search box, click Advanced Search. Searching

11 19 In Advanced Search, you can search by the exact title, author, ISBN, subject, etc. and combine it with a format. You can even display only copies available by checking off the box just above the Search button. Do a search here to see if you are more successful. Hint: When entering an author s name do it in this order: First name Last name Advanced Search Go to Advanced Search 2. Select format PDF 3. Check off the box labeled Only show titles with copies available 4. Click Search Check Out

12 21 1. Choose a title which has a lot of available copies. 2. Click on add to emedia Bag Available PDF ebooks 22 Note the Lending period for your title. This the default lending period for the catalog. You will be given an opportunity to change the lending period at checkout. Lend periods are 7 days, 14 days or 21 days. Please note there are no renewals with emedia. But items do have unlimited check outs as long as it is a another patron is not waiting for the item. Click Proceed to Checkout emedia Bag

13 23 The Check Out screen informs you how many titles you have checked out and how many will be left after this checkout. 1. Here is where you can change your Lending Period by clicking the drop down arrow and select one of the lending periods. 2. Click Confirm check out Check Out 24 Since you have installed you Adobe Digital Editions on your computer you are ready to download the title. Click the Download button. A new window opens Download

14 25 Note you are going to be opening this with Adobe Digital Editions. 1. Click Open or make sure Open with Adobe Digital Editions is selected. Never choose Save the file. 2. Click OK Opening. 26 You will see a small window showing the progress of the download. When the download is complete the book will open up. In ADE, select the Library View icon in the upper right corner of the screen. Downloading to ADE

15 27 Note: Library books have a yellow banner on the book you downloaded it shows how many days you have left to use the book. When they expire, the banner turns to red. Books purchased or free ebooks have no banner. Books are automatically returned to the library when they expire but they remain on your computer and ereader. You need to manually delete them. Now lets transfer the ebook to your ereader. Connect your ereader to the computer. Library View 28 A small icon for your reader will appear on the Bookshelves under the blue books. ereader Connected

16 29 To transfer the book you just downloaded to your ereader: 1. Click and hold the left mouse button and drag it over your ereader icon 2. Let go of the mouse buttons and it will transfer. 3. When finished, disconnect your ereader from the computer. 4. Look on your ereader for the book Transferring to ereader To find your book on a Nook: 1. Select the menu bar 2. Select library 3. Select my files 4. Select Digital Editions folder 5. Look for your book 30 ebooks can be returned to the library before they expire. 1. Click on the word Library (located in the upper left corner) 2. Select List View Return ebook Early

17 31 3. Find the title you want to return 4. Point your mouse to the front of the title, an arrow appears 5. Click the down arrow next to the title. 6. Select Return Borrowed Item 7. Click Return It will disappear from ADE. Note: It will also disappear from your ereader if it is connected or reconnected to the computer after it has been returned. 18 33 My emedia Account emedia Bag view items currently added; holds them for 30 minutes. Lending Periods personalized you lending periods for each type of format. Note: the default in the catalog is 7 days. My emedia Shelf displays books currently checked out with a download button. Request Title displays all books you have placed on hold. Note: You have only 3 days to checkout the title once the is sent. Wish List Use to create a list of items. My Mobipocket PIDs only for those using an older handheld device such as a Dell Axiom or Palm Pilot. Rated Titles items you have used the 5 star rating system. Authorize your home computer with Adobe ID created in class. 6. Find a title you want to read which has no available copies and request it. Hint: enter an which you get on your cell phone. 7. Find an ebook, check it out, download it and transfer it to your ereader. Then sit back and enjoy! 36 Do you have questions? What is the difference between Adobe PDF ebooks and Adobe EPUB ebooks? Adobe PDF ebooks text resizing does not work well. PDF works well for graphic novels, illustrated titles, and other titles with specific formatting. Adobe EPUB ebooks feature reflowable text, which means you can resize the text or change the size of your display and the text of the Adobe EPUB ebook reflows to fill the available view area. This makes Adobe EPUB ebooks the best choice for reading ebooks on small screens, like an ebook reader.
