3 Windws 7 Desktp - The Elements f the Windws 7 Desktp Desktp with backgrund picture Desktp Gadget Taskbar Ntificatin icns The desktp cntains start buttn, taskbar, windws, icns, gadgets, files, and prgrams. Yu can use the desktp t access, stre, rganize, mdify, share, and explre infrmatin, whether it resides n yur cmputer, a netwrk r the Internet. The Taskbar Shw Desktp Start buttn Windws Explrer Windws Media Player Prgram Buttns Shw Hidden Icns Netwrk cnnectins (e.g. wireless) The Windws 7 taskbar is lcated at the bttm f the screen. It cntains several items: the Start buttn, prgram and taskbar buttns, ntificatin area, and Shw desktp buttn. Intrductin t Windws 7 Page 2

4 Mre n the Taskbar The Taskbar, by default is lcated at the bttm n the windw. This lcatin can be changed. T change the psitin f the taskbar: 1. Right-click n the taskbar 2. Chse Prperties frm the shrt cut menu 3. Frm the dialg bx displayed set Taskbar lcatin n screen t: a. Bttm b. Left c. Right d. Tp The taskbar can be hidden frm view, very useful when using the DER netbks r mre windw space is required. 1. Right-click n the taskbar 2. Chse Prperties frm the shrt-cut menu 3. 5 The Start buttn Prvides a launch pint fr all cmmands and applicatins n yur system. Use t quickly start a prgram, find and pen files, access the Windws Help and Supprt Centre, shut dwn cmputer, etc. Windws Explrer The Windws 7 Windws Explrer prvides a quick access t all the files and flders in the cmputer and als shws all devices cnnected t the cmputer e.g. USB Libraries enable yu t see the cntents f multiple flders n yur cmputer r netwrk shares as a single lgical flder. When yu pen Windws Explrer in Windws 7, it pens the Libraries flder by default. By default, there are fur libraries: Dcuments, Music, Pictures, and Vides. Similar t the previus My Dcuments, My Music etc. Nte: Files will autmatically be saved t the Libraries flder unless anther lcatin is specified. Intrductin t Windws 7 Page 4

7 Mre n Windws Explrer In Windws Explrer, every flder windw displays tw cnsistent elements which can t be hidden: 1. The title bar, and 2. The tlbar The title bar always cntains the fllwing tls fr mving arund and fr lcating infrmatin: 1. Navigatin buttns: a. The Back and Frward buttns mve between previusly visited windw cntent b. The Recent Pages buttn (the arrw t the right f the Frward buttn) displays a list f flders yu have viewed; yu can return t any flder by clicking it in the list. 2. Address bar: Beginning n the left with the icn representing the item type, the Address bar displays the friendly path t the flder whse cntents are currently displayed in the flder windw. 8 3. Clicking the arrw that appears after a flder name displays a list f its subflders and certain high-level flders; yu can switch t anther lcatin by clicking it in the list. 4. Clicking the flder icn takes yu t the flder. 5. The address bar can be used t navigate thrugh the different flders 6. The search bx can be used t search fr particular items. The tlbar can vary based n the cntents f the flder displayed in the flder windw. The buttns n the tlbar represent cntext-specific cmmands fr wrking with the flder and its cntent. The Change yur View icn allws yu t custmise hw the icns in the flder will be represented. Available chices are: Clicking the arrws next t an item in the Details Pane will expand r cllapse the flder. 9 The Prgram r Taskbar Buttns Shws prgrams and used t switch between pen windws and prgrams. Default prgrams are Internet Explrer, Windws Explrer, and Windws Media Player. Fast access t frequently used applicatins (yu can custmize it). The Jump Lists Right-click n a prgram icn in the taskbar, Windws 7 will display a list f menus knwn as jump list. A jump list shws a list f recently used dcuments created using that prgram. Als displays a list f actins that yu can perfrm within the selected applicatin e.g. Pin this prgram t taskbar, Clse windw The Ntificatin Icns (als called the System Tray) Cntains the time, the date, and prgram related icns. Click an icn t display a windw f ptins. If icns in the ntificatin area are nt used fr a while, an arrw appears t hide the icns. Click the arrw t display hidden icn. Cntains icns fr vlume cntrl, battery levels, Bluetth, ejecting a USB device etc. Drag a hidden icn n r displayed icn ff the ntificatin area t add r remve it frm the taskbar Shw Desktp Buttn Clicking the Shw Desktp buttn allws yu t quickly shw the Windws desktp. 10 Windws 7 Gadgets Windws 7 Gadgets Windws 7 gadgets allw yu t quickly access varius handy features frm yur cmputer desktp such as Internet radi, slide shw, traffic maps, clcks, feed nline data direct t yur desktp, and mre. Right-click the muse n the desktp t display the shrt-cut menu Select Gadgets frm the menu displayed Select the gadget t insert Duble click the muse n the gadget OR right click n the gadget and select Add t add the gadget t the desktp. T change gadget ptins Sme gadgets e.g. clck, have mre than ne style. Pint t the gadget yu want t change, click the Optins buttn (spanner icn), select the ptins want, and then click OK. yu The spanner icn is visible when yu hver the muse near the gadget The gadget will be placed in the tp right hand crner f the desktp it can be dragged and placed anywhere n the desktp. T clse a gadget Pint t the gadget yu want t clse, click the Clse buttn, and then click Clse Gadget (if requested) OR Right-click n the gadget, click Clse gadget frm the menu. 11 Windws 7 Persnalising the Desktp The desktp backgrund image, sunds, icns etc can be persnalised. T persnalise yur settings: Right click n the desktp Frm the shrt cut menu displayed select Persnalize The Persnalize dialg bx is divided int 2 sectins. The left hand side allws yu t access: 1. Cntrl Panel Hme (t custmise yur settings) 2. Change Desktp Icns add r delete standard icns that appear n the desktp 3. Change Muse Pinters change the style f yur muse pinter 4. Change Yur Accunt Picture change the picture assigned t the cmputer user lgged in. The right hand side f the Persnalize dialg bx cntains several Aer themes Intrductin t Windws 7 Page 10

12 Nte: Windws 7 Aer is an envirnment which add visual effects t the desktp windw These effects includes transparent interface elements, clurful windw, subtle windw animatins, live prgram thumbnails display n the taskbar, Windws Flip and Windws Flip 3D that yu can use t graphically pen windws, and Aer Peek r Aer Snap that yu can use t minimize and restre pen prgrams and windws. Frm the Persnalizatin windw, chse a theme that yu like in the Aer Themes sectin. Yu will ntice that the desktp will change immediately. A randm backgrund image assigned t the theme will becme the backgrund image. T select and change the image displayed n the backgrund: 1. Click n Desktp Backgrund under the Themes displayed. 2. Make sure Picture Lcatin is set t: Windws Desktp Backgrunds 3. All images available t be used as the backgrund are displayed. 4. Click n the required image and click Save Changes 5. 13 Nte: If using the cmputer n direct pwer, the backgrund theme can be set t a slide shw with different images frm the selected theme being displayed. Yu have the ability t change the timing f the slide shw. When running n battery, the slide shw ptin shuld be disabled t reduce pwer cnsumptin. There are three (3) main Windws 7 Aer Visual Effects 1. Live Thumbnails n Taskbar Hvering the muse pinter ver a taskbar item e.g. Wrd, PwerPint, Internet Explrer etc, Windws Aer will display a Live thumbnail f the windw, shwing the cntent n the screen. This nly wrks if a prgram is pen. 2. Windws Flip and Windws Flip 3D Windws Flip allws yu t flip thrugh pen windws with the Alt + Tab keys. 3. Windws Flip 3D creates a view f yur pen windws in a three-dimensinal stack n yur desktp. T flip frm ne windw t anther, press the Windws (Hme) + Tab cmbinatin keys. Intrductin t Windws 7 Page 12

14 4. Aer Peek and Aer Snap Aer Peek enables yu t instantly view the desktp withut minimizing r clsing prgrams. After yu view the desktp, yu can instantly bring prgram windws back t their riginal psitins with a click f a Shw Desktp buttn. Shw Desktp Aer Snap enables yu t cntrl the windw size and lcatin f any prgram running n yur desktp using the keybard. If yu mve a prgram windw t the far left r far right f the desktp it reduces the windw t half a screen. This allws fr tw prgrams t be viewed side by side. Yu may need t reduce the size f the windw t be able t drag the windw. Shrtcut: Hme/Windws + right arrw dcks the pen applicatin t the right hand side f the windw. Hme/Windws + left arrw key dcks the pen windw t the left hand side f the windw. Intrductin t Windws 7 Page 13

15 The Windws 7 Start Menu Cmmands and Descriptins The Start menu is divided int tw clumns left and right, allws yu t pen/start a prgram, pen a dcument, change a Windws setting, find a file, display supprt infrmatin, and s n. The tp right side f the Start menu indicates wh is currently using the cmputer (e.g. detuser). The bttm f the start menu cntains an instant search bx, which allws yu t search the Start menu t find prgrams and ther Windws items, such as Internet favurites, histry, files, cntacts, messages, and s n. As yu type, the Windws 7 Start menu shws the pssible results rganised by type with the number f matches fund. Nte: The view belw will be different depending n the cmputer e.g. desktp, DER netbk, laptp and the permissins f the user e.g. Administratr, user Intrductin t Windws 7 Page 14

17 Item Snipping Tl Descriptin Allws a screen sht f any part f the cmputer screen. The screen sht r snip is cpied t the clipbard. The screen sht can be saved as a JPEG, GIF, PNG r single file HTML file. There are 4 types f snips available: Free-frm snip Rectangular snip Windw snip Full-screen snip If using the snipping tl t take a screen sht f smething ther than the desktp, make sure the prgram e.g. Wrd is pen befre selecting the snipping tl. The snipping tl tlbar is displayed and the screen is ghsted. Click and drag t select the required sectin. The screen sht can be anntated as required. Cnnect t a Prjectr Optins when laptp is cnnected t a data prjectr: Cmputer screen nly, Duplicate the image n bth cmputer and screen, Prjectr nly. Sticky Ntes Add a nte t the desktp (similar t pst-it ntes). Yu may add multiple ntes just click n the + sign. Click x t delete the sticky nte. Magnifier All Prgrams This launches a magnifying glass t magnify the desktp/parts f the desktp. Click n the plus sign t increase the size f magnificatin. The View ptin will allw yu t chse hw the magnifier wrks i.e. Full Screen, Lens r Dcked. Click n the Magnifier in the Taskbar t clse it if needed. 18 Using the Snipping Tl The Snipping Tl, fund in the Start menu, allws a picture f part f r the entire windw t be taken. The image can be saved as an image and used in ther applicatins. 1. Select the Snipping Tl frm the Start menu 2. The windw will be cvered with a see-thrugh layer. 3. Click and drag t draw a rectangle arund the area f the windw yu want t take a picture f. 4. Click the muse yu will hear the sund f a camera taking the pht. 5. Yu can use the snipping tl in any prgram e.g. internet sites, PwerPint, Smart Ntebk etc. 6. Images can be saved as jpeg t use in ther applicatins. 7. There are several ptins available fr the shape f the screen capture: a. Free-frm Snip b. Rectangular Snip c. Windw Snip d. Full-screen Snip 8. Once the screen is captured the image appears in a new windw 9. The image can be: 1. Saved as an image 2. Cpied 3. Anntated using the pen tl 4. 20 Adding prgrams t the Start menu r Taskbar Prgrams that are used frequently can be added t the Taskbar r the Start menu. This avids having t g thrugh the All Prgrams menu. 1. Adding prgrams t the Start Menu r Taskbar a. Click the Start buttn b. Click All Prgrams c. Navigate t the flder cntaining the prgram e.g. Micrsft Office d. Right-click n the name f the prgram (d nt click n the prgram therwise it will be launched!) e. Select Pin t Taskbar OR Pin t Start Menu as required. f. 21 Checking Netwrk Cnnectins n the DER netbks T check that the wireless cnnectin is active and cnnected fr the S10E netbks: Check that the 3 rd blue light n the frnt panel f the netbk is ON. This indicates the wireless is active. Wireless active light If nt, click the green wireless buttn n the tp f the netbk OR T check that the wireless cnnectin is active and cnnected fr the ThinkPad Mini 10 netbks: Use Fn + F5 t check the wireless is ON Fn + F5 Intrductin t Windws 7 Page 20

22 Nte: When nt using the wireless cnnectin, turn it OFF t cnserve battery pwer. Check that the wireless is cnnected t the DET netwrk. Hver ver the wireless status icn n the task bar. It shuld give the name f the netwrk cnnected t. Make sure that detnsw cnnectin is cnnected. If nt, click n the name f the netwrk and click Cnnect t cnnect t the wireless netwrk. Nte: If the wireless is nt turned n then the internet cannt be accessed. Ntes: The netbks will access any wireless netwrk that can be accessed e.g. a hme wireless netwrk. The netwrks can cnnect t a schl netwrk via a netwrk cable Within DET: If the web page cannt be displayed yu may need t change sme settings t access the DET netwrk Click Internet Explrer t access internet Click Tls n right hand side menu bar r frm Tls menu Click Internet Optins A dialg bx is displayed Click the Cnnectins tab Intrductin t Windws 7 Page 21

23 Click LAN settings Under Prxy server: Tick the bx: Use a prxy server fr yur LAN Address: Type in Prxy.det.nsw.edu.au Prt: Type in 8080 Click OK Click OK again Click n the Hme buttn in the web page t refresh yur screen OR Click the refresh buttn next t the address bx: Nte: When at hme UNTICK this bx s the wireless netwrk will be autmatically detected.
