I is designed for deploymen a seleced locaions in he backhaul nework following he approach in he ITU-T G sandard for parial on-pah suppor. This approach enables iming from a cenrally locaed grandmaser o be mainained over currenly deployed nework equipmen, eliminaing he need o upgrade every elemen o include a PTP boundary clock funcion. This synchronizaion overlay soluion is made possible by feaures no ypically found in inegraed boundary clock designs. Using Microsemi s advanced PTP clien sofware and adapive iming calculaions, hese capabiliies include superior clock recovery algorihms ha deermine he bes ime samps on which o base he offse calculaion; he abiliy o miigae for iming impairmens; faser clock recovery imes; he abiliy o adap for load asymmery; and he abiliy o leverage frequency inpu from SyncE or E1/ T1 signals. TimeProvider 2300 also offers he opporuniy o upgrade he reference oscillaor o exend he holdover ime in he even inpu signals are los. TimeProvider 2300 suppors 8 o 512 PTP cliens and offers addiional oupu capabiliies ha allow i o suppor legacy frequency iming applicaions, including E1/T1, 10 MHz, pulse per second (PPS) and ime of day (TOD). When deployed in an end o end nework wih Microsemi s TimeProvider 5000 PTP Grandmaser and TimePicra Synchronizaion Managemen Sysem, carriers can also benefi from superior monioring informaion and managemen capabiliies. Edge Maser Clocks The coninuing evoluion of mobile nework echnologies has driven he need for increased accuracy and greaer availabiliy of iming and synchronizaion signals. A he same ime, backhaul neworks wih high packe delay variaion presen iming jier variaion and asymmery challenges ha are difficul o solve wih curren soluions. Furhermore, deploying a GNSS receiver a every locaion is impracical, paricularly in many small cell environmens. Togeher, hese issues creae he need for a new overall synchronizaion disribuion archiecure for LTE neworks. Edge Maser clocks are PTP synchronizaion equipmen designed for deploymen in curren neworks by locaing a grandmaser a or near he edge or by overlaying he nework wih advanced gaeway clocks a designed locaions. They enable mobile nework ransiions o include small cells, and hey suppor he sringen LTE-TDD and LTE-A phase and ime requiremens wihou overhauling he curren backhaul nework. In frequency synchronized neworks (LTE-FDD and 2G/3G), edge maser equipmen can be deployed o eliminae iming issues caused by diverse echnologies in he backhaul nework, high packe delay environmens, and asymmery inheren in Carrier Eherne neworks. The TimeProvider 2300 is an advanced sandalone PTP gaeway clock for deploymen a planned locaions o suppor precision ime disribuion over Eherne backhaul neworks. Also included in he edge maser caegory, Microsemi s TimeProvider 2700 is a PTP grandmaser deployed a or near he edge of he nework. Togeher, edge maser producs enable synchronizaion disribuion soluions ha allow he mobile nework o coninue o evolve wihou rerofi of exising backhaul equipmen and wihou changes o curren nework design or swiching/rouing policies.

2 TimeProvider 2300 Meeing Sringen Synchronizaion Accuracy Requiremens Synchronizaion accuracy requiremens have gone from relaively rouine frequency specificaions (16 ppb on he nework side, 50 ppb for he air inerface) o more sringen ime and phase requiremens as igh as ±1.5 µsec. GNSS receivers co-deployed or inegraed ino he mobile base saions are no always a feasible soluion for eiher echnical or economic reasons (saellie visibiliy and anenna deploymen coss, for example). Primary Reference Time Clock performance, specified by ITU-T G.8272, mees he accuracy requiremens using a GNSS signal (GPS or GLONASS) as a reference, and he IEEE 1588 PTP can deliver he needed accuracy under he righ condiions. However, backhaul neworks wih many hops and asymmeric pahs beween he grandmaser and he PTP clien; muliple ranspor echnologies; or high packe delay variaion due o loading or oher issues canno be sure o consisenly mee he required specificaions. One soluion is o upgrade he backhaul nework for Synchronous Eherne and include a PTP boundary clock in every ranspor elemen. This is he approach in ITU-T G wih full iming on-pah suppor from he nework. This soluion requires ha CORE AGGREGATION every nework elemen beween he grandmaser and he clien suppor Synchronous Eherne and include a boundary clock funcion a soluion ha is no always feasible due o he high cos o upgrade a nework or because he mobile carrier employs hird-pary neworks for backhaul. Furhermore, operaing a Eherne Layer 2, G may obsolee or conflic wih he curren MPLS nework design and provisioning policies of he curren backhaul nework. 3 GNSS (GPS and GLONASS) and Small Cells Inegraed GNSS receivers are a viable alernaive for iming of macro enodeb equipmen, hough operaions would sill be jeopardized by he well-publicized vulnerabiliies of GNSS sysems, and so using nework disribued synchronizaion a leas for backup is considered bes pracice. Mero or public access small cells presen new challenges for synchronizaion. They require igh iming accuracy, bu are ofen deployed in locaions where adequae GNSS signal recepion is no feasible. TimeProvider 2300 is designed for cos-effecive deploymen a small cell aggregaion sies. From his locaion, mos small cell backhaul links can suppor disribuion of PTP iming o small cell base saions. Should he small cell backhaul links hemselves include many hops or high packe delay variaion (PDV), he problem can be solved by deploying an advanced gaeway clock a seleced small cell nework nodes. Proeced Synchronizaion As igher synchronizaion becomes more essenial o he normal operaion of he nework (Iner-Cell Inerference Coordinaion, for example) he negaive impac of loosing synchronizaion becomes more significan. Rubidium oscillaors provide a way o proec synchronizaion by delivering bes-in-class holdover performance (phase iming of ±1.5 µsec for up o 24 hours). Ofen seen as expensive upgrades for individual macro base saions, rubidium oscillaors in an advanced gaeway clock are now more affordable as heir cos is amorized across an enire cluser of small cells and co-locaed macro base saions. TimeProvider 2300 Equipmen TimeProvider 2300 PTP gaeway clock provides wo gigabi Eherne inerfaces in a combo por configuraion supporing use of eiher copper or opical connecions. They are configured as one PTP inpu por and one PTP oupu por. Synchronous Eherne is suppored on boh pors. Models and opions are available o suppor 8 o 512 PTP cliens, all operaing a he full 128 messages per second rae. Clien capaciy can be increased in he field wih sofware license opions. TimeProvider 2300 is available wih eiher an OCXO or rubidium oscillaor, each delivering a differen level of phase and frequency holdover performance and allowing operaors o beer opimize heir nework SLAs. TimeProvider 2300 includes a programmable 10 MHz or 1 PPS BNC por and a PPS+TOD RS422 on an RJ45 connecion. Models wih eiher dual-dc or single-ac power inpu are available. Using passive cooling, TimeProvider 2300 has no fans. TimeProvider 2300 Sofware License Opions Licensed sofware opions for TimeProvider 2300 include: Greaer clien capaciy: PTP clien capaciy in deployed unis can be increased o 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, or 512 cliens, allowing nework engineers o design for capaciy hey need oday and be proeced for increased requiremens in he fuure. 6 Packe Delay Variaion (PDV) and Asymmery Timing and synchronizaion, fundamenal in all mobile neworks, is even more criical as small cells are added and neworks evolve o LTE-TDD and LTE-A echnologies. Backhaul nework performance can dramaically impac PTP iming accuracy, and hereby he mobile nework iself affecing service qualiy and cusomer saisfacion. The problem is packe delay variaion (PDV), which represens he change in laency from packe o packe. Packe delay iself has no effec on he accuracy of he clock, as consan delay would allow an accurae ime offse calculaion by he PTP clien. Variable delay, however, induces noise in he PTP clien s percepion of he ime a he maser, which can resul in variaion in ime calculaions based on he ime samps in he PTP packes. Delay can vary as PTP packes are processed, buffered, and queued along wih he payload raffic hrough he nework swiches and rouers, and i ends o be correlaed o nework load ha can be highly asymmeric in naure. As he amoun of raffic in he nework increases, he delay variaion is also likely o increase. Time accuracy is affeced by boh he magniude of his variaion and how effecive he clien is a removing his noise.
