2 INTRODUCTION The VWF350 series of switch mode power supplies in the Kestrel fmily offers 3, 4 or 5 fully regulted dc outputs from very wide rnge, power fctor corrected, c input. The 350 wtt continuous output power rting is complemented by 500 wtt surge cpbility. This llows output 2 to support 200% surge current, idel for high pek surge current pplictions such s powering disk drives. Cooling is by integrl fn nd therml protection is provided for mximum relibility. An extensive rnge of output voltge combintions is vilble to meet the diverse requirements of modern electronic systems. For exmple, mixed 3.3V nd 5V systems re redily supported by the Kestrel fmily. All outputs, with the exception of low current output 5, hve remote sense cpbility for ccurte voltge regultion. Outputs 1 nd 2 hve ctive current shre fcilities for pplictions requiring prllel connection with other units. Unit inhibit, power fil signl nd LED sttus indictors re provided s stndrd. An optionl signls crd gives DC OK signl, fn fil signl nd +5V 100mA uxiliry supply for externl functions. Input connection is either by stndrd, quick connect IEC led or, optionlly, to screw terminl block. Output connection up to 20A is by stndrd, quickmte, multi-pole plugs (vilble s n ccessory.) Output 1 connection is vi M4 mounting screws on ngled busbrs. The VWF350 complies with EN60950 being CE mrked to the Low Voltge Directive nd is sfety pproved to both UL1950 nd CSA 22.2 No The unit is designed to meet current nd pending Interntionl EMC Directive requirements. NEW INTRODUCTIONS - The Kestrel fmily is being extended with 48Vdc input version vilble December Similr power supplies cn be specified to support both c mins input or 48Vdc input, with single footprint. Surge Current Up to 24A is vilble from output 2. This is fully supported by surge power cpbility of up to 500W totl output power. The pek current on output 2 is limited to 26.4A 6 2.4A, reducing fter bout 3s to rech 14.4A 6 1.8A within 8s. The limit then resets to 26.4A 6 2.4A within 1s of removl of the overlod. See output current limit under Protection. The verge current over 1 minute period must not exceed 12A. Power 350W continuous up to 50 C. From 50 C to 70 C derte by 2.5%/ C. Surge Power Up to 500W surge power is vilble from the power supply. Typiclly, the surge power is vilble for 15 seconds in ny 1 minute period. Lod Regultion 1%VNOM mximum for n output current vrition of 0 to 100% IMAX with ll other outputs loded to 20% IMAX. The output voltge of ny output is independent of the lod current on ny other output. Line Regultion 0.2%VNOM mximum for n input vrition over the operting rnge of the unit with ll outputs proportionlly loded to provide 350W output power. Dynmic Regultion Outputs 1 nd 2: 250mV mximum devition, recovering to 1% of nominl within 1ms. Outputs 3 to 5: 5%VNOM mximum devition, recovering to 1% of nominl within 1ms. 4 ELECTRICAL SPECIFICATION PROTECTION Input Fuse Internlly fitted fuse rted t 7A T. 250V. Output Current Limit The current limit point on outputs 1, 3, 4 nd 5 is set to 120% ±15% of IMAX except for output 5 low current modules (1.5A output) t <3.5A. The chrcteristic is constnt current nd is non-ltching. Output 2 current is limited to the re shown in figure 1. The cycle is initited (time = 0) by the output current exceeding the stedy stte current limit point of 14.4A 6 1.8A (I 1 ). At tht time the current limit point is 26.4A 6 2.4A (I 2 ). After 3s nom., the current limit point rmps down to rech 14.4A 6 1.8A (I 1 ) t 8s nom. The current will be limited t this vlue until the lod is reduced to drw less thn the limit. The protection circuitry will reset to the higher limit point of 26.4A 6 2.4A (I 2 ) within 1s of the overlod being removed. Output Overvoltge Output 1 hs trcking overvoltge t 1V V bove the set output voltge. Outputs 2 to 5 overvoltge trip is set t 120% 6 10% of nominl output voltge (125% 6 5% on 3.3V outputs). Overvoltge protection is ltching nd cn be reset either by removing the input power from the power supply or by toggling the Inhibit input. An overvoltge condition is indicted by red LED. Overtemperture In the event of therml overlod, the unit will be disbled. Output power will be restored when the unit temperture drops to sfe level. Ltching therml trip is lso vilble when option 1 or option 3 is specified. An overtemperture condition is indicted by red LED. AUXILIARY FUNCTIONS Remote Sense Avilble on ll outputs except low current output 5 modules (1.5A). Compenstes for led drops of up to 500mV on outputs 1,2 nd 3 nd 250mV on outputs 4 nd 5. Prllel Opertion Outputs 1 nd 2 my be connected in prllel with the corresponding output of the sme voltge rting on nother unit. Active current shre: Current shring, pro rt to the current rting of ech output, cn be chieved by linking current shre pins of linked outputs. The -sense connections must be linked nd voltges set to within 1% of ech other for ctive current shre to operte correctly. Series Opertion Outputs my be connected in series to provide higher output voltges. Outputs 1 nd 2 hve common 0V line so cnnot be connected in series with ech other. Mximum voltge between outputs is 100Vdc. For full protection, ech series connected output should hve diode fitted reverse bised cross it. The diode must be cpble of pssing the mximum current vilble from ny of the series connected outputs. STANDARD SIGNALS All signls re referenced to -sense. Inhibit TTL comptible input. The output power of complete power supply my be inhibited by logic signl pplied to this input. Removl of the logic signl reinsttes the output voltge. A short pulse on this input (<30ms) will cuse the unit to toggle on or off. The sense of the signl is low to inhibit s stndrd, but specifying option 2 or 3 will provide n ctive high inhibit. Power Fil Signl An open collector output signl provides wrning of impending output filure due to loss of input. At lest 5ms wrning of output power loss is provided. Output is high for power OK. ENHANCED SIGNALS - OPTION B DC OK Avilble when option B is specified. An open collector output provides signl indicting tht ll output voltges re bove 90% of nominl. Signl is high for outputs OK. +5 Volt Logic Supply Avilble when option B is specified. This +5V supply is provided by stndrd 78L05 I.C. regultor nd is cpble of delivering up to 100mA. It hs integrl therml overlod nd short circuit protection. The 0V of this supply is connected to -sense of output 1. This output remins vilble even if other outputs re inhibited. Fn Fil Avilble when option B is specified. An open collector output provides signl indicting tht the internl fn speed hs dropped below predetermined fixed level. Output is high for fn OK.
