6 Configuring Eudora/IMAP 1.0 Configuring your Program-Eudora/IMAP You must be using Eudora 6.2 or later. After installing Eudora you need to configure it for use with mailbox. Note: If you are upgrading from an earlier version of Eudora, your configuration settings are carried over. 1.1 Start Eudora. 1.2 In the Tools menu, click Options. 1.3 Click the Getting Started icon. The recommended settings are: a. Real name: your own as you want it to appear in messages you send b. address: your c. Mail Server (Incoming): your sunetid.pobox.stanford.edu d. User Name: your sunetid e. SMTP Server (Outgoing): smtp-secure.stanford.edu f. Allow authentication: checked Figure 1 Getting Started February 1, 2006 v1.0 Page 6 of 31
7 Configuring Eudora/IMAP 1.4 Click the Checking Mail icon. The recommended settings are: a. Mail Server: your sunetid.pobox.stanford.edu b. User Name: your sunetid c. Check for mail every 15 minutes: If you want Eudora to automatically check to see if you have mail after a certain period of time, check this box and enter how often you want Eudora to check your mail. ITSS recommends that you set this to 15 minutes or longer. d. Send on check: checked e. Save password: unchecked f. 9 Configuring Eudora/IMAP 1.6 Click the Sending Mail icon. The recommended settings are: a. address: your b. Domain to add to unqualified addresses: stanford.edu c. SMTP Server: smtp-secure.stanford.edu d. Allow authentication: checked e. Immediate send: checked f. Send on check: checked if desired g. Use submission port (587): unchecked h. Secure Sockets when Sending: Required, Alternate Port Figure 4 Sending Mail Icon 1.7 If you want to enable Eudora's junk mail filter, click the Junk Mail icon. The recommended setting is: a. Automatically place junk in Junk mailbox: checked if you want Eudora to filter that it considers junk (spam) to the Junk mailbox b. 10 Configuring Eudora/POP 2.0 Configuring your Program-Eudora/POP 2.1 Start Eudora. 2.2 In the Tools menu, click Options. 2.3 Click the Getting Started icon. The recommended settings are: a. 11 Configuring Eudora/POP 2.4 Click the Checking Mail icon. The recommended settings are: a. Mail Server: your sunetid.pobox.stanford.edu b. User Name: your sunetid c. Check for mail every XX minutes: If you want Eudora to automatically check to see if you have mail after a certain period of time, check this box and enter how often you want Eudora to check your mail. ITSS recommends that you set this to 15 minutes or longer. d. Send on check: checked e. Save password: unchecked f. 12 Configuring Eudora/POP 2.5 Click the Incoming Mail icon. Please note Authentication Styles = Passwords! The recommended settings are: a. Server configuration: POP b. Leave mail on server: If this is your primary computer where you are storing your , leave this box unchecked. If you are reading from more than one computer, see Reading Eudora from Multiple Computers for recommended settings. Note: The POP protocol, by default, downloads messages to your computer and then deletes them from the mail server. If you leave all of your on a primary computer (for example, your office computer) but want to have access to recently received on a secondary computer (a home computer), you should leave your messages on the server. If you need access to all of your from more than one computer, IMAP may be a better choice for you. See Is IMAP Right For Me. c. Delete from server after _ day(s): If you checked the Leave mail on server option and this is your primary computer, check this box and specify a number of days. The mail stays on the server for the given number of days, during which time you can access previously-read messages on your secondary computer. 14 Configuring Eudora/POP 2.7 If you want to enable Eudora's junk mail filter, click the Junk Mail icon. The recommended settings are: a. Automatically place junk in Junk mailbox: checked if you want Eudora to filter that it considers junk (spam) to the Junk mailbox b. Remove mail that is at least _ days old: unchecked Note: Incoming messages go through Eudora's junk filter before going through any other filter that you may have set up. 15 Configuring Eudora/POP 2.8 The rest of the settings can be personalized to fit your work style. a. If you want to configure Eudora's Directory Services feature to allow you to look up Stanford students, staff, and faculty in the Stanford Directory, see Configuring Directory Services for Windows. b. For more information about the rest of the settings, consult the Eudora online Help. 2.9 Click OK Reading in Eudora for the First Time a. To check for new messages and download them to your computer, click the Check Mail button on the tool bar. You can also download messages by going to the File menu and clicking Check Mail. 16 Configuring Outlook 2002 (XP) IMAP 3.0 Configuring Your Program Outlook 2002 IMAP 3.1 Start Microsoft Outlook. 3.2 On the Tools menu, click Accounts. 3.3 Click Add a new account and then click Next. 17 Configuring Outlook 2002 (XP) IMAP 3.5 Enter the following settings: a. Your Name: your name b. Address: your Stanford address c. User Name: your SUNet ID d. Password: leave blank e. Remember Password: unchecked f. Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA): unchecked g. Incoming server (IMAP): your sunetid.pobox.stanford.edu h. 20 Configuring Outlook 2002 (XP) IMAP 3.9 Click the Advanced tab. Under the Server Port Numbers area, enter the following information for outgoing mail: a. In the Incoming server (IMAP) area, check the box for this server requires a secure connection (SSL). b. Change the Incoming Server (IMAP) text box to 993. c. Change the Outgoing Sever (SMTP) text box to 465. d. Check the This server requires an encrypted connected (SSL). Figure 17 Advanced Tab-Enter Server Port Numbers e. 22 Configuring Outlook 2002 (XP) IMAP 4.0 Reading in Outlook 2002 for the First Time 4.1 Click the Send/Receive button, located below the menu bar, to display you messages. Leave the Remember Password box unchecked. 4.4 Click the Inbox folder, located under the Stanford folder, to display you messages. 4.5 Click the message you wish to read. 27 Configuring Outlook 2002 (XP) POP 5.8 Click the Advanced tab. Under the Server Port Numbers area, enter the following information for outgoing mail: a. Incoming server (POP): 995 b. This server requires a secure connection (SSL): checked c. In the Delivery area, check the box for Leave a copy of messages on the server. d. If this is your primary computer, include a number of days in the Remove from server after _ days field. The mail stays on the server for a given number of days, during which time you can access previously-read messages on your secondary computer. If mail is left on the server indefinitely, you will eventually exceed your quota.
