10 ROGRAM NOTES ADARNA is a antastical ork insired by the iliino olk tale Ibong Adarna This iliino story centers on the elegant and magical Adarna bird, hose songs are so soothing that they can lure eole to slee and hose oers can cure all ailments The quest or the bird begins hen King Don ernando alls ill, and the only cure or his oor health is the Adarna s birdsong The irst movement o soothing songs is a deiction o a diamond tree, hich is said to be the Adarna bird s natural habitat Metallic sounds are accomanied by eerie sustained notes to ortray the enchanting, yet dangerous environment The ute soloist acts as the Adarna bird in this movement, singing seductive melodies and mimicking some bird-like qualities In this tale, it is said that the bird lures eole to slee singing seven songs, and hen the bird successully sings these seven songs, the bird turns humans into stone There are to climactic sections in this movement, reresenting the King s irst to sons ho ere turned into stone The movement ends ith a return to the oening material, almost as i nothing haened, leaving the to lost imrisoned brothers a mystery The second movement until the end is in ternary orm, here the irst and third sections are similar, and the middle section recalls the irst movement Draing rom ritornello orm, recognizable musical segments return throughout the movement The irst section ortrays the third son ourneying to ind the bird Along the ay, he overcomes obstacles, here he inally reaches the diamond tree The second section once again deicts the habitat o the bird, and the ute soloist imitates birdsong As the cadenza ends ith the melody dying aay, the third son catures the bird The return o the oening section illustrates the ourney back home, here the king is cured o his illness at the inal climax The movement ends ith one last celebratory ritornello section to end the deiction o the extraordinary olktale ADARNA is such a ersonal iece to me, esecially because I as born in the hiliines Having this iliino tale as the insiration or this ute concerto only seemed logical to me, esecially since I am also an active utist I am dedicating ADARNA to both o my arents, Rev hili and oyce Co Without their suort and love, I ould not be the musician I am today vii
