7 erormance Notes he quartet o solo voices requires amliication in the second and the last movements, and the microhone should be suiciently removed rom the chorus that it does not also amliy the chorus during the call-and-resonse oening o the inal movement In both these sections, the solo quartet dearts rom equal temerament, and the microhone allos or singing non vibrato and rees the soloists rom having to comromise intonation or the sake o roection he microtonal itch material arises rom characteristics o the harmonic series, the series o overtones resent in all harmonic sounds (such as that o any orchestral ind or string instrument) In the second movement, the solo voices sing a series o ustly tuned, beat-ree maor triads connected by common tones Each harmonic maor third in these assages ill reect a requency ratio o :5 ecause this interval is smaller than the idened maor third o equal temerament (hich most musicians likely consider to be the standard maor third!), and because root motion descends by maor thirds in this movement, the itch center o the vocal quartet moves gradually and uroseully higher during each o the to hrases he singers should take care not to correct their itches to the more amiliar itches o the equal-temered scale ound on the iano and on standard orchestral instruments In order to emhasize the invariance o sustained itches ithin each hrase, enharmonic resellings are avoided in the notation Melodic intervals are indicated in the voice arts, oten including the ust interval s size relative to its more amiliar equal-temered counterart In the inal movement, the solo voices sing sonorities comosed o harmonics o the undamental itch GG hese itches sound on the horn hen the aroriate ingering, v
8 usually on the -lat side, is used to make GG the undamental itch gain, the singers should careully avoid using the standard equal-temered scale y seeking to sing the most beat-ree dissonances ossible, the singers ill ind the aroriate intonations (hey can also simly coy the horns intonation) ll other solo voice assages are intended to be unamliied, or at least to be erormed ith traditional soloistic technique vi
