In the curse f this GIS training will g explaining mre in depth and making use f the functinalities f sme f these layer prperties. Style tab. Enables us t change the symblgy f features included in the vectr layer. There are three types f symbls: marker symbls (fr pints), line symbls (fr lines) and fill and utline symbls (fr plygns). Symbls can cnsist f ne r mre symbl layers. It is pssible t define the clur f a symbl and this clur is then defined fr all symbl layers. Labels tab. The Labels cre applicatin prvides smart labeling fr vectr pint, line and plygn layers and nly requires a few parameters. This new applicatin als supprts n-the-fly transfrmed layers. The cre functins f the applicatin have been redesigned. In QGIS 2.0 there are nw a number f ther features which imprve the labeling. The fllwing menus have been created fr labeling the vectr layers: text, frmatting, buffer, backgrund, shadw, placement and rendering 1

There are several ptins available, highlighting; i) change the display name f the layer, ii) set a display field t be used fr the Identify Results dialgue, iii) Update Extents infrmatin fr a layer and, iv) view r change the prjectin f the specific vectr layer, clicking n Specify CRS. Metadata tab. Cntains general infrmatin abut the layer, including specifics abut the type and lcatin, number f features, feature type, and the editing capabilities. The Extents sectin, prviding layer extent infrmatin, and the Layer Spatial Reference System sectin, prviding infrmatin abut the CRS f the layer. This is a quick way t get infrmatin abut the layer. 3

The current cre implementatin f diagrams prvides supprt fr pie charts, histgrams and text diagrams. The placement f the diagrams interacts with the new labeling, s psitin cnflicts between diagrams and labels are detected and slved. In additin t chart psitins can be fixed by the user s hand. Raster prperties dialg Style tab. QGIS ffers fur different render types. The renderer chsen is dependent n the data type. 1. Multiband clr - if the file cmes as a multi band with several bands (e.g. used with a satellite image with several bands). 2. Paletted - if a single band file cmes with an indexed palette (e.g. used with a digital tpgraphic map) 3. Singleband gray- (ne band f) the image will be rendered as gray, QGIS will chse this renderer if the file neither has multi bands, nr has an indexed palette nr has a cntinus palette (e.g. used with a shaded relief map) 4. Singleband pseudclr - this renderer is pssible fr files with a cntinuus palette, e.g. the file has gt a clr map (e.g. used with an elevatin map) 5

Use the transparency slider t indicate t what extent the underlying layers (if any) shuld be visible thugh the current raster layer.

QGIS versin cntains new features and extends the prgrammatic interface ver QGIS We recmmend that yu use this versin ver previus releases. This release includes hundreds f bug fixes and many new features and enhancements that will be described in QGIS manual ( Als cmpare with the visual change lg at We have made a selectin f the mst meaningful enhancements f this versin. User Interface New icn theme: It has been updated the icn theme t use the GIS theme intrducing an imprved level f cnsistency and prfessinalism t the QGIS user interface. Side tabs, cllapsable grups: It has been standardised the layut f tabs and intrduced cllapsible grup bxes int many f its dialgs t make navigating the varius ptins mre easy, and t make better use f screen real estate. Sft ntificatins: With the new ntificatin system QGIS can let yu knw abut imprtant infrmatin via a message bar (clur depends n the imprtance f the message) that appears at the tp f the map canvas but desn t frce yu t deal with it if yu are busy ding smething else. Prgrammers can create these ntificatin (e.g. frm a plugin) t using ur pythn API. Live clur chser dialgs and buttns: Every clur chser buttn thrughut the interface has been updated t give visual feedback n whether the current clur has a transparent, r alpha, cmpnent. The clur chser pened by the new clr buttns will nw always be the default fr the perating system. If the user has Use live-updating clur chser dialgs checked under Optins -> General -> Applicatin, any change in the clur chser will immediately be shwn in the clur buttn and fr any item currently being edited, where applicable. SVG Anntatins: With QGIS 2.0 yu can nw add SVG anntatins t yur map - either pinned t a specific place r in a relative psitin ver the map canvas. Data Prvider Oracle Spatial supprt: QGIS 2.0 nw includes Oracle Spatial supprt. Web Cverage Service prvider added: QGIS nw prvides native supprt fr Web Cverage Service layers - the prcess fr adding WCS is similar t adding a WMS layer r WFS layer. Raster Data Prvider verhaul: The raster data prvider system has been cmpletely verhauled. One f the best new features stemming frm this wrk is the ability t Layer -> Save As... t save any raster layer as a new layer. In 9

Yu can als save a raster layer as a rendered image s if yu fr example have single band raster that yu have applied a clur palette t, yu can save the rendered layer ut t a gereferenced RGB layer. Raster 2% cumulative cut by default: Many raster imagery prducts have a large number f utliers which result in images having a washed ut appearance. QGIS 2.0 intrduces much mre fine grained cntrl ver the rendering behaviur f rasters, including using a 2% - 98% percent cumulative cut by default when determining the clur space fr the image. WMS identify frmat: It is nw pssible t select the frmat f the identify tl result fr WMS layers if multiple knwn frmats are supprted by the server. The supprted frmats are HTML, feature (GML) and plain text. If the feature (GML) frmat is selected, the result is in the same frm as fr vectr layers, the gemetry may be highlighted and the feature including attributes and gemetry may be cpied t clipbard and pasted t anther layer. WMTS Supprt: The WMS client in QGIS nw supprts WMTS (Web Mapping Tile Service) including selectin f sub-datasets such as time slices. When adding a WMS layer frm a cmpliant server, yu will be prmpted t select the time slice t display. Symblgy Data defined prperties: With the new data defined prperties, it is pssible t cntrl symbl type, size, clur, rtatin, and many ther prperties thrugh feature attributes. Imprved symbl layer management: The new symbl layer verview uses a clear, tree-structured layut which allws fr easy and fast access t all symbl layers. Supprt fr transparency in clur definitins: In mst places where yu select clurs, QGIS nw allws yu t specify the alpha channel (which determines hw transparent the clur shuld be). This allws yu t create great lking maps and t hide data easily that yu dn t want users t see. Clur Cntrl fr Raster Layers: QGIS 2.0 allws yu t precisely cntrl exactly hw yu d like raster layers t appear. Yu nw have cmplete cntrl ver the brightness, cntrast and saturatin f raster layers. There are even ptins t allw display f rasters in greyscale r by clurising with a specified clur. Cpy symblgy between layers: It s nw super easy t cpy symblgy frm ne layer t anther layer. If yu are wrking with several similar layers, yu can simply right-click n ne layer, chse Cpy Style frm the cntext menu and then right-click n anther layer and chse Paste-Style. Save styles in yur database: If yu are using a database vectr data stre, yu can nw stre the layer style definitins directly in the database. This makes it easy t share styled layers in an enterprise r multi-user envirnment. 10

Yu can als design yur wn and many cpt-city themes are included in QGIS nw ut f the bx. Clur ramps even have full supprt fr transparency! Set custm default styles fr all layer types: Nw QGIS lets yu cntrl hw new layers will be drawn when they d nt have an existing.qml style defined. Yu can als set the default transparency level fr new layers and whether symbls shuld have randm clurs assigned t them. Map Cmpser HTML Map Items: Yu can nw place html elements nt yur map. Aut snap lines: Having nicely aligned map items is critical t making nice printed maps. Aut snapping lines have been added t allw fr easy cmpser bject alignment by simply dragging an bject clse t anther. Manual Snap Lines: Smetimes yu need t align bjects a curtain distance n the cmpser. With the new manual snapping lines yu are able t add manual snap lines which allw fr better align bjects using a cmmn alignment. Simply drag frm the tp r side ruler t add new guide line. Map series generatin: The cmpser nw includes built in map series generatin using the atlas feature. Cverage layers can be pints, lines, plygns, and the current feature attribute data is available in labels fr n the fly value replacement. Multipage supprt: A single cmpser windw can nw cntain mre than ne page. Expressins in cmpser labels: The cmpser label item in 1.8 was quite limited and nly allwed a single tken $CURRENT_DATE t be used. In 2.0 full expressin supprt has been added t greater pwer and cntrl f the final labels. Autmatic verview supprt in map frame: Need t shw the current area f the main map frame in a smaller verview windw. Nw yu can. The map frame nw cntains the ability t shw the extents f ther and will update when mved. Using this with the atlas generatin feature nw cre in the cmpser allws fr sme slick map generatin. Overview frame style uses the same styling as a nrmal map plygn bject s yur creativity is never restricted. Layer blending: Layer blending makes it pssible t cmbine layers in new and exciting ways. While in lder versins, all yu culd d was t make the layer transparent, yu can nw chse between much mre advanced ptins such as multiply, darken nly, and many mre. Blending can be used in the nrmal map view as well as in print cmpser. HTML labels supprt full css styles sheets, html, and even javascript if yu are that way inclined. Multiclumn cmpser legend: The cmpser legend nw supprts multiple clumns. Splitting f a single layer with many classes int multiple clumns is ptinal. Single symbl layers are nw added by default as single line item. Three different styles may be assigned t layer/grup title: Grup, Subgrup r Hidden. Title styles allw arbitrary visual gruping f items. Fr example, a single symbl layer may be displayed as single line item r with layer title (like in 1.8), symbls frm multiple fllwing layers may be gruped int a single grup (hiding titles) etc. Feature cunts may be added t labels. Updates t map cmpser management: The fllwing imprvements have been made t map cmpser management: Cmpser name can nw be defined upn creatin, ptinally chsing t start frm ther cmpser names. Cmpsers can nw be duplicated. New frm Template and frm Specific (in Cmpser Manager) creates a cmpser frm a template lcated anywhere n the file system. Parent prject can nw be saved directly frm the cmpser wrk space. All cmpser management actins nw accessible directly frm the cmpser wrk space. Labeling New labeling system: The labeling system has been ttally verhauled - it nw includes many new features such as drp shadws, highway shields, many mre data bund ptins, and varius perfrmance enhancements. QGIS is slwly ding away with the ld labels system, althugh yu will still find that functinality available fr this release, yu shuld expect that it will disappear in a fllw up release. Expressin based label prperties: The full pwer f nrmal label and rule expressins can nw be used fr label prperties. Nearly every prperty can be defined with an expressin r field value giving yu mre cntrl ver the label result. Expressins can refer t a field (e.g. set the fnt size t the value f the field fnt ) r can include mre cmplex lgic. Older labeling engine deprecated: Use f the lder labeling engine available in QGIS <= 1.8 is nw discuraged (i.e. deprecated), but has nt been remved. This is t allw users t migrate existing prjects frm the ld t new labeling engine. The fllwing guidelines fr wrking with the lder engine in QGIS 2.0 apply: Deprecated labeling tab is remved frm vectr layer prperties dialg fr new prjects r lder pened prjects that dn t use that labeling engine. 12

Deprecated labeling tab can be enabled/disabled fr the current prject, via Pythn cnsle cmmands. Please nte: There is a very high likelihd the deprecated labelling engine will be cmpletely remved prir t the next stable release f QGIS. Please migrate lder prjects. Analysis tls Prcessing Cmmander: Fr quick access t geprcessing functinality, just launch the prcessing cmmander (Ctrl + Alt + M) and start typing the name f the tl yu are lking fr. Cmmander will shw yu the available ptins and launch them fr yu. N mre searching thrugh menus t find tls. They are nw right at yur fingertips. Heatmap Plugin Imprvements: The heatmap plugin has seen numerus imprvements and ptimisatins, resulting in much faster creatin f heatmaps. Additinally, yu nw have the chice f which kernel functin is used t create the heatmap. Prcessing Supprt: The SEXTANTE prject has been prted t and incrprated int QGIS as cre functinality. SEXTANTE has been renamed t Prcessing and intrduces a new menu in QGIS frm where yu can access a rich tlbx f spatial analysis tls. The prcessing tlbx has incredibly rich functinality - with a pythn prgramming API allwing yu t easily add new tls, and hks t prvide access t analysis capabilities f many ppular pen surce tls such as GRASS, OTB, SAGA etc. Prcessing Mdeller: One f the great features f the new prcessing framewrk is the ability t cmbine the tls graphically. Using the Prcessing Mdeller, yu can build up cmplex analysis frm a series f small single purpse mdules. Yu can save these mdels and then use them as building blcks in even mre cmplex mdels. Awesme pwer integrated right int QGIS and very easy t use! Plugins Revamped plugin manager: In QGIS 1.x managing plugins was smewhat cnfusing with tw interfaces - ne fr managing already installed plugins and ne fr fetching pythn plugins frm an nly plugin repsitry. In QGIS 2.0 a new, unified, plugin manager has been intrduced which prvides a ne stp shp fr dwnlading, enabling/disabling and generally managing yu plugins. Applicatin and Prject Optins: Define default start-up prject and prject templates. With QGIS 2.0 yu can specify what QGIS shuld d when it starts: New Prject (legacy behaviur, starts with a blank prject), Mst recent (when yu start QGIS it will lad the last prject yu wrked n), Specific (always lad a specific prject when QGIS starts). Yu can use the prject template directry t specify where yur template prjects shuld be stred. Any 13

System envirnment variables: Current system envirnment variables can nw be viewed and many cnfigured within the applicatin Optins dialg. Useful fr platfrms, such as Mac, where a GUI applicatin des nt necessarily inherit the user s shell envirnment. Als useful fr setting/viewing envirnment variables fr the external tl sets cntrlled by the prcessing tlbx, e.g. SAGA, GRASS; and, fr turning n debugging utput fr specific sectins f the surce cde. User-defined zm scales: A listing f zm scales can nw be cnfigured fr the applicatin and ptinally verridden per prject. The list will shw up in the Scale ppup cmb bx in the main windw status bar, allwing fr quick access t knwn scales fr efficiently viewing and wrking with the current data surces. Defined scales can be exprted t an XML file that can be imprted int ther prjects r anther QGIS applicatin. Layer Legend Legend visual feedback and ptins Ttal cunt fr features in layer, as well as per symbl. Vectr layers in edit mde nw have a red pencil t indicate uncmmitted (unsaved) edits. Active layer is nw underlined, t indicate it in multi-layer selectins r when there is n selectin. Clicking in nn-list-item whitespace nw clears the selectin. Right-clicks are nw treated as left-clicks prir t shwing the cntextual menu, allwing fr ne click instead f tw. Grups and layers can ptinally be in a bld fnt style. Raster layer generated preview icns can nw be turned ff, fr prjects where such rendering may be slw. Duplicate existing map layer: Duplicate selected vectr and raster layers in the map layer legend. Similar t imprting the same data surce again, as a separate layer, then cpy/pasting style and symblgy attributes. Multi-layer tggle editing cmmands: User can nw select multiple layers in legend and, if any f thse are vectr layers in edit mde, chse t save, rllback, r cancel current uncmmitted edits. User can als chse t apply thse actins acrss all layers, regardless f selectin. Brwser Imprvements t in-app brwser panel: Directries can be filtered by wildcard r regex expressins. 14

New OWS grup (cllatin f available map server cnnectins). Open a secnd brwser (View -> Panels -> Brwser (2)) fr drag-n-drp interactins between brwser panels.
