2 NOTES TO THE CONDCTOR This transcrition o Asturias is as true to the original score as easible and has been ornamented with the addition o ercussion instruments Written originally or iano, this comosition has a rhythmically ersistent edal oint, which Albéniz emloyed as a structural deice, een endowing it on occasion with dramatic signiicance This work is in the original key o G minor The work is a toccata style with more lyrical, though increasingly ressing, ariation It is noted or the delicate, intricate melody o its middle section and abrut dynamic changes It exemliies Albéniz iano works, which are brilliantly colored, illed with suggestie harmonies and comlex textures, and richly eocatie Although great eort was made to maintain the integrity o the original, a transcrition will always require adustments to accommodate a seciic musical setting The suggested temo at the beginning is Allegro q = 04 ; howeer, deending on the technical ability o the ensemble, it may be taken aster As it is the case with all transcritions and adatations, some essential dierences exist between the original iano score and this concert band arrangement Besides the addition o ercussion arts, the temi, dynamics, articulations and exressions markings hae been careully notated and should be ollowed closely Adatations are usually challenging, esecially when the melody is actually a rhythmic hrase ersistently reeated Consequently, or ariety and color, the melody is intermittently shared with other wind instruments throughout or layability, at times, the melody has been diided between two arts or written within one art as diisi Additionally, the entire line, including the cue notes, is ultimately written in such arts or those layers who would like an added challenge urthermore, the entire melody aears in the Mallet ercussion II art, which seres as rhythmical suort As mentioned earlier, or an eectie erormance, it is o the utmost imortance that the dynamics and articulations be ollowed closely as they are integral arts o this work The intent is to make it sound as i only one layer is laying it The reercussie edal oint is to be layed lightly rom beginning to end, the many changes in dynamics make this iece energetic and exciting The slow central section at rehearsal number 6 is more sohisticated The oening hrases eoke the cante ondo, the imroised solo song o that ersecuted Indian-ewish-Gysy cultural amalgam that roduced what we today call lamenco Note that the mordents in this section hae been written out to aoid inconsistencies Measures 79 through eentually gie way to a more rhythmic, dancelike section with more actie accomaniment The section at measure seems somewhat comical and should be layed ery light At measure, the main thematic material is restated, but this time with some ariations Measure 85 introduces a series o ure diatonic choral-style harmonies The ending seems to be non-resolute leading to the inal tonic octaes at the end Oerall, this transcrition catures the character o the original work and it is incredibly itting or concert band contest literature reiew Only Olé!
